Keanu Reeves was able to make Shadow all his own without copying any of the other voice actors while staying true to who Shadow is; a cool, complex character who’s dealing with years of trauma and grief. Reeves made Shadow sound bad ass, funny and heartfelt in Sonic 3 and I couldn’t agree more with the praise he gets for his voice acting

I mean, if you think about it, Keanu Reeves IS already within character from John Wick to Shadow, mainly due to how his 2 characters are relatable to his own tragic backstory in life during the infamous Matrix curse. Not only is this guy the most humbled celeb in existence, but he too feels the pain his own 2 characters are feeling and shares with them that pain by expressing it. Keanu Reeves lost his girlfriend and unborn child, John Wick lost his wife and gifted puppy, and Shadow lost his own comforting “sister” to whom he considers his best friend. There’s that deep connection between Keanu Reeves and his two characters.

Me personally.. 1. David - the best voice for shadow imo, especially when Shadow was still affected from his past. 2. Jason - his take on Shadow voice was nice, i feel like it fit during when Shadow is slowly accepting his past. 3. Ian - his voice for Shadow fit after he's no longer bound by the trama of his past and looking forward to protecting his new home.

That is exactly what I was thinking to write about. To me, because of Sonic X, Jason Griffith will always be my Shadow just as he is my Sonic. Humphrey is the one who introduced us to the character while Thornton’s take on it has improved since Forces. Hanlin’s, on the other hand, was spot-on in his debut because Shadow’s voice is a brooding tone but one that shouldn’t be exaggerated since it would feel very off. Lastly, Keanu’s voice for Shadow was very unexpected but after hearing it in the trailer, he actually nailed it.

Ian Hanlin for sure! This is the first time Shadow actually sounds eloquent and intelligent. The others make him sound edgy but imo there is no depth to it (Keanu excluded because we haven't heard much of him yet). But I must say I did like the way Kirk voiced Shadow in the recent Sonic X Shadow Dark Generations episode. There was certain warmth to it that I really liked.

1. Ian Hanlin. Without a doubt, my favorite Shadow portrayal. He's got both the gruffness and the bass that Shadow needs, and he's got the most life in his voice out of all of them. 2. Jason Griffith. His portrayal in Sonic X was a little weak, but he got a good grasp on the voice in Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06. There's a reason his take is so iconic. 3. David Humphries. He was at his strongest in Sonic Heroes. Honestly, I think he was underserved by the sound mixing in SA2, but he does a very good job in the most important scenes. 4. Kirk Thornton. I don't think he's bad per se, but he hasn't had the best opportunities to show his skill. Even in the Sonic X Shadow Generations animation, though, I think he lacks some important grit to his voice to make him as versatile as the others. I think it would be unfair to rank Keanu Reaves since he's only been in one movie trailer so far, but I anticipate I will really like him.

It’s hard to say. Jason Griffith I’ve been the most familiar with and is probably my favorite. David Humphrey is great, but it’s a shame he had a short run when Sonic’s transition to 3D was still rough. Kirk Thornton I didn’t like for a while but he really grew into the role and the recent shorts showed it. Ian Hanlin I think is secretly the best. He has the best range. And I can’t wait to see how Keanu voices Shadow. Very excited for the movie.

I just adore David’s ability to make Shadow sound intimidating when he feels he needs to be, but softer and more emotional when he feels unsure or vulnerable or really anything other than angry. Jason and Kirk to me just sound too unnatural and forced. Ian was perfect for Shadow in Sonic Prime, since he was written as a much more confident, self-assured character, and really nailed it with Shadow’s growls and lower register too. I’m excited to hear Keanu’s Shadow performance, I think he has the potential to be a good mix of David’s emotional voice and Ian’s aggressive, confident voice.

David’s best performance during his run was Sonic Heroes and Jason’s best performance during his run was Sonic and the Black Knight, and outside of that he was borderline perfect in S&TR. I think the voice casting in Prime for both Shadow AND Sonic was some of my favorite but I also really love their movie voices. When I first watched the Sonic Movie hearing Keanu as Shadow as kinda odd? But it grew on me a lot especially after my 2nd watch and I really would love to hear more of Keanu as Shadow! Also seeing Kirk’s growth as Shadow was really nice since his first rendition of Shadow’s voice wasn’t my favorite but watching how his voice evolved was so cool.

My ranking: 5. Keanu Reeves: it just does not sit well with me yet 4. David Humphrey: he has the smoothness and the mysterious vibe to it, but I wish the voice was deeper. The higher voice makes him sound a little whiny at times. 3. Kirk Thornton: Definitely the most improved player. While it’s not perfect, as of Sonic X Shadow Generations, and possibly even Forces, his voice finally has Shadow’s smoothness. I also adore the personality in his voice, and the deepness is just right. 2. Jason Griffith: I’ll concede: the former GOAT has been dethroned. I may have bias because his voice is so damn hard to match, but when he voices Shadow, the smoothness is perfect. He does a great job getting the edginess, yet calmness of his voice. My one gripe is that his edginess is a little over the top, and removes Shadow’s personality. I’ve noticed that when doing my Shadow voice with a Jason Griffith inflection. 1. Ian Hanlin: This guy took the personality of Kirk, the mysterious vibe of David, and the smoothness of Jason, and gave us the best Shadow voice, as well as the first Shadow voice that I can remember which doesn’t feel like an outlier from the voices of the other Sonic characters.

Ian in this era of Modern Shadow (which allegedly Prime is supposed to be Modern canon) fits so well! It accumulates his iconic traits but is self-assured and more secure in himself, a more or less "healed" and reformed Shadow, which gives more variety in his range of emotion. Still grumpy and ticked but can easily flow into concerned and sarcastic.

The smoothness, and the seriousness all mesh as one, and the play-off of Sonic's personality all working together is what made Shadow, Shadow. *2nd Place Ian Hanlin* After years of people changing Shadow and not knowing who he is supposed to be and what is supposed he to act like Ian comes close to bringing Shadow back to his former glory. But the voice is too griddy at times and the hip Gen Z lines don't help as it tries to force coolness on to his character. 3rd Place Jason Griffith* Hum, well this guy sounds too much like Sonic......... You can hear it in his voice to offend and when he first showed up in Sonic X, he sounded like the Gentleman thief. While he's not bad, he just comes off as a little goofy. *4th Place Kirk Thornton but really last place* MAN!!!! This guy is terrible for Shadow's voice. I can't sugarcoat........Whenever you hear his voice it sounds like an evil cartoon villain out for REVENGE! Every line sounds worse and worse and the voice makes the personality far, far off from who and what Shadow is supposed to be. He's too dark, too cartoonist mad scientist, too gravelly, and too much of trying to be bad (in a way that makes you look cool....) to be taken seriously as Shadows's actual voice. Everybody who placed him before still tries to capture the smooth tone of Shadow's voice but NOT THIS GUY! *Keanu Reaves is Undecided* There have not been enough lines to make a full judgment on him yet.......

1. David 2. Keanu 3. Ian 4. Jason 5. Kirk David is the goat. He captured the cool, mysterious, and intellectual aspects of Shadow. Keanu brought the acting to Shadow and made it feel very enticing to hear every line he says. Ian was pretty good, but sounded a bit generic. Jason was good as well but sounded too much like sonic and his Shadow voice sounded a bit gimmicky. Kirk was terrible but has gotten better over time.

I always knew Kirk Thornton could be a great shadow voice if he was given different direction. knowing he voices also Saïx in kingdom hearts, who’s voice and personality is already very shadow-like, I thought he could be perfect but it just wasn’t quite there in the past. I think his performance in Shadow Gens was a gigantic improvement

To me, Keanu Reeves fits the best. Shadows an older, scarred, and serious character. Reeves gives him that grim, bitter, and serious voice without having to hardly try.

I Absolutely Love Jason Griffith as My All Time Favorite English Dub Voice Actor of Shadow the Hedgehog of the *Sonic* Games franchise throughout the years. I grew up with him, and he's still No.#1 as Shadow. I suppose David Humphrey and Kirk Thornton both Super Epic as Shadow the Hedgehog in the *Sonic Boom* franchise, and Ian Hanlin was Super Incredible and Remarkable as Shadow in *Sonic Prime.* Now THIS year in 2024, in only two months away from December, can't wait to see and hear Kaenu Reeves as the Ultimate Edge Lord Hedgehog in the Brand Newest *Sonic the Hedgehog 3* Live-Action Movie! 😄😁👍👍
