I believe it wasn't actually a secret. Minato wanted the village to think of Naruto as a hero when he died, so Hiruzen told everyone "Hey, this kid saved us from Nine tails by holding it inside his stomach" which basically backfired. Minato had that hokage mind set (Tobirama and Tsunade seem immune) of "My villagers can't do no wrong", so thought his son would live as a hero.

Well in their defense especially in hidden leaf the nine tails did destroy half the village and most likely kill thousands of people so them hating Naruto made sense to extent for both Naruto and gaara the choice of making them the holders of their respective beasts was of higher authority aka the leaders so must of if not the all villagers must likely had no choice in the matter

I assumed that their mentality was the child IS the tailed beast. As soon as they became a Jinchuriki they no longer were the person they had previously been, or could have been. Especially because they had the beast inside them since infancy. The people of the village would attribute any negative action that child did to the fact they were a jinchurkiki. Us as the audience know that there is a separation between the beast and the child. Some characters came to this realization that the host of the tailed beast was a human being and NOT the tailed beast wearing them like a meat suit. Others had to be convinced that the person housing the tailed beast was still human. It sucks that they believed this, but they didn’t have the knowledge we do.

I don't even see why Naruto is put up for the debate of saddest backstory. He probably has the lightest of the sad backstories. He was lonley, that was it. He never knew his parents so he couldn't exactly "miss" them. Gaara's mom died while birthing him, his dad didn't want him, and his uncle tried to kill him. Kakashi's dad was shamed to suicide, his only 2 friends died to situations that were heavily tied to him, then his master died in a nine tailed beast attack. Not to mention he was known for murdering his best friend, which couldn't have exactly been a good feeling for him. And THAT shit followed him all the way into adulthood, Naruto got over his sadness at like age 10, Gaara a little after that, and Sasuke got over his shit somewhere in his teenage years.

I agree with you that Gaara had a really rough childhood but let's not forget that Naruto grew up without even knowing who his parents are and he was asking questions to the 3rd hokage but he only gave him money at such a really young age, he was living by HIMSELF, that's realy heartbreaking and sad af, yes I know that they have tried to assassinate Gaara but he knew who his parents are and he have siblings even tho they were afraid of him, and even after they have grown up Gaara's siblings have become really close to him and Naruto remained lonely and only Shika and Iruka were dropping rarely, so I think that Naruto and Gaara had an even bad childhood and by far the worst childhood in all narutoverse
