It's just a show, but y'all should know that brain dead people don't blink their eyes. Blinking his eyes would have meant he was in a vegetative state. Most non-medical people don't believe there is a difference between brain death and a vegetative state, however there is. In a vegetative state, the brain stem is still alive and there may still be hope. For brain death to be declared, all brain stem reflexes must be absent and there are guidelines about how long they are absent. Eye blinking is one such reflex, as is coughing and gagging.

Good to know since my two granddaddies are old and I’ve already lost my grandmamas. But most likely needed to know this for my mom.. her lung problems are showing up much earlier than her mom’s, my grandmother. She is only a little over 60 and shouldn’t be having to sleep with an airtube blowing air into her nose so she can breath properly in her sleep. I need to know things like this so I know if things go completely wrong. Granted I shouldn’t be casting stones since both our problems could cause that. She has trouble breathing and has a slight bit of diabetic. I have seizures and with every year they get worse and less under control. So, I guess im more likely to end up like that than her. Gotta tell my husband this info. Thanks 👍🏼

This reminds me of when my sister was taking care of both our parents. Now she used to be a healthcare consultant and is into advanced methods she’d find online as well as natural remedies and therapies. She wanted to do anything and everything to prolong Mother and Dad’s lives even longer and would badger the doctors with what she said she had found- even after they told her there was nothing more that could be done for them. Mother passed away in 2014 and Dad in 2018. To this day she’s still beating herself over the head for believing she failed in her work!

This episode hurts so very much. My father passed 3 months ago in a not so dissimilar way, although he went due to a brain infection. He remained in a vegetative state, and was progressing into brain death after the infection slowly turned away from anti-biotics. Unfortunately, there was nothing more doctor's could do other than give him anti-swelling medication to reduce his pain, and set him on the strongest pain killers they had. The entire time he was out, he had those same reflexive reactions, and it hurts so very much knowing that other people have to go through these awful times as well. Rest In Peace, Dad. I'll always love you.

God it reminds me of when my dad was in the hospital. I nearly lost my father to COVID in 2021 and when he was at his worst, a doctor straight up told me and my family we should give up on him and that "he shouldn't have made it through the night." Jokes on that doctor, he made it through that night and came out of the hospital alive and is doing alright. 😎

Dr abrams is being logical here because this episode had a mass casualty scenario when a apartment building fire killed many and left a LOT of people needing to be intubated and oxygenated. His dad was gone. The others need the ventilator

We went through it with of my dad's brother he'd had a heart attack and was unresponsive and remained that way. When he collapsed he hit his head and that also left him with a head injury but the heart attack is what caused it. We waited for their younger brother and his wife to come in from Texas to make a decision and the doc gave them I think 72 hours but told us he was brain dead. I was almost 2 months pregnant at that time. They decided to pull the plug on him and he did breath on his own for about 10 hours and I did get to tell him bye but I got tired so my mom took me home. And between 10 -12 that night he past away in 2002. Still miss him

I thought you can’t operate on your own family? Other than my question, this sure is a sad episode. Coming from someone who also has an unbearable father at times.

Judging by what he said to the blond nurse there might not have been any other doctors available and nurses cand call time. I noticed this show uses the understaffed trope alot to add stress to it.

I thought CPR kept oxygen going to the brain? I heard a real life case of a toddler who was revived after about 3 hours, and according to google some codes where the initial rhyrhm was V-fib, like this guys was, have lasted for 50+ minutes. And I read a story from a guy on Quora who survived after that long. They got to him the second the monitor went off and did CPR right away for only 5 minutes. Surely that would have prevented brain death? Even if it was badly done, brain death is unlikely to happen within 5 minutes anyway.

Tell me you didnt watch the clip without telling me you didnt watch the clip 🤣 Brain-dead is a medical term. If one is brain-dead, there is little to no chance of coming back from that ….which is precisely what happened.

At three minutes and 45 seconds, when your time is up it is up you’re not gonna die until God says you do and when he says it’s your time it’s your time I’m a registered nurse for 35 years. I’ve seen it 300 times everyone has their time.

Man I would rather be dead and with Jesus than on a stupid machine for even a year. If I can't go hiking and be in the mountains and do things then what life is that. I would tell them straight up if it looks like I ain't there just pull the plug and let me die in peace without pain.

In comas potentially, in this case with brain death, even though it's not portrayed correctly in the show, means the person is dead, they can not hear nor do they have any form of responses. Though you are correct if it were to be vegetative state/coma, some have reported they can hear people.
