My father, on the way home in Ww2, saw the Me 262 and wonder, how could this thing fly. "How could this machine fly without propeller", Mein Vater hat mir erzählt, dass er auf dem Heimweg eine Me 262 irgendwo stehen gesehn hatte, und er sich wunderte, "wie fliegt den das Ding ohne Propeller". Das waren in etwa seine Worte.

I think this is a replica. First flight 2002. Five aircraft built were using a real 262 as a template. These aircraft are so close to the originals that some consider them to be licensed copies. There is one original 262 with Jumo 004 engines that is scheduled to make its return to the air this year.

I had a unique opportunity about 12 years ago to sit in a REAL ME262. My Dad worked as a volunteer at the US Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Once a year they had an employee appreciation dinner & also opened up several planes that you can climb into. I noticed they actually had the ME262 canopy open so I climbed in, I was amazed at how few instruments were in it. That same night I sat in a P-38J Lighting, an SR71, a P-47 & the B-29 "Bocks Car" that dropped the A-bomb on Nagasaki. Quite the evening! (They don't do this anymore by the way).

The Junkers Jumo 004 engines had a notoriously poor maintenance record due to metallurgical limitations, among other things. The engines in this particular aircraft are a non-afterburning variant of the J85...I believe that would be the GE CJ610 which is typically used in Learjets. They are smaller than the 004, I think, and are centered within the cowling.

The swastika is forbidden by the german law since "deutsches reich" surrenders at May 8, 1945 but the german engineers like messerschmitt left a wonderful plane for us, and yes it is right, one replica of the ME-262 belongs to Airbus Defense at Manching a small town near Munich but the swastika will never be shown on any of the planes

Keep in mind this is not an original Me-262. Its a replica. A VERY well made Me-262 Project (now defunct) and is CJ610 powered. The Collings Foundation had a lot of issues with the 262 from the day it was delivered.
@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 7 жыл бұрын
+Evil Merlin Could be considered as a second-generation Me-262 and it has its own unique Me-262 aircraft type assignment to distinguish it from the originals. The biggest problem was that they had to re-engineer the main landing gear attachments to correct a design flaw from WW2, which caused two gear collapses. The project planned to only build a few examples to ensure buyers that the planes would retain investment value. Classic Fighter Industries (which managed the project) is still in business restoring other aircraft.
@andgate2000
@andgate2000 7 жыл бұрын
Evil Merlin actually it’s not a replica.....it’s a brand new 262 ....”white one” and “whiskey tango” were built off the original plans. With ge engines and modern avionics to pass regs. Both are limited to original flying parameters.
@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 7 жыл бұрын
+andgate2000 The original engineering plans and documents were missing or otherwise incomplete. (Missing for many Luftwaffe types, although both the USAF Museum and the Smithsonian have some in their archives.) So the whole point of the project was to offer to restore the original two-seater that is owned by the US Navy and was deteriorating badly. This presented an opportunity to copy the parts while they were available during the restoration and construct five new replica examples (one static, four airworthy with modern turbines.) Changes were made to install modern turbines, two examples can be converted between dual-control or single-seat fighter configuration, modern brakes used and a few other safety changes. The new examples have a new type designation Me-262A-1c, Me-262B-1c or Me-262A/B-1c to distinguish them from wartime examples.

In April 1943, the prototype of the jet fighter Messerschmitt Me 262 was successfully tested. After a test flight on May 22, 1943, Galland described the jet fighter's power as "when an angel pushes". Galland, like many other field-proven officers, was convinced that this aircraft was in dire need of defense against the increasingly massive attacks of the United States Air Force's 8th Air Force with its "Flying Fortresses." Hitler, however, wanted to use the Me 262 as a lightning bomber against the expected Allied invasion in the west. With a threat of resignation Galland sat through the "command Nowotny" for testing the jet fighter as a fighter in the front line. On April 11, 1944, he was appointed lieutenant general for his services as commander of the fighter pilots. The pressure on Galland became increasingly strong. So he was accused of not sufficiently engaging Goering against unjustified court-martial proceedings against young comrades, although he was aware of this. At the end of January 1945, after "insurmountable differences" between Galland and Hermann Goering, he was replaced as general of the fighter pilots. Galland was ordered by Hitler to order the "Jagdverband 44", which was to be equipped with Me 262. Many of the most successful German fighter pilots reported shortly before the foreseeable defeat to this elite unit. Galland recognized 104 enemy kills. , "Jagdverband 44" In November 1944, Galland, like many other supreme ranks of the Luftwaffe, was summoned to Berlin for a meeting organized by Goering in the Luftkriegsakademie Gatow. The aim was to find ways to restore the air force in the shortest possible time. However, this meeting, known as "Areopag", of 40 senior officers of the Hunter, Bomber, and Reconnaissance Battlegroup units was without effective results. A group around Galland, Steinhoff, Bär and Lützow (who acted as the head) tried to improve the position of the fighter pilots against the "Bomber people". The air force leadership, especially the hunting weapon was responsible for the fact that the Allied bombers could achieve such great destruction of industrial plants and cities. The bomber group consisted mainly of fur, Herrmann and Ulrich Diesing. Fur even offered Göring that all available bomber pilots can be retrained on jet fighter bombers, as the fighter pilots were too exhausted for it. Goering made Galland personally responsible for many omissions and dismissed him on January 23, 1945 as a general of fighter pilots. As a successor, the Intimfeind Gallands, Gordon Gollob was appointed. Lützow was sent as a hunting guide northern Italy almost into "exile". Other experienced fighter pilots, also referred to as experts in the internal language, fell into disfavor with the air force leadership. So received Bär, since mid-1944 squadron commander of the Jagdgeschwader 3 (JG 3), on February 13, the sentencing to a training session, as commander of the III. Group of Supplementary Hunting Squadron 2 (III./EJG 2). Even Steinhoff, who had taken over after the death of Novotny on 7 November 1944 III./JG 7, was replaced in mid-December 1944 by this post because of alleged inactivity and received no new command. list Galland himself was supposed to take charge of the fourth season of the Jagdgeschwader 54 in January 1945, according to the ideas of Gollob in January 1945, as a punishment transfer, which flew support for the trapped German troops in the Kurland-Kessel. However, this did not happen because Albert Speer's intervention was personally canceled by Hitler. Galland saw his only moral rehabilitation chance in taking back a task force, in a bandage that flew the Me 262. This was the aircraft he had flown in 1943 as a prototype and was able to recognize his superiority over conventional fighter aircraft. Goering submitted to him Hitler's decision that he had to set up a unit in squadron strength, with which he should demonstrate the superiority of the new technology. He was to organize the procurement of the aircraft himself. The unit should act completely independently, there would be no assumption under a hunting division, air corps or air fleet. Contacts with other hunting units should not be made. He could also make the designation himself, as long as the name Galland does not appear in it. Galland opted for "Jagdverband 44." The reasons speculated that the year of his dismissal was a factor, and that 44 was exactly half the designation of his first unit of the J 88 in which he served in the Spanish Civil War. As a berth for the new unit should serve Brandenburg-Briest, where already the III./JG 7 was stationed. His plan was to set up a "self-serving" unit of nominal 16 jets, divided into two small four-engine squadrons and a group of eight jets. Koller, as a general of the aviators supported Galland in the lineup with staff of the 16th Squadron of the Jagdgeschwaders 54, which was currently in the renamed the 7./JG 7. Johannes Steinhoff was recruited as an important player in the construction. The backbone of the unit was formed by a large number of experienced and highly decorated fighter pilots, some of whom Galland brought to JV 44 from school units. At least three Siebel Si 204s were purchased from the Air Force Flight Instructor School for navigational training and flight training with a twin-engined aircraft. Between 4 and 18 March 1945, the first training flights were completed with these machines, the first Me 262 arrived at the JV 44 on 14 March. On March 18, Lieutenant General Kammhuber ordered the earliest possible operational readiness with a strength of 20 aircraft. The training program was continued until well into March, the aircraft were mostly armed to perform at the same time also patrol flights. Because of the many highly decorated pilots, such as Gerhard Barkhorn, Walter Krupinski, Günther Lützow and Hans-Ekkehard Bob, was jokingly claimed within the Air Force, that in this Jagdveband "the Knight's Cross belongs to the service suit". The Jagdverband 44, despite hostile air superiority, scored a few air victories in the loss of three Me 262 against the mostly Western Allied air forces during its operational time of eleven weeks in aerial combat. Most Me 262 units were destroyed by Allied attacks on the ground. The Jagdverband 44 never had more than 12 ready Me 262 and thus reached a maximum of the strength of a Jagdstaffel. The last use with the participation of Lieutenant General Galland took place on 26 April 1945 with six jet fighters against an Allied fast combat unit of the type Marauder. After an injury Adolf Galland, the Jagdverband 44 was led by Lieutenant Colonel Oskar-Heinrich Bär. On May 3, 1945, the last aircraft of the Jagdverband 44 were blown up at Salzburg Airport and the members of the Jagdverband 44 were taken prisoners of war. Unfortunately, there is no precise information about the number of kills by the "Jagdverband 44". It is alleged that Galland was interrogated after the war by the Allies for a operation of the "Jagdverband 44" against an Allied Bonber Task Force. The allies didn`t believe that Galllands "Jagdverband 44 "consisted only of 12 Me 262 at the time of the attack. On his question how many enemy aircraft were shot down by them, he never got an answer ....

What is more important in your mind? The machinery or the history? Yes this aircraft is impressive especially when you consider the technological advances that made it possible in its time. However the history is what is really important from a sociological perspective. The distorting of history for the sake of political correctness is an inexcusable offense against humanity, society and the millions of men, women and children directly involved in that world war. Never forget, lest we make the same mistakes all over again. The biggest crime against humanity is failing to learn from those hard fought lessons.

If You built a new Volkswagen, years after it stopped being produced, what would You call that? I know about an Englishman that had a new Morris 1000 built from official spares from the factory, so that his father could have a new car when the old one wasn't drive-able any more. And as it the plane definitely wasn't built form old spares, it is a little hard to make it an original?

@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 4 жыл бұрын
+pylon500 This is one of the new builds, originally patterned from an original in Herb Tishler's Texas workshop, but the project was moved and finished at CFI in Washington state. This is the first example to be completed, and there were problems. The new builds copied a design flaw in the main landing gear and this new example had a gear collapse on the first test flight. The landing gear strut punched upward and through the wing. The problem began when Messerschmitt switched the landing gear from tail-dragger on the Me-262 prototype to a tricycle configuration and created weak point at the strut attachment points on the main spar. CFI repaired the damage and engineered a correction with additional boxing around the strut attachment points. The video above shows a test flight after work at Sanders Aeronautics from what I think was another gear collapse, but I would have do some digging to find an account of that incident. I cannot identify the aircraft in the background, but no Me-210s survive and only two Me-410s survive, both in museums. An authentic restored Me-262 with overhauled (slightly upgraded) original turbines was conducting taxi trails before test flying in Washington state, but that museum has just had their funding cut so the future for that particular Me-262 and the rest of collection is uncertain at this time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIHEq6h8hr94adE

This is a good question...the folks at Sanders aeronautics did not paint the aircraft, so I don't know why this paint scheme was selected. Regardless of connotations (and you are correct on the background of the swatskita as I understand it), I'm not sure why the symbol was omitted. I am unsure of whether all 262s included a swatstika on their livery, but it would make sense, being a Nazi aircraft...

The P-51 is one of the most incredible pieces of machinery ever built. The 262 was certainly innovative but plagued with problems in operation. It was also ineffective in dogfights and not designed to be used as such. The point of a dogfight is to go *slower* than your opponent so you can get behind them to kill. The 262 did not have that capability vs. P-51--had flameout risk and slow throttle response. It was a bomber killer. Also, the P-51 segment stays but you can leave if you'd like.

I Don't tink the US and UK fighters of that time would have a very hard time. They were more manuvereble. But as it was, the Me-262 could have been the first real Interceptor of that Era. Imagine the Me-262 coming down on those heavy bomber with four 30mm cannon blazing. The Bomber would disintegrate on the first volley. After depleted ammo, The Me-262 could then return to base relative safe, no one could catch up.

@@samstewart4807 I have not seen any pilot impressions for this replica. Post-war test notes can be found for captured examples. Remember that the modern engines are a significant performance improvement over the original Jumo turbines, so much so that pilots have to essentially throttle down the GE engines to the same power curve as the original engines to avoid too much stress on the aircraft. I am sure that the replica flies differently, take off and braking performance for example. I think when the Flying Heritage museum is able to test fly their original Me-262, the test pilots will have more comments.
