I saw this show the final weekend on Broadway-Jenn was back. I had no idea until she was walking on stage. I burst into tears right then knowing I was going to get to hear her sing this song. Even better-Captain Bass was in the audience that night.

I was introduced to this show via this song playing on a Best of Broadway playlist while I was driving around one day. I was listening to it as a #girldad and being so proud of this little girl getting her life's dream. I had no idea how the song would end. No idea the song was ultimately about 9/11. When that part hit, I was FLOORED. I cried so hard I had to pull off the road for a bit. It's an amazing musical that you can hear from start to finish on Spotify, Apple, etc. I can't say enough good things about it.

1:47 - 3:01 Lyrics: American Airlines had the prettiest planes So I applied as a flight engineer But the World War II pilots, they all complained They said, "girls shouldn't be in the cockpit" "Hey lady, hey baby, hey! Why don't you grab us a drink?" And the flight attendants weren't my friends back then And they said, "Are you better than us, do you think?" But I kept getting hired And the World War II crew, they retired And the girls all thought much higher of me 1986, the first female American captain in history Suddenly I'm in the cockpit Suddenly I've got my wings Suddenly all of those pilots protestin' me Well, they can get their own drinks Suddenly there's no one saying "stay grounded" Looking down passing them by Suddenly there's nothing in between me and the sky

As a fellow singer I know that this a challenging song to take on. The emotional tones of the song are difficult to capture. It's also written for a Mezzo-Soprano and you likely had to adjust the key to fit your voice, which is another challenge. You should feel good that you were able to successfully perform the song and don't let it deter you from performing it again.

Tbf, if that's what u care about... ur show8ng u don't care for this person's story. No matter their sacrifice for the USA or not. If ur hated by a group of people and mocked by them ur entire life and career . Ur not gonna be super interested in saluting them. The ww2 vets did a great thing. Doesn't make them good people or worth a salute. If u disagree ur not a big fan of America.
@LilyPenguin1232 жыл бұрын
No hate on you ofc. Ur seeing what u seem. I'm hoping to give u an extra light on that to understand stuff you might not.
@samanthaoblander91742 жыл бұрын
I think it's because Jen is acknowledging the fact that the WWII pilots tried holding Beverly back and made working as a woman in a (at the time) man's industry difficult and her not saluting them is her way of holding them accountable for their actions. The lyric literally goes "But I kept getting hired, and the WWII crew, they retired and the girls all thought much higher of me." She's addressing the fact that when she started out she was looked down on for doing a man's job and that it was mainly those pilots that were doing it.
@sethzarandona2325 Жыл бұрын
I totally see what you mean, but earlier in the song she mentions that they treated her extremely poorly. I wouldn’t have saluted them either if they treated me that way. It like what Samatha said, by not saluting them, she’s holding them accountable for their crappy behavior.
@jaws3922 жыл бұрын
So was the thing that was stuck in between her and the sky at the end of the song, Al-Qaeda? Why doesn’t she sing a song about how much she hates Al-Qaeda?
@samanthaoblander91742 жыл бұрын
Because that's not what the show is about. The show isn't about hate. It's about celebrating the goodness and kindness that people demonstrated after such a horrible event.
