Okina Matara (the one who knocks from behind) is the Ex-boss of the game Hidden Star in Four Seasons, the 16th installment of the Touhou Project. The Touhou Project is a series of danmaku games where the upper power limit was reached quite a while ago and each subsequent character is, on paper, a little less impressive. Even when ZUN, the creator, says otherwise. Especially when ZUN, the creator, says otherwise. Trust me, I’m an engineer.
So, last time I said I was going to deal with my new lifestyle. I lied. This time I’m making no promises other than unless something happens I’ll be here for Touhou 17. Unless it’s a Phantasmagoria game. I don’t like those.
Back to topic:
After the bloody Final Fantasy-esque fashion massacre that was LoLK, ZUN decided to tone down the “HOLY S***” coefficient and stop chucking moons in our general direction. HSiFS is CONSIDERABLY easier than LoLK. If it wasn’t for an odd difficulty spike in Stage 4, I would rank this among the easiest Touhou games. By the way, odd as in very steep. Difficulty spikes in Stage 4 are actually a Touhou tradition.
That said, the Extra Stage has more in common with the first three stages than the last three in terms of difficulty, proportionally speaking. This is one of the easiest Ex-stages in the franchise. Actually, I would say only MoF has an easier stage. The stage has in interesting gimmick in its second shot option. You are forced to use a stage specific option that shoots bullets behind you, meaning the stage can and will force you to the top of the screen, instead of the traditional bottom, to deal with threats.
Enter Okina Matara, the Extra Boss (and Final Boss) of HSiFS. Okina is a secret goddess (whatever that means).
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR A PARTICULAR KEY POINT IN ONE OF THE TOUHOU MANGA
Ok, to be fair we do get an explanation to what a “secret god” is. I think. From my understanding it is a goddess that hides her true nature and is shrouded in mystery. You know how Kanako is a… Wind? Mountain? Sky? Goddess, Suwako’s an Earth Goddess, Hecatia’s a Hell Goddess, etc? We don’t know over what realm Okina precedes and she claims to precede over many. Or maybe boast. She does seem to like adorations. Also, she’s based on the god Matara-jin, with supports this. I won’t enter on detail about it. Feel free to search for information yourself.
More interestingly, Okina is one of the Sages of Gensokyo, alongside Yukari and Kasen. These Sages are responsible for the existence of Gensokyo, having a hand in its creation, protection, and general social order. Her ability is the power to “create doors in the back of anything”. The most mundane use of this ability is to literally create doors in the back of something, connected to an extradimensional space and use them as a mean of transportation a la Yukari’s gap. The ability does have other more esoteric uses that stretch the imagination. I personally like to think she would be an amazing hacker if she ever wants to work on cybersecurity.
Okina is meant to be an amalgamation of many characters. Her ability, leitmotif (supposedly), and position in the Gensokyo hierarchy are eerily similar to Yukari’s, she looks a lot like Junko, some people say her color scheme is too close to Koishi’s, so on, so forth. Honestly, I can see it except for the leitmotif one… actually, never mind. I now remember she’s ALSO the Final Boss and her final boss theme is eerily similar to Necrofantasia in some of its chords. And her Ex-boss theme shares chords with Kasen’s. Fitting.
Crazy thought: Okina is a “secret” god. She claims to be a god of many things. What if one of those things is… the Hakurei Shrine? We don’t know who’s the god of the Shrine, Reimu doesn’t know who’s the god of her Shrine, and Okina helped create Gensokyo, with the Hakurei Shrine Maiden in charge of protecting it. Maybe Okina lend her priests to take upon themselves the job of protecting Gensokyo. This theory kind of get invalidated when in the Ex-Stage Okina mentions not being able to make Reimu her servant due to being the Hakurei Shrine Maiden. Then again, youkai are not known for being terribly reliable narrators. Hilariously, Reimu lampshades how youkai make a big deal out of everything, how they cannot resolve their mundane issues like sane beings, and how they start pestering her and acting all buddy-buddy with her upon defeat.

To be honest I like Junko as a character and the idea behind her spells, but the attacks ZUN decided to give her are just so... boring. ESPECIALLY in the extra stage. Her bossfight starts with her firing a single ring every few seconds, as a stage 6 boss...

oh i just realized that her title "Secret God" actually means "God of secrets" and not just some untold god. Thats why her spellcards are based on secrets and her metaphor is backdoors

About "Okina is the Hakurei God" theory. Okina Matara is based on the Matarajin, the buddhist god. I don't belive, that the BUDDHIST god can be the god of the SHINTO shrine.

It's been confirmed recently that she's also the "Patron God of the Impaired." She showed up in a wheelchair, as ZUN originally wanted her to do in her Stage 6 boss appearance but didn't out of fear of backlash, because Japan treats disabled people waaaaay worse than the West does, and also because since he isn't disabled he didn't want to accidentally misrepresent disabled folk.
