Would you please make a video on "Mead Math"? I think that it would be helpful to many of us. Examples: how to calculate ABV, how to calculate how much honey or other sweetener to arrive at the desired ABV from a low O.S.G., etc. It would be good to see examples written out on screen and hear you explain. Thank you!

I only got back into mead making a few months ago after about a dozen year hiatus. I watched this series (more or less) as it came out. However, it is convenient that you put them all together like this. You are one of my top mead channels, maybe even the very top. Keep up the good content!

Regarding stabilising without sorbate/sulphite combo, I've started using Delle units recently. Only really useful for high abv and residual sugar but I like it for my 'big' meads. I still use sulphites for preservation at 25pp.

I think a video that I would really benefit from of a beginners video on any and all terms that a new brewer might run into. Things like YAN, session mead, and TONSA. I’m still learning and I keep having to Google individual terms.

THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING! Thank you so much for these. Quick question... in 401, you have a bluish mead in the glass carboy on the upper shelf. What is that? Do I want to make it?

If I had to guess I would say a blue fruit like blueberries or even blackberries or a mix.

Why does my traditional mead smell kind of like kombucha/vingary after primary fermentation it’s not overpowering but it’s there. I tasted it and it tastes like honey and it’s sweet so, I just don’t understand why it smells like vinegar/kombucha. Will the smell go away when it clears?
@ManMadeMead
@ManMadeMead 5 ай бұрын
It sounds like you had a faulty fermentation or a bad bacteria… unfortunately there isn’t much fix for a vinegar issue

so im looking to make my very first batch of mead, when i add the fruit this is before the bottling process correct?
@ManMadeMead
@ManMadeMead Жыл бұрын
You’ll want to add your fruit at the beginning of fermentation or after the bulk of fermentation has completed. You’ll definitely not want to try to bottle it with fruit in it still.

Just pitched the yeast in my second-ever batch. I’m making a cyser with apple cider and honey. My initial specific gravity reading was 1.136 yielding a potential ABV of 17.85%. I need a sanity check. Does that reading sound crazy?
@ManMadeMead
@ManMadeMead 11 ай бұрын
It really just depends on how much honey you added!
@mybearisdead
@mybearisdead 9 ай бұрын
@@ManMadeMeadAt that potential ABV, would it also depend on the specific ABV tolerance of whatever yeast they used?

What if you don't want to use modern way to produce mead. I watched a video where he added no yeast. Just left the mix out for a few days to gather natural yeast and he added a few raisins meadow sweet and dandelion leaves and achieved a 9% when it fell flat. I prefer to do things in the most primitive ways. Is this not a good way to go?

You're welcome to brew how you want! The stuff I teach leads to repeatable brews. Unfortunately, wild yeast aren't very predictable or repeatable unless you harvest them
@merrittmcdowell8675
@merrittmcdowell8675 3 ай бұрын
@@ManMadeMead sounds good. I am still in the research stage and just want to be safe. With regards to repeatable I'm not so concerned with that. I like to experience things our ancestors did and how they did. So consistency was no such thing back then haha. Maybe i will learn both ways it dont hurt and thats what intrigues me. Is there is no right or wrong way and if you mess up keep a mental note and move on. Learn learn learn!

A lot of the time back in the day they would keep the sediment from beers or ales and use that to kickstart wine or mead brews. You could do some small ale brews to try and capture some wild yeast then use that to start your mead. You could even make a sourdough starter with wild yeast then try using that. Consistency is achievable I think and it was important to ancient people as well they had traditions that helped their brews succeed they just didn't have the scientific understanding to get to nearly 100% All in all it sounds very doable. I wouldn't want to do it because it's too much work. but it's a fun concept.
