Hello from the west coast of Canada. It just isnt a Sunday if it doesn't end with seeing what Cheryl's made for tea this week. Your mystery fish for the fish cakes was cod according to the front of the bag you showed :-)

Everything looks delicious. Remember when my great uncle came to visit us in Canada he didn't know what corn was. Corn wasn't a big thing at that time in Scotland. Think it was used more for cattle feed

AH, but that's not sweet corn .Cattle Corn is hard and dry. Sweet Corn is succulent and tender.I can see why he'd be confused. It was a thing here in the US before most other places.

@@rowanrobbins It was a big think in The Americas. US and Canada had it simply to eat as a accompaniment with a meal.Howereve the rest of The Americas had it as a stable to make bread ectera. Remember when ethanol was the fuel of the future and someone pointed out that corn was a staple in a good part of the world. Ethanol stopped being the fuel of the future.

One of our favourites from the Asda economy range is corned beef. It’s much cheaper than the other brands but it’s really nice. It’s not fatty or greasy and it tastes just as good. It’s worth a try.

@Terry Evans & @What’s for Tea - I agree & definitely would recommend the Asda Savers tinned corned beef & at £1.90 for 340gm can compared to Princes @ £3.25/ 340gm, is a massive saving of £1.35/can & taste the same to me.

I may try the savers cooked chicken for a quick & easy curry meal. One item which I can recommend is the Asda Savers tinned corned beef (yellow can) @ £1.90/340gm compared to Princes @ £3.25/340gm = a massive saving of £1.35/can. Tastes pretty much the same to me. Sometimes filling your family is more important that what make of beans or quiche you buy. In this day and age we all have to watch what we spend, prices are so high, so buy the essentials and add a dollop of this and that to make it taste better. Great recipes and a realistic view on what you thought. Thank you for that Cheryl and thank you soooo much for sharing xxx

This was great, thank you, Cheryl. I have wondered what some of these cheaper supermarket ranges are like. I shop online and have recently bought my fortnightly shop from Ocado. Their own essentials type range is brilliant plus some of the m &s cheaper items. I spend no more than I would with Morrisons online and the quality is so much better. However, I still use Morrisons for household products and toiletries. Have a good week x

Thanks for covering this range. I do buy quite a few Asda Essentials and certainly I know the pasties and pies dont have much filling. You learn what is fine and what is not so great. Things like soups, baked beans, sauces etc arent that great on their own but add some herbs and spices from the cupboard and they become more than passible.

Great upload Everyone has different tastes isnt it I have tried a lot of it too,perhaps most is fine too. My favourites is the j.e tinned spaghetti,the short cut one,the crisps and some of the microwave meals. The bacon too. Gravy granules I regularly have. I don’t advise the ham but it may have been a bad packet though. I can’t do the fish,I will only eat cod and only cod lol 👌🙌💖

Coincidentally, we're having bangers and mash tonight also! I don't know that I could eat carrots out of a can. We like our carrots to be almost crunchy, not mushy, so I don't think it would fly with my family. Plus fresh carrots are available year round. No ASDAs here in the States and I don't really shop the big supermarkets here. I hate when I forget something and need to walk a mile back in the store plus sometimes the meat and fresh veggies are not the greatest. I don't shop the aisles much except for coffee and staples. I do enjoy your weekly meals and I'm sure the watchers in Scotland appreciate hearing your opinion on these other markets.

I shop at Asda because I’m very happy with a lot of their own brand gluten free range. Both my husband and I have coeliac and it is more expensive but Asda own are very good. Our favourite is the gf Cumberland sausage….they are so good. Other shops are catching up on the free from range but for our taste Asda co esp out on top.

I can’t comment on the Just Essentials brand as I’ve never seen them in Michigan but I would love to check out a Lidl’s one day if one gets close enough. I am a super fan of Aldi…love the Belgium chocolate products as well as most all of the products I purchase there. I will admit I’m not a fan of some things from Aldi but I do try things at least once before I turn away from them. I do wish our prices were as good as yours but they are not although Aldi still saves me oodles of cash compared to Meijer which I know you haven’t experienced. I try not to complain too much about the prices over here for I fear they are going to get worse before they get better but what helps me is canning, freezing and buying in bulk. I grow a garden and purchase what I don’t have room to grow from our roadside farm markets. Watching your vlogs help me a great deal in meal planning because I tend to get in a rut at times so finding other combinations for meal planning helps. I am VERY jealous of your butter prices because here in Michigan I pay $3.49 a lb. I’m thinking that’s considerably higher than your prices across the pond. And that price is at Aldi…our other store choice is as high as $5.49 a lb. Not a good deal but I will NEVER use oleo/margarine no matter what the price of butter. Might as well use Cisco shortening as a butter substitute-yuk!!!:):):)
@kcinca5410
@kcinca5410 Жыл бұрын
I so agree about the butter. I just use less and rarely use it on bread anymore. When I was young, I was teased about having a little bread with my butter. I do love it. Luckily, Trader Joe's has dairy at a reasonable price.
@davidmurphy816
@davidmurphy816 Жыл бұрын
Hi Vicki, our butter in the UK generally comes in a 250gm block, therfore 2 blocks = 500 grams which equates to 1.1 lbs as a guide to price comparison. So my maths insn’t the best when it comes to currency but I believe your $3.49 equates to around £2.85/lb, so your paying a lot less than here which can range from £4.50-£5.00/lb = $5.50 - $6.11. So you’re paying a lot less than us at the moment, the prices for butter & various spreads has gone through the roof here over the past year or two - it’s shocking!😱 Cheryl has done a video on making your own butter if you have a stand mixer & thick cream it could save you some money, depending on the cost of cream over there of course. Take care x

Oh wow…I guess when Cheryl talks pence it’s not as low as it sounds. I’m gonna look up pence and pound to compare to the US dollar. Hi Cheryl, another fun week of meals. We don't have Asda or Just Essentials here in NYC, but all the stores have house brands of products. Some of them are absolutely delicious and others are not so good. For example, Target has really excellent frozen meatballs, but their spaghetti sauce is pretty terrible. We like all the dairy products at Aldi, but their meats are disappointing. It's alot of trial and error, but there are some good deals if you're willing to put in the time and effort.

Here in Canada, for my family .. I purchase the "no name" yellow label, especially the butter, as I am fortunate when I can find it on for under $5 per pound. Likewise with Wal-Mart, some of their "Great Value" live up to their name .. lol. I was horrified yesterday doing grocery shopping at our small local supermarket, BIG tubs of ice cream have gone from $5 to $6 to now $9.49. Dog food is off the charts rediculous .. what used to be $29.99 is now $45 .. sigh, have to make more homemade for my two boys, they prefer it anyway .. Bless

I was not impressed with the Asda essentials. These products may be less expensive and quicker to prepare, but I tend to avoid more highly processed foods, and I really do not care for any canned vegetables except corn and tomato. The meals did not look nearly as nice as your usual homemade meals. Mr. What's for Tea is a good man for giving it all a go 😊. However, on the bright side, it is always so lovely to hear your warm, welcoming voice. Enjoy a very good week. My best to you.

I love chicken Kievs
@arthurvasey
@arthurvasey Жыл бұрын
I think you need to have two each of those kievs - even the ones that I get from Iceland, you would need two to get a satisfying meal out of them - or loads of chips! Most supermarkets’ own brand products aren’t very nice - they’re cheap for a reason - own brand cornflakeses, for example, don’t taste very nice at all - especially when you live in a place where they insist on using powdered milk on cereal - either that stuff doesn’t reconstitute very well or whoever insists on making it is very stingy with the powder-to-water ratio! Even some cleaning products aren’t very effective, either! I love a nice quiche or flan - my 60th birthday is coming up at the end of May and I have been promised loads of assorted flans with stuff like ham trim, bacon, egg, cheese and all sorts - had one with pigs in blankets in - sausages with bacon wrapped around them! Try making a toad in the hole with pigs in blankets in it - my sister uses chipolatas! As to gravy - I quite like thick gravy - other than Bisto, it’s almost impossible to get gravy that doesn’t thicken without adding cornflour to it - don’t use ordinary flour - not unless you like your gravy to look like cappuccino coffee!

Suffering for your sins for the Adsa essential shopping basket eh? Defiantly huge hit and miss shopping basket .MY OPINION!!!, I can imagine the more sadist in us would much prefer the "full" review or full opinion of what you really felt . what was left out rather shying away from what you really thought of this value range. You might not be able to express this but I would say this is probably a stay way rather than keep with the full shopping trolley of Asda essentials. stick to the classics m&S Sainsbury occasionally Tesco Aldi Lidl. love your reviews keep up great work many more success on your channel.
