This is fast becoming my favourite bushcraft series on KZbin! I'm glad the polypore worked out well for you and another great bolt on (although I am taking full credit for that phrase!) I tend to use bigger chunks of the polypore to resemble cramp balls and you tend to get a bigger ember. Great stuff though mate. ATB Muddy.

+Muddy Paws Cheers Muddy, I'll try it again with some bigger lumps and see if I can get a spark on it, the next time I do a 'bolt on' I'll roll credits naming Muddy Paws as 'Conceptual phrase consultant' ha ha!! thanks again mate. ATB Pete

+Dale Skidmore Cheers Dale, thanks for your comment, as for the solar, just giving a heads up really, in the vid the sun was behind that high wispy cloud & not getting through much at all, it's a bit hit & miss in this country at the best of times I know. But even in the middle of winter if you get a clear day & you've got some charred material you'll get an ember, just gives us another option, thanks again ATB Pete

I always tried with my glasses as a kid, but they would not focus the sun small enough. We used to burn our names on the shed with a magnifying glass.

I've used a similar fungus for charring and my best results came from shaving it into thin strips. Absolutely wonderful video, look forward to the next

Pete, great video, gorgeous breakfast, blackpudding too ,yummy, was that a finnish skillet you used, good char section as well ,we'll done at the end with the ember/hazel shavings ,now we know solar is the way to go, cheers for your hard work and sharing your meals in the field /experimental charring, craig

+Craig Twiner Thanks for your comments Craig, you're most kind, the skillet was originally sold as a chapatti pan, I picked it up at a general store (the type that sells mostly Indian ingredients & spices) and simply removed the handle to leaving just the socket , making it easier to pack and make a handle as and when needed from whatever is lying around. Hi there, and thanks for the show. These fungus are interresting. Well dried flakes may work as a fire starter by flint. A friend from finland told that they used to lit dry chunks from these to get mosquitoes away. I had one at a birch stump in my garden, so I tried. It worked quite well, and the smoke was not unpleasant either. Probably healthier than when I smoke a pipe. :) That english breakfast looked very nice. I am familiar with most of it except the last two slices of something. What was that? Some haggis-wurst, or? In Sweden we have liver-sausage, but it is mode grey. Just curious. :)
