Sorry I’m ridiculously late to the party here, but I’ve just started looking at camping wood gasifier stoves. There seems to be some debate as to how these stoves work, mainly…is this an updraft, or a downdraft…what’s the route of the wood gas once formed?…what gases are coming up the outside sleeve and through the jet holes? I did try finding explanations elsewhere on the internet, but all the diagrams illustrate the various designs of large home generator wood gas stoves, rather complicated industrial looking large structures…there appeared to be 4 different designs…including updraft and downdraft. But this didn’t really help in finding an answer to how these small stoves work. Then I found this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqrGdXqNrp2ln80si=UlRtyTxEWG95tw4e. Watch from 2:40. He used a glass outer, and smoke from a joss stick (?), to demonstrate when the gas travelling up the outer sleeve was just air, the stove performed the same as in its original state…so these camping wood gasifier stoves are updraft, not downdraft stoves. Have a look see what you think. Do you have any online references I could look at that shows how the stoves work? Thanks for your videos, it’s fun seeing how teeny tiny it’s possible to make them!

It's a long story, I first ordered one in olive green but the one they sent was a sandy colour, I spoke with them on their website and they said there must have been an error, they were most apologetic and after checking said they did not have olive green in stock but they did have 'Forest green', I said ok and one promptly arrived, this is the one that failed in the video. It turned out that this one was one of their 'first gen' models & was also much heavier than the first one. after I published the video THEY e- mailed me saying all their products were fully guaranteed and sent me a shiny new olive green oilskin tarp of their latest design, so eventually I get what I paid for (and they are not cheap). This is actually a good tarp well made and up to yet waterproof, (I used it in my last vid). so make of that lot what you will, I must also add that their after sales guy was actually pretty good and did everything to help. Thanks for watching. ATB Pete

The tarp is 3 metre x 3, the 'sleeping length' is whatever you make it, you could pitch diagonally for example. ATB Pete

Hey Pete, would love to see more of your Videos. What happened to the gasifier stove? Do you prefer a fire? In what circumstance would you break out the gasifiers?
@outsideedgebushcraft3017 Жыл бұрын
Hi John, I think there are around 20 vids on the channel if you wanted to see more, the gasifiers are all still good, I like to use them when out walking, they add a 'bushcrafty' element without having to bother with a fire, also if I want to get away quickly after a night camp or if water is in short supply (for dousing etc.). One fill of fuel is enough for breakfast and a brew. There is also the 'stealth' element to consider. There is a knack to using them (wind is not your friend) but if used exclusively for a period it's surprising how proficient you become and how effective they are, certainly a good skill to have in your bag. I actually transfer the sack onto a longer frame in the winter and put the doss bag underneath, this frees up tons of space for all the goodies needed in colder conditions (see One Tigris backwoods bungalow vid) and then just swap back in the summer, I do love those old ponchos though....bullet proof but heavy 😀 Thanks for watching. @outsideedgebushcraft30172 жыл бұрын
They are well made with 3 inflateable chambers encased in a robust canvas type material, when inflated they are stable and rigid. They inflate quickly and are easily stored, I would give them 9 out of 10

@@outsideedgebushcraft3017 very nice... By the way, about kayak camping.... Is it everywhere in the UK legal to just drop your tent somewhere and spend the night like you did in your video?
@outsideedgebushcraft30172 жыл бұрын
No, it is not legal but is not criminal either, it is a matter of trespass, if a land owner asks you to leave in person, then you must leave, I only use area's that are isolated from any pathways, am always discreet and never leave any trace of having been there, judgement must be used ATB Pete

Thoroughly enjoyed watching your camp set up pete.....Zoe and Gareths tip on the camo tarp was sweet......I've got some seriously good tips for you mate.....I recently bought a Helinox ground chair ....it weighs only about 550 grams....sits so low to the ground that you can easily reach for your drink/food.....it's like one of those camp kits ive never justified till of late...they are pricey (around100 squids) but my lord you will never look back! When you sit in them you lean back to the perfect degree too...youle never want to get out of it.....there are lots of other models but i wouldnt get them (say the Helinox chair one for example) as their legs are longer and tend to dig into the earth....Ive owned stools like the one you have but dont like reaching down for me drink/food....Helinox ground chair is amazeballs. Also recently i bought a Soto New River Pot ...( a fairly new korean brand i think ..or maybe japanese)....i can see your happy with your pots....but if you like your fresh coffee in the morning Soto make an awesome fresh maker (Simply called Soto Coffee maker) a ver simple coiled spring that you flatten/unflatten pop your filter in and place over mug....genius simplicity.......Another tip mate....i see you are using the billow bag to inflate the mattresses....now you can get say a FlextailGear TinyPump....genius little battery operated mattress inflater....theyre battery operated and tiny....blow mattresses up in seconds + dont leave any moisture inside the mattress (as compared to when you breath into them for example which may lead to them deflating slighlty in the night from moisture inside)....Thermarest x-therm is prob the best R rated mattresses yet they are expensive but a great investment for winter sleeping (or summer for that matter)....Please tell me do you love your tarp set up....i thought about buying one of those (OneTigris design i think it was ) but not sure what they may be like in the rain....I love the canopy though at your camp.....lovely set up....hope you enjoy me tips....and do please check out the helinox ground chair ...i love mine so much I relax in it in my log cabin after work even when im not in the woods !!
@outsideedgebushcraft30172 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, I do like the look of those ground chairs but my problem is that they are so low, and not being as young as I once was I struggle to get out of the bloody things, (as shown in my 'tarp first impressions video). The coffee maker does look an ingenious device but i'm a fan of the 'cowboy style' of coffee making, (just chuck it in a pot and boil it) gives you a great cup of heart starter in the morning. I have actually purchased a Flextailgear pump since making this video and agree they really do the job well, so small & light, however the billow bag also does the job, has no moving parts & doesn't need re charging so will always remain a contender. I do love the One Tigris backwoods bungalow, if a tent and a tarp had a baby this would be the result, I have used it in wet weather without any problem, it also has an integral bug net which makes it in my opinion perfect for summertime down by the water, you know, where the skeeters live lol. Thanks for your tips and taking the time to comment. ATB Pete

@@outsideedgebushcraft3017 Your very right about the chairs Pete...they are hard to get out of....I was super impressed with the bent nail cooking stand and your coffee method....I saw you shaking the pot up and down....do you get a few but minimal coffee grains in the cup when poured? I have never seen this before and this is the wonder of watching another mans skillset...Please tell me...I noticed how your bread bun came out with such a natural curve on it.....that blew my mind....and never seen coals on top of an upturned lid before...does this method help cook the bread inside on the top + bottom....does it force heat downwards into the top of the pot? to cook the top of the bread i wonder...i have never seen this before and find it amazing....
@outsideedgebushcraft30172 жыл бұрын
@@MIBIncomeEncourager Hi Alex, the bent nail/trivet arrangement was actually made from an IKEA cooling rack, I think I might post a short how to video as a few have commented on them over the years. You're right I was settling the grains of coffee with that up and down movement, sometimes I'll sprinkle a little cold water into the pot, that also works, I rarely get a grainy cup, if I do it's usually because i'm trying to drain every last drop lol!. The coals on the upturned lid do indeed cook the bread from the top & bottom, in effect creating a mini oven environment inside the pot, you can adjust the temperature by either adding more coals to the top or moving the bottom closer to the coals bed or both. Although it was a simple burger it tasted fantastic. ATB Pete
