What treatment killed your two plants? It is important for me and others to know. Thanks for your uploads!

I am so happy to see you and your Hoyas once more. I hope you are well and being mindful to take care of yourself first and than everything else. I would say Q-tip with alcohol, but you have so many amazing Hoyas to take care of. Make sure they are not in you potting medium first, If so you will need to restart the plants or use a systemic insecticide. May do a few plants a day. I love the shelves where did you get them? Be well

Hi there. I had the mealy issue in my compacta as well and in the absence of knowing how you treated, i can tell you what worked for me. I first sprayed down thoroughly with 50/50 mix of alcohol and water after removing from the soil. So everything was sprayed down, got in most of the crevices. I didnt let this stay long about 5 minutes then i submerged the entire plant in a room temp sink of water (not cold to touch, almost warm) with only enough mild soap to make sudsy. I let that soak 15 minutes and rinsed off. I shook excess water off and repotted. After that i did find 1 or two strays so i spray occasionally with alcohol and water first then rinse. I have used this method on my lacunosa and burtonae as well and the stress has made them my most prolific growers and bloomers. I also potted them down to attempt a less stressful recovery and placed them in bright indirect light.

Your videos gave me the confidence that hoya can be grown in OH in leca so yes, thank you neighbor!

Since there’s are in leca and the bottom is heavy, you can just dunk them in a mixture of oil + dishwash mixture where the mixture reaching every crevice and corner would kill them all. No need to uproot them. If they are due for a repotting, you can totally uproot. I spray this mixture at mine at least once a month, just to be on the safe side. Do this mixture dunk every week for 3-4 weeks. Just dunk and take out. Your Hoyas will soon become healthy. Make sure you shower them the following day of dunking. And once in a while put them all out in to the 🌧 that’s what I do. That’ll take off all the minerals buildup which will make the plant breath better and become healthy. This will reduce pest infestation since the plant is stinger. And make sure you spray the mixture on other plants in your house too. Ohhhh it’s a lot of advice!! 😄 I just want you to save them all!! You guys can find a lot of varieties there. But for us it’s very limited in Sri Lanka.

Thank you so much for that advice! By oil do you mean neem oil? I do have some of that! I like your idea of just dousing the whole plant and pot regularly. That sounds manageable 😅🥰
@anniesaddictions3 жыл бұрын
@@CorkysPlants I’m glad my blabbing was any help to you. Yep, I meant neem oil. It’ll be very easy. And this is tried and tested. With kids you’ll have to leave the plants outside for some days, if you are using a man made pesticide!! I love your 🎬 on reality. And I want to see every plant you have flourish like they used to Corky!! Good luck 👍🏻 on the pest issue.
@anniesaddictions3 жыл бұрын
@@CorkysPlants 1 table spoon neem oil + 1 table spoon of dish-wash mixed with 1 liter of water. Mix the 2 first and then add the water. Multiply if dousing in a bucket. If the neem oil is very thick, go with half a tablespoon. Nothing will happen even if you use a whole spoonful. No need to leave it in there, but shake a bit inside water, so the hidden bugs/ eggs get the solution. Then you are done. What matters is repeating this weekly for least 3 weeks.

They are vinyl gutters from lowes! It is nice how they sit in and decrease the visual clutter of pots.

The best thing I have discovered for mealies is to take the plant completely out of the pot and give it a soapy alcohol wash. I let the entire plant stay in the bath for at least 30 minutes to drown the mealies. I also had a mealy bug infestation on my Hoyas in my grow tent and I watered all the plants with Bayer tree and shrub and the mealies are completely gone.
@CorkysPlants3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I’m glad to know those methods weren’t harmful to your plants. I soaked 2 Hoyas in soap/alcohol for about 6 hours, and that killed them. It definitely took care of the mealies too. 😂 but I’ll be more careful about not taking it to the extreme. Do you have experience with the Bayer product with leca?
@ThePlantUtopia3 жыл бұрын
@@CorkysPlants yes, the Bayer tree and shrub works with leca. I just water the plant and let the bayer sit in the catch pot for a while and then dump out. I had a compacta that got infested with mealies, I ignored it too long and it started killing the plant. I cut a piece off, let the stem callous and then I soaked it in the soapy alcohol water for about an hour and put in leca in a grow tent and it has rooted and already grown some leaves. 6 hours might be too long.

I, too, soak any pest-infested plants in soapy water (I use Safer Soap). I usually soak plant/roots for about 15 minutes, but I'm glad to hear that your soaking for 30 minutes had no adverse effects on your plants. I also spray heavily with alcohol and quarantine the plant (bare root). During the bare-root quarantine I spritz the roots with water every day (or when almost dry) and check often for any signs of bugs. Most of my plants are grown in leca, so it's easy to rinse off most of the leca and place the bare-root plant into a jar during the quarantine process.

Thank you for adding your experience! I will be trying the soak method again, but for a shorter period of time. Your bare root method is interesting!
