Thank you so much, this video was such a help! I had the sneaking suspicion that one of my plants had mealybugs, but isolating it didn't help. I am a succulent farmer, and I am suffering an invasion. Thank you so much Iza! Yeah...that's a Canon w/ Sigma macro lens...I think I use it more to study my plants than to take pictures :) I think Texas mealybugs are tougher than others - I may need to increase the amount of alcohol in my solution too. Thank you for watching and dropping me a line!

I strongly recommend spraying the plant with undiluted rubbing alcohol. I've done the q tips, I've done the water (jet and bath) and they kept coming back. If you are not interested in doing this once a month, spray rubbing alcohol straight into the plant. I use the 99% one and it kills all eggs and bugs on contact. I repeat that once a week for 6 weeks or so. 3 years so far with no mealybugs. Note that rubbing alchool will not actually hurt your plant as it dries instantly.

Agreed! Recently I had my entire plant collection (over 70 plants...) get infested with mealy bugs and I personally found that the most effective method for getting rid of them was mixing isopropyl alcohol, dish soap and water together (I put some tea tree oil in as well since insects hate this) and using a spray bottle to apply. Unfortunately when it came to certain succulents however the mealy bugs were harder to get rid of so for any plants that I was unsure about I would just squirt some isopropyl alcohol directly into the plant and the top of the soil plus go in with q tips and isopropyl alcohol after just to guarantee there was none left lurking behind still. I found this to be the quickest and most effective method for getting rid of all the bugs tbh. I do suggest though if you’re able to move your plant indoors after spraying it with isopropyl alcohol that you go ahead and do so though and keep them in a area with low light for the next two to three days before moving them back outside, this will help to avoid the plant getting burnt.

@@vickiwest6389 I sprayed the roots once and they are fine now; very colorful. My Echeverias are as big as cup saucers. But, I had to completely change out the soil and rinse off the roots then sprayed them all down... all 21 of them, whew! However, my mealy problem comes right back, and really really often too. SO, I have decided not to get anymore succulents. I get cacti now. I know I know, cacti are succulents but they don't have that @#$%^ farina. When they get mealies, and they will, it's really easy to treat with neem oil. Farina is pretty but it's a PAIN!. The colorful thorns and flowers are just as pretty (breath taking really) and they are . Wear gloves tho.

@@SucsForYou You don't apply it while in the sun. Wait till sunset or bring them inside to treat. Alcohol never hurts my plants and I don't rinse it off. Plus it doesn't ruin the farina.

I did not quarantine a bunch of plants I received from a friend, 6 of my plants died and many had white moldy substances on them. I knew what mealybugs looked like but didn't know enough about them to think the cause from them. It's been about a month and I'm still getting rid of it. It was when I actually found a few mealybugs on a plant that ! me to look it up further and I'm thankful to have seen this video because all the other videos I've watched so far didn't give much information about the bug (just how to get rid of it). I'm going to double check my plants now.

Hi Kim, that's not dumb to do that. Cutting off the flowers is one of the first things you do when you declare war on mealies. That's where they attack first. Learned that from Cerriscapades (Chuck) he's very informative.

QUICK TIP: when the mealy falls off the plant it's mouth part is left behind. So the bug will eventually just starve. So if u knock a mealy off a leaf but don't quit kill it. Don't panic...it will be dead soon enough.

I've had a succulent for 4 years (got it at my best friend's wedding) and after 3 years of massive growth, I'm guessing a different succulent we brought into the house (which died only after a couple of months) brought mealybugs to our plant shelf. Now on its very last leg, I finally started google searching if there was a way to kill the 'white fungus'. Needless to say, I am really sad that I didn't immediately begin looking for answers when the white substance started showing up. I had never heard of mealy bugs until yesterday but they have become one of my greatest enemies >:(

Ive only recently started my succulent collection but i have a mealy bug and gnat problem.. i unfortunatly didnt quarantine them before i placed them near other plants😓 Would you recommend doing the alcohol bath on all of them and will this rid the gnats or should i look for an alternate solution for them. Gnat and mealybugs are treated differently. First try letting the soil w/ gnats stay dry completely for at least 4 days. This should help dry out any larva or eggs and not be so attractive to fungal gnats. Thanks for watching!

I would use mosquito bits for the gnats. But Sucs For You is right about letting the soil dry. If that isn't enough try the bits. Keeping the soil dry didn't work for me bc I have some Harworthias that need the soil to be moist. Letting the soil dry damages the plants, so bits worked. But none of my other succulents get gnats so Yeah, keeping the soil dry works.

My $3 Walmart Aloe Vera got infected with mealybugs, ugh! I took care of the situation by washing the whole plant in water, washed the pot, replanted the plant, and sprayed with 50% rubbing alcohol. I realized there was this brown part on the stem of my Aloe, and it was FILLED with mealybug eggs! I immediately took that part off and my Aloe has been doing better.

I'm not sure what my infestation was. It's happened a few times. It's always in the soil but when I dig a hole or pull the plant out, the soil is infested with a big nest of white cotton with little white dots in it. I never see any bugs come from this tho. I watered their roots yesterday before repotting. Then today I found my first 2 bugs. Grayish brown, didn't move, just let me pick them up and squish them. No idea if they came from the old nests or what.

You can try wiping it with a q-tip and see if it stays white or turns yellow/orange/wet - that would be a sign of mealybugs being squished 🤢

I hate to do it but as a last resort, when all else fails, Use systematic insecticide. The best is by Bonide. It's expensive but effective. Treat at sundown when the honey bees and predatory insects are inactive and treat when your plants are NOT in flower.

I have similar problems with my succulents. White stuff and deformed leaves, but there are so differences. I wonder if it is mealybug. The insects are tiny (ay most 1mm in length) and reddish. They are only at the end of the leaves (where the leaf is attached to the stem), so I cannot see them unless I detach the leaf. I doubt if the spray can reach them at all. Also, in many Aloes that I have, the bottom leaves turn yellow fast (they are still juicy, and the root and stem are healthy).

There are over 300 types of mealybugs mrec.ifas.ufl.edu/lso/Mealybugs.htm - also possibly spider mites (they make more webby type material than cottony). Aloes need a lot less water over winter but not sure where you're located ;)

@@SucsForYou Thanks, I think I have gotten both (mealybugs and spider mites) at the same time. Here is summer now, and I water my larger aloes ones a week, smaller ones twice a week. The roots and stems are healthy, the leaves are sick and turning yellow.

Those ants are too small to be Camponotus pennsylvanicus. The smallest C. pennsylvanicus workers are about 1/4 inch, but they're often larger. Those are some species of Brachymyrmex (Rover ants), either B. obscurior or B. patagonicus. Brachymyrmex are also known to tend aphids and relatives, especially root aphids, which as the name suggests, live underground and feed on the roots of plants.

I’m having problems with bugs not sure what they are they aren’t mealy bugs. They are very tiny kinda shiny n like a brown color. At first I saw white smaller bugs. I know longer see them. Now I see slightly bigger color bugs. Almost spider shaped but not sure what they are. I see no signs of webs or residue not even black residue.

This will kill my succulents as I get invaded too often. Tired of mealies, so I have discontinued collecting succulents and their dang farina, in favor of cacti. I can use the harmless neem oil and horticulture soap on them. No mealies! Hurrah! However, to keep ants away, use cinnamon on the soil surface. They HATE cinnamon, watch em scatter!

Okay, I just found this method and I'm going to test it out. Apparently fermented rice water melts down their waterproof layer shit so that it will die easily in the water bath thing Edit: I'm collecting the bugs and trying out the best method to murder these fuckers(I'm just so angry they killed one of my roses)

Unfortunately I killed them all in one swoop in my experiment with soap water(didn't even need the rice water but I'm still going to test it out) rip sacrificial plant :( i expected some to survive for more testing, I'll try to find more bugs tomorrow. but aparently you can get lacewings if you have a huge infestation. They eat anything they find on your plants and are harmless. They can wipe out aphids, spider mites, mealybugs and literally anything, they'll lay their eggs near food source(under leaves below the bugs) so you won't have to worry about it just scrambling around your house :') hope this helps Btw. These fuckers can swim. I bathed a part of my plant in soap water for 3minutes, they detatched themselves and died (turned orange brown) I then quickly bathed the roots and washed my plant

Thank you, I just got a baby Echeveria Pulidonis from Home Depot and the soil was soaked! As usual from Home Depot, but I couldn't resist this baby succulent, it was such a good find for Home Depot lol... And I get home, take it out to dry the soaked soil, and find a mealybug investation!!!! Ugh... I have never dealt with them before... I don't know what to do first.. Treat them or wait til the soil dries out.. The soil is drenched! I don't want the baby succulent to die! I have it kept far away from my others.. I also am worrying about the cotton egg sacs now, I feel like I have seen them on other succulents.. Ahh, now I am soooo hesitant to buy from Home Depot! I hope I can fix it. Thanks for your help!

Honestly I'd take it back. E. pulidonis is pretty easy to find and it's not worth risking the rest of your collection - or your peace of mind!

@@SucsForYou Oh my gosh I had to reread my comment to see if I mentioned my BF saying to me to "just get that thing out of our yard" lmao but I didn't, and you are still on the very same page as him... 😅 So perhaps it is not worth the headache... That was also his advice... (Err, strong suggestion hahaha..) Especially after hearing mealys are a constant battle, it is certainly not worth losing all of my collection! I am still learning, but it actually made me nervous about my past Home Depot purchases, and also had me take a 2nd look at this one particular succulent that is always losing bottom leaves & has weird white web looking spots on it... Today I removed that succulent as well, though I didn't see any mealys (the Echeveria was a total INVESTATION.. SO MANY!!! Couldnt miss them!) But to be safe I am isolating that plant also & giving others closer looks. I will DEFINITELY try returning the Echeveria to Home Depot.... I don't have a receipt but it is in the original pot.. HOWEVER if they don't accept a return, is it worth pulling off leaves to propagate before I toss the plant? 🤔🤔🤔 I'm not sure how safe the leaves would be on their own to prop... @@squirtleyujeong LOL! I've been through enough trouble, and heard from MANY others, so I know when something is worth trying to save or not. You can definitely try propagating the leaves. You will easily be able to see if there are any mealies left on them but keep an eye out on them. I've had leaf prop mealies and they target the 'cut' end where the new plant should grow. I KNOW!! I've come home with mealies from Home Depot before but give HD a break. Even the best nurseries can have them. I've heard some shoppers say they got mealies from the best nurseries. It's impossible for them to be 100% free of pests.
