Curtis Childs is the Director of offTheLeftEye at the Swedenborg Foundation. While obtaining his degree in communication studies from Oakland University, Curtis experienced an internal battle with depression that led him to question God and his lifelong interest in Swedenborgian theology. After a period of intense suffering, he recovered from his depression with the help of modern medicine, therapy, and a return to the spiritually uplifting messages he found in Swedenborg’s writings. Now, Curtis is applying his education and desire to help others find peace through Swedenborg’s insights by producing and hosting weekly webcasts.

That's right, Betty. When we can show up with love, we are led to ways to be of use and find our own joy increasing as a result of our participation. This applies to loving ourselves, as well as others, and making sure we too are cared for! (=

Friends and I have had discussions about what is love. It's always been so hard to define. Swedenborg makes things clear! Love: a Desire to do something Good, a motivating Force. So simple!! This Desire brings forth Faith. Faith: the recognition of what is True. The goal of Faith: Caring. Caring: Love acting through Faith. Good must be useful, a blessing for the individual and the whole human race. It goes round and round. It's about action. God is Love, the Desire for what is Good so God is a verb. Love evokes feelings, but is not the feelings. Wow, Curtis!! What a great show!!

The idea of getting our love to be connected to the right ideas so we can be of help to others is such a good summary of why we are here and live - thank you Curtis! “Those who do what is good for the sake of the neighbor or the Lord are in heaven.” Arcana Coelestia 9210:3. “The circle of a person's life is to know, to understand, to will and TO DO.” Apocalypse Explained 242. These were recent quotes sent by the New Church in the morning. I really appreciate your encouragement. I have discovered an amazing connection in my body. When an evil entity starts to insert a wrong/bad/guilt inducing memory from my past - anything like that and most likely the last one - I have a physical sensation in my gut - something like a shiver. This is an immediate reaction and warning to get on it and get rid of it. I am amazed by it and am so grateful for it as I do make a conscious effort to stop the intrusion before it puts down roots and makes itself at home - like nipping a weed in the bud. I also thought how heaven would be like no more mosquitoes. I have heard that the mosquitoes in the far north like Alaska are horrible in the summer. I am a huge mosquito magnet. So I imagine heaven as being a mosquito free zone - if you equate evil intrusions into our minds with mosquito biting at us. As I said - and you responded to - is that I know I am not a meditator in the Buddhist sense - tried it and didn’t resonate with it. But what I am is a listener. I listen to my thoughts, my daydreams, my physical reactions, to whispers and images from the spirit world. Right now I am deliberately trying to imagine being and living in a heavenly community. This I am finding to be difficult. So now I am imaging visiting a heavenly community like a summer camp experience. What I want, and think I need, is to feel I am in that place where I am with like-minded spirits, a family feeling. Since I have never lived with like-minded people - lived with some good and some not so good people - but never truly “kindred spirits” (love the correspondence to the term ‘KINDRED spirits’ as in ‘kin folk’ - as I imagine that is who we will live with some day!!!) I have recently reached a milestone where I feel great patience and acceptance of my place in the scheme of things - great trust in the Lord. And the more I tap into that place of trust the easier I breathe, and move, and feel comfortable and safe in my own spirit/soul. But I hunger for more. I want to have a sense of that mutually loving society, that sense of belonging, that feeling they have my back as much as I have theirs. This is proving elusive so far - but I have just begun my efforts. What I do is I lie in bed before or after a night’s sleep - and just try to imagine being there and how that would feel. I suppose this is a little like meditation but it is more like guided imagery because I want to create something, and its goal oriented with my active participation. Thank you for caring about my process. Blessings ❤️

Thank you Mary, I love hearing how you access heaven! The summer camp idea is very appealing and I might try that myself, hope you don't mind. It's so cool to see how we all process and interact spiritually. And the "mosquito free zone" totally resonates - there couldn't POSSIBLY be mosquitoes in heaven! How nice to think of a summer without them! Everything you describe sounds so much like what Swedenborg says about heaven - being surrounded by kindred spirits, in a home and place that resonates deeply with you. Are you able to come to the OffTheLeftEye experience we are holding this summer? If not in person, than there are ways to attend online! I hope it will be full of kindred spirit opportunities, and it would be so fun to have your point of view! swedenborg.com/events/otle2020/

@@offTheLeftEye Oh how I would love to attend your "summer camp" - but.... i don't think I can afford it - money or time wise this year. Gosh the participating online sounds wonderful and I will definitely sign up for that. I have gotten into an online Bible study using ZOOM meetings so we can see each other - it began with Dr George Dole's class last October - really makes a difference when we can be in the same "room" and see each other. The Lord is already helping me by suggesting I imagine I am visiting with people who are just like me on their "insides" - who process like me and who are thinking about the Lord and His Kingdom and how to be of help - I do that all the time. I was attending a birthday party this afternoon and one of the ladies there is so fun and sweet and considerate and sensitive - and I realized I could imagine spending more time with her. And I have imagined I have a twin sister and what that would be like. This quote from ES sounds important - but scary - but REALLY important - "Heaven is granted only to people who know the path to it and follow that path. We can know the path to heaven to some extent simply by considering what the people who make up heaven are like, realizing that no one can become an angel or get to heaven unless he or she arrives bringing along some angelic quality from the world. Inherent in that angelic quality is a knowing of the path from having walked it and a walking in the path from the knowing of it." -Divine Providence 60 ( It was sent in the daily emails from the New Church for their Forgiveness Project.) I pray every night that I will eventually be allowed to walk the strait and narrow path of righteousness for the Lord's sake as in Psalm 23. As Curtis has pointed out we need for OTLE to teach and reach us so that we know what is at stake here and now while we can act on it. Blessings to all ❤️

@@maryvalentine4924 It is clear to us that you are already on that path to heaven, Mary. All it takes to be on that path is a genuine desire for it, which you clearly have. The path is not an end result, but the journey of then learning how the Lord can gradually turn that desire into a living actuality. Hi Mary, congrats on reaching your milestone! This morning I was experiencing joy thinking about driving barefoot in my truck in the warm weather, connecting that idea to love. I so agree with you TO DO is the essence of taking that heavenly walk. At the right moment we take all the writings and throw them out the window and Live by ACTING through the Words! In Buddhist philosophy those evil entities as you may be aware are called “mindweeds”. The thoughts you are sharing, in my opinion, is meditating in the Buddhist sense, Be Well! 🕊

I grew up surrounded by mean people; sometimes when I reacted to things - it was mean and I didn't know there was another way. When people would tell me I was being mean, it struck me at the core of my being - I don't want to be mean. I found being nice was degraded by mean people. That was my learning trial in life; being kind is a choice - and learning to dodge the mean people. Mean is a spirit and choosing to be good, comes from an energy of good.

Curtis makes me laugh, undoubtedly coming from his love and caring! In another edition, the word charity was used and here we see caring. An example (in my mind) of problems symptomatic in translation. Curtis talks of those having equal love and wisdom such as a doctor. I actually find I'm "mean" when I care too much. As I often see what is right when others don't and it's frustrating on a personal level. I operate on a higher frequency than most which makes it uncomfortable to be around "regular" people. So they see me as "mean" because they do not understand me as they are on a lower frequency spiritually. In short, people tend to get angry at what they don't understand and label it as negative. So what is "mean" can actually be what is truth if you're not ready to receive the message.

@Debbie Mercer Debbie Mercer Debbie Mercer As I said, in the state I operate I no longer have to search for any answer as I have the answer already, which is faith. Not looking to fit anywhere as I know I don't belong here because of my faith. This gets misinterpreted as "ego" as you're categorized and what Swedenborg was highlighting in this passage. We must be careful with our own concept of caring being that in order to do so you must show interest without condescension, and putting in that "Honey" immediately puts a red flag all over you. Also the note of only showing interest when you find something abnormal. I have an old soul, and have experience, with that, it's rare I find anything "abnormal". I just see truth and not truth, but I digress and these concepts go over many "normal" persons heads...

@Rhonda's Portrayal, it can be hard to communicate effectively with people who don't seem to understand your spiritual state, and when we share our truth we can often feel misunderstood! Staying true to what you believe is so important even when others don't resonate with it, but I don't think it makes you "mean," it's just that many people feel uncomfortable with direct or blunt truth. That's a tough experience! @Debbie Mercer, I agree that we are all searching for some sort of truth or love or purpose, and this journey can vary considerably for each of us! So wonderful to focus on ways to find compassion for each other even when we feel misunderstood or frustrated with others around us - and NOT EASY! @Jay Norris, LOL, I'm so glad you can understand your wife's passion and energy for making the world a better place! Hi there Ronda, The way I look at it and works very well is this. I never allow myself to think people are in control of their reactions. I only see things in an environment of God controlling my surroundings. Always see it as an opportunity to raise up Christ within me. It is far better for us to be dis-liked than liked in this present environment. If we are liked to much, one has to wonder if they are in the right place. Being politically correct in a hellish place is not really going to get one out of the city. I do not allow people to control what I think. I only allow the within to speak to me. So you are right, being mean does not really sum up whether or not we are mean. Our inside voice is where it matters. It will tell us gently that maybe we have a bit to much skin in the game. Peace.

I was looking forward to this episode because I wanted to understand how meanness means no actual faith. We got to that here, but only at the end of the episode and I think I know why. Curtis wanted to emphasise what has to precede faith before it is genuine faith but I would have like a fuller explanation of why the faith of mean people isn't faith. Also, I find the constant need to explain how religion is perceived by many non-religious people somewhat upsetting. The best people I know are deeply religious. These people get no press, but they exist. Sure there are some hypocrites who grab the spotlight but I can't help feeling they are the minority who masquerade as the majority so that people will be turned off religion. Religious people are constantly involved in caring in the churches I've attended. I wish they got some of the spotlight turned on them sometimes. I understand why we have to separate religion from spirituality or actual useful living but spirituality can be sometimes kind of superficial and unfocused and useful living can sometimes be disconnected from actual usefulness because there's no faith or religion behind it. Religion does indeed have bad press but it isn't always always justified. For most of us, I think, the discipline that religion can provide is necessary. I compare it to school. While it is true that you can get educated without teachers or tests or assignments or professors and indeed the institution can turn you off education, to believe that most people can get educated without profs or exams is I think not true. Of course we can be bad at any vocation or program etc. but that doesn't invalidate the vehicles available for the training. i wish we could put in a good word for religion sometimes. It isn't always hated for the right reasons. Sorry if this sounds defensive -- I guess it is. I wish we could stop justifying people aversion to religion because when used properly it can be really helpful, in fact, I would argue, for many of us, indispensible, (sorry, sp?) to acquiring the caring and commitment necessary for faith. Obviously I could go on, but it was precisely, for me, that by dumping religion, I started to lose faith and I don't think I'm the only one. I mean, I would love more excuses to not go to church lol. THere are some people who don't need religion or teaching or practises or programs, they are already loving enough and wise enough without them. But for those of us still learning about spiritual reality, the structure it provides is necessary. Perhaps I should only speak for myself I guess. idk.

If something needs constant maintaining, it is obviously not a Truth. The religious thus political illusions are attempting to maintain a human form made of dust. There is a secret they never want any of us to know. You and I and the human race were never formed out of dust from this planet. We were all formed out of Spiritual essence from God its self. This dust man/wo-man must be maintain daily or it will fall apart. It is only a set of clothes, that needs washing, needs mending, needs constant spin to maintain its form. If you were more daring and less fearful of this illusion of the unknown you could find the within Spirit you are and connect the Christ mind receptors to this eternal you are. I wish you the best of hope that you might find this Source within you. Christ is what forms all things and can not change from its Truth. Dust is not a reality, yet it is a powerful illusion and it will change often. Such illusions need many lies to upholds its influence. Our Spirit (Christ) can not be threatened anymore than God its self threatened. Peace my friend.

Such a great point, Seann! Thank you for your comment. Yes, people do behave badly when they, themselves, are mistreated. To bully someone is a protection against being bullied. This instinct is very understandable! But ultimately, it does not bring repair or hope. Each of us has an opportunity to choose another way to cope, a way to cope that does not involve harming others or ourselves. It's been my own experience, though, that to find other ways to cope takes time -- and it takes willingness to forgive myself, and then forgive myself again! It's not easy, is it?! Spiritual evolution has to happen from the inside out, one person at a time. You can provide information for inspiration, but you can’t “do it” for someone else. Sharon, thank the Lord for people who can help the souls most of us don't know how or wish to help. You should not really care what others think of you if your heart tells you to help - that instinct to be of service is much better and truer than anyone who judges your selfless intentions. Find people who DO understand, who wish to help also, and surround yourself with a community of givers! If your heart tells you to love, that is the voice of God, listen! The only time I think helping another person is "bad," is if you are losing your self worth or confidence by getting sucked in to someone else's problems. Some people don't want help, and you have to let them make that choice and focus your energy on those who truly want help. God bless!

ok bear with me :) red is the color of love, blue is the color of truth, red and blue together is purple and purple is the color of spirituality. Coincidence? I think not. Colors are representative of emotions, moods, states, etc. If you know a little bit about color theory this is 101. Do a quick google search and you'll find out for yourself. God is the embodiment of love and wisdom and he is "equal parts" of both if you will. It's like Curtis said love caps wisdom and wisdom caps love so one can't be greater then the other in practical terms this is the same for us spirits. Then why is it purple is associated with spirituality? It has to be because spirits are manifestations of their love and wisdom combined. Pretty awesome little tidbit there.

@@portrayalc577 It could be a coincidence and your faith determines what you want to see. Truth be told is that colors represent many things at once but not interchangeably, it's not like yellow can represent love and in fact I predict "it just feels wrong" when you associate yellow with love. Red is with love and Blue is with truth is not based on personality types, it's ingrained in all of us. Combine red with blue and you get purple and purple is associated with spirituality among other things. Depending on the faith of a person they will end in different conclusions. I have faith that the world of spirits is lawful, orderly and meaningful and there is probably little or no arbitrariness to it all. This is why I can see how the marriage of blue and red is purple which is the color representing spirituality but that's up to the individual to conclude.

God is absolute love and wisdom but many times he is seen as a bright white light not a purple color. The actual colors of spirits is not purely symbolic, they shine colors with what their loves reflect, which can be seen as multitudes of colors shimmering in a dazzling display of beauty. Howard Storm described that when he peered into an angel he saw a symphony of lights and colors emanating in a brilliance he can't described. I’ve often pondered does Hell really exist, if so how come dark entities are still able to penetrate the physical sphere and cause harm to living beings. I was under the assumption that those whom dwell in the hellish regions are there for correction and are locked down there. Would love to see an explanation on how negative spirits are able to effect the living realm whilst locked in servitude....thanks.

This episode will give background about this whole connected spiritual network that we are a part of, and need to be a part of. See if it can answer the question you are wondering about: "The Angels and Evil Spirits With Us" kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXXRdqyAmrmdl8k

I agree, faith comes from love ❤️ I have been a mean person in my life, especially when somebody treated me mean. But it’s my own fault, I just didn’t see that I was focused only on those moments, not on the Lord, or his love.

Learning about God and his nature through the bible and Swedenborg definitely made an impact on me as well. I always remind myself in the heat of the moment that feelings come and go and I lift my head up and remember were my love comes from. I'm glad anger doesn't command me like it did before, I rather take my orders from God. I wish I could say I was perfect at this but my goal is to always improve.

It seems to me that EVERY person looks back on past years and decades of their lives and asks "What was I thinking???!!!" :) We can't know something until we know it, and there is great power in clearly realizing something now that we didn't know then, and making the effort to be a different person now. So, don't let evil spirits spin those realizations into shame. Instead, let those realizations empower your present! Here's a short clip about getting clear on the difference: "Shame Vs. Healthy Regret in the Repentance Process" kzbin.info/www/bejne/onKtgIdumZl-Z9k

AC W .....Your welcome. Our faults are within ourselves and it’s more difficult to see this when we are younger and growing up. I had to step back and see how I was treating others and how they were treating me. When someone gets mean, it’s so easy to snap back, but we must ignore it because it isn’t coming from us. 👍🏻🙂
