So, I bet you got an older meal. I just ate a 2021 date stamped tortellini MRE, which is probably even older since they stamp inspection dates 3-5 years after manufacture. The tomato sauce was creamy, very liquidy, like tomato sauce should be. Same thing with an elbow macaroni in tomato sauce I ate recently. Also, another thing that shocked me was the FRH (flameless ration heater) included in these newer MREs. Either the design is different, or age seriously degrades them from older meals, but the new one I tried from 2021 got SO hot SO fast that it *burned* my fingertips from just trying to mix it to start it up! Like, adding cold water to BOILING in 5 seconds flat. After I dropped it, it was STEAMING! I have NEVER seen an FRH heat up so fast or so violently. It got the food I put in there piping hot in literally a minute. Don't know why, either old age degradation or newer, more efficient design, but that US MRE FRH shocked me how well it worked.
