Dear Pierce and Andy, great video again :) I actually feel that I'm good a knowing my limitations and abilities and have a decent strategy when it comes to how to play the holes (of course everything can be improved upon). My major flaw when it comes to Par 5's, where I won't hit the driver and sort have the thought "I just have to get this 200 meters out" or "I'll hit my 7 iron on my second shot, but the direction doesn't really matter", I really tend to fail miserably on those "easy" shots. Eventhough I'm just pulling out my 4 iron on a Par 5 or playing that approach with my shorter irons, I find I have to pick a target. If I just go up and hit it and feel no pressure, that's when my inconsistent strikes occur. So just another tip that works for me, always pick a tree a bunker edge or something to aim at for those strategy shots :)

My difficulty is well illustrated in this video. 250 yards out and in a bad lie. I go for the 3-4-5 wood and try to reach the green. Good idea to reach for the higher lofted club and hit it to 100 yards from the flag. Good strategy.

I'm totally guilty of number 3, my 2nd shot, grabbing 3 wood when I'm 250+ out, I can't hit it that far even if I smash my 3 wood it'll only go barely over 210 and I'm left with a tricky sub 100 yard pitch instead of a better approach from 125 or so.

Great advice. My biggest challenge is a long 2nd shot. I'm a long hitter and can usually reach a par-5 green in 2. My problem with a 200+ yard 2nd shot is getting the ball to stop on the green. It often rolls off the back into tall rough, traps or knee-high weeds. A lost ball means a penalty drop and then I'm hitting 4 onto the green. I'd be better off laying up and taking a wedge onto the green for my 3rd shot.

You guys know more about golf than I ever will but it seems to be that a driver on a par 5 gets me closer to the green. I would rather be closer. If a well hit driver means the next shot can be a five iron instead of a 3 wood then that's good. I would rather hit a lob wedge into the green than a 9 iron. I realize I might hit a bad driver off the tee, but I might hit a bad anything off the tee.
@ChristopherTumminello5 жыл бұрын
I think their main point here is that sometimes a well-hit driver can leave you in a tough situation. On this hole, for example, a drive that misses the bunker may leave you blocked by that tree on the right-hand side. I think their main point is to take the time to think about your tee shot and where it will leave you vs. just defaulting to a driver because it's a par 5. How far you hit is another factor. For me, my usual drive will be around 250 so I'd be able to hit a driver on their demo hole without fear of going into the bunkers. Longer hitters need to factor that in.

Yeah if I could hit an iron 250 yards my strategy might be different too. Your job is to get inside 100 with as little risk as possible. Sometimes that's 3w plus 4i. Sometimes it's driver plus hybrid. Spread the risk over the shots wherever possible. Very few people can reliably get 400+ straight yards from two iron shots, if they can they probably know a bit about strategy already. The real question is 'what is the longest club I can hit safely that will deliver me more pars than doubles on percentage'. That is based on the width of the fairway not length of the hole. Also, Is the big trouble on 'your side' of the hole or will you naturally shape away from it? Water left is not a problem if you have a consistent left to right. Thick trees left is an issue if you play right to left and don't have space to aim away from it. Anyone who wants to get from 18 to 10 is going to have to start scoring the 5s consistently, and backing off is not always the best strategy. Be smart aggressive.

If I have a good lie and can't make the green I typically something like my 4 or 5 iron to try to get myself inside 50 yards while avoiding the big miss from a 3 wood. I feel like I am going to hit more greens from 50 and in than 70 to 100. Otherwise, I will typically play to around 100 to 130 yards so I can hit a full shot with my gap or pitching wedge.

Par 5s at mine are kind of easy. It’s just so not miss right on the first it’s road and ob the second is don’t miss long or right. I’ll just allow for my natural slice. Just swing the club that’s it not adjusting to hit a slight fade dogleg right on 2nd fairway starts coming back at 238. If I slice it I could be on the bank uphill pretty flat bank play at about 265 but really 245 then after that it’s 2 bunkers short I can take a 5wood clear the bunkers at about 212 at best. Sometimes I don’t hit it smooth and I could be short about 5 yards from bunker hit a high 60 putt for worse a 5-6 or attack and I’m hitting 4. I’d rather walk with a 6 and go for it. No risk no reward
@moves165 жыл бұрын
I like your tips like “have a plan”. But if the par 5 is 500 yards and your driver can make it to the 270 yard bunkers than it’s possible to hit the green in two. And if you hit in the the bunkers all you need is a 130yd PW to have a 100yd approach. On this hole there in no danger in hitting the driver.
@jamiewatchorn76395 жыл бұрын
I don’t have a driver or woods in my bag anymore. Start on a 3 hybrid, then my driving iron, irons and full wedge set. Most importantly though a putter I get on with. No point being on the green for 3 and then taking 4 putts

The big problem with most amateur golfers (me included) is, we try to hit every shot as far as we can with whichever club chosen. Sometimes especially if out of position it is wiser to give up the distance and take your medicine.
@Steff_p5 жыл бұрын
Strokes gained numbers show that you always perform better the closer to the hole you are. Strokes gained also shows that it is way better to go for the green in two if you can get it fairly close (30 yards from the green) than to hit a lay up. So hitting the ball to "your" number is a good tip if you want a higher score on the hole.
@meandmygolf.5 жыл бұрын
That all depends on the player and their strengths. It's always good to go for the green if you can get it close but that's if you get it close. It's just playing the averges and your strengths. We are all so different.
@Steff_p5 жыл бұрын
@@meandmygolf. Well if you are a decent golfer the statistics show you should get it as close to the hole as possible. So playing the averages in this case is to go for the green. Let me give you an example: Going for the green vs laying up You are 250 yards from the green on the fairway. Laying up to 70 yards in the fairway gives you a strokes gained value of -0,205. Going for the green but end up in rough 20 yards from hole gives you -0,075 If you hit the next shot to 5 yards from the hole on the green you will have to hit a 0,13 SG value better shot from the lay up position to end up in the same spot. If you hit equal shots (the same strokes gained values) from 70 yards in the fairway and 20 yards from the rough you will end up approximately 1,2 yards closer to the hole for your birdie attempt.

Not sure i agree with anything other than driver or 3 wood off that tee. Looks like way to much space to be giving up that much yardage. Even from that bunker you should be able to lay up to a decent spot on your 2nd, but your giving up the opportunity to reach in two by not taking driver or 3 wood. You are giving up way too much to the field by giving up that much yardage.
@billyclement50495 жыл бұрын
Ryan Barnett If you’re trying to play professionally or even as an amateur, sure, your giving up too much. But I believe this video is directed more towards the competitive weekend golfer. @edwinscox5 жыл бұрын
@@billyclement5049 Yup, you exactly described my situation. Breaking the distance of a par 5 into three manageable shots greatly reduces my risk. My average on par fives is seven. If I could take one or two strokes off reliably, it would help greatly. The longer clubs are riskier for me. Thanks.

I am really good at Par 5 scoring, my only mistake is I pull out driver a bit too much, but I hit my Driver very well on most days, the only time I do not pull out driver is, if there is no possible landing area within my normal distance - 20 yards. Then I usually use a 5 or 6 iron. I can reach most Par 5s in 2, but I am not very confident with my fairway metals or even my 4 iron so I mostly lay up for a 20-40 yarder as I can pitch within 10 feet 95% of the time in that distance and within 6 feet about 50% of the time. I only go for it in 2 if I can either run it up the front with a long club or can fly a 5 iron or shorter then I give myself a go at eagle. Last year my Par 5 scoring was actually under Par on average with that strategy, but Par 5s are a combination of all my strengths, as they are Driver, Wedges and short putts and for the lay ups I always choose a shot as easy as possible.
@mikerooneym62665 жыл бұрын
I used to try to hit my longest and straightest shots on par 5's because I felt like I had to get on the green in two. I've learned that it isn't very likely. My scores have dropped by playing a smart 3 shots to the green for a tap in birdie or two putt par.

@elviskrumlinde88545 жыл бұрын
He said pin’s at the left, and that the best angel of attack is from the right. Hm... laying up right side fairway will only make the shot more difficult, because there is less room for a draw. You want to pick a shot that’s Curving towards the flag and away from trouble. For example, small green, hazard is to the left and pin is on left side of the green. You don’t want to hit it in the hazard that’s why you should curve the ball with a fade away from the hazard. And there fore, placing your layup left to make as much room as possible to hit the green even with a bigger fade. But remember, pick a curve that might even start right at trouble but then fades away from it. Hit shot at flag not away from it. And make sure to place the ball so get as much room to do so.

I can hit a driver a long way, but I love my 5 wood. I can almost hit it with my eyes closed. So I go and hit that on a par 5 because I know I’m in the fairway and the feel of hitting a good shot carries over to the next shot. I had 260 left to the flag with no hazards, and I got guilt tripped into going for it with a 3Wood (which I’m not comfortable with), and stone cold topped it, brought that anger to my 3rd shot and topped it again. Don’t listen to other people.

This was a disappointing video, loft out if the rough is correct, rest just will hurt you in the long run unless theres really strong wind, theres little danger on that hole so open. You'll on average hit it closer from 20 yards than 120. Just nonsense.

5 iron tee shot on a par 5? That’s loser talk.

I read like you guys but you both hit ridiculously long compared to the average golfer. This is not as helpful as it could be.

My ego's pretty much ruined most of my summer golf season. If my ego had an image, it would be the shape of a 3 wood.

I hate listening to someone go on and on until finally they get to the punch line. Just tell me up front how much it will cost me. I didn't wait until the end. Too long.
