“Progress is measured by funerals” . . . I have heard this about social progress. It’s interesting to consider this for natural selection as well, as the current existence must always look at itself as the “optimal” solution.

This question has no objective answer, given how meaning, in and of itself, can be only subjective in a world of various conscious perspectives. However, I love hearing other people's answers, because sometimes their perspectives help me to further filter out my own meaning for life, or at least my own experience with it.

I remember my freshman year of high school, had Rotc and Wednesday was uniform day, decided not dress one Wednesday. My instructor Sgt. Jackson stood in front of me and said " Fowler you look smart, what's the meaning of life ?" Without thinking I responded " to keep life going." He looked and said" that's a good answer. But you're wrong, Fowler." " Rules Fowler, rules , the meaning of life is you got to follow the rules." You got a F, lol Rip Sgt. Jackson, thank you for your service of country and society.

It seems that our understanding of death is oftentimes in association with violence, yet one doesn’t warrant the other. There is a very old man ( past 100 who died in his sleep). This man was very healthy for his age and throughout his life, was Fortunate to not come across any extreme violence. Furthermore, if killing an animal for means of consumption is an example of violence, then killing a plant by eating it alive - is not?

Life has no meaning? What about become free from suffering?
@ignatiolu863
@ignatiolu863 2 жыл бұрын
I believe it has layers of meanings. There might be no SOLE meaning, but sections of them, chapter by chapter. Survival is what the vast majority has passed through, which was the meaning of life. Now I believe it might be Renaissance people, becoming one of them and create a civilization of strong self challenging motivated people in many fields and document each one's story (like Feynman, Lex, Einstein, John Dunaham, etc.). At least this is where I see meaning, the third tier is unknown, because we haven't got there yet. If it's all meaningless then there's no need to try anything at all, which brings emptiness, depression (lack of meaning) and possibly a quiet slow death of a civilization caused by sheer emptiness of meaning.

@@ignatiolu863 the root cause of all humans problems is ignorance. From the roots the plants feed themselves. Dive deep down there it's one adventure extremely trasformative. Why? Because we stop the root cause becoming negative (anger depression Avarice and other Thousand word)by becoming positive, wisdom, generosity, altruism ecc.

To talk about the meaning OF life, we have to say there is something to which life was made (life as a tool to fulfill a purpose). To talk about meaning ON life, we say that (as complete human beings) we can act to achieve an end that has no meaning outside our minds. So, life is meaningless if you are an eternal, emotionless observer, but meaningfull if you are living it.

I love that you tried to push back that violence and death serves a purpose in humanity and that your heart wasn't really in that argument. My best argument for violence is that the threat of violence leads us to harden our bodies and sharpen our minds in preparation. Those bodies and minds can then function better to move our species forward. I have to say however my heart isn't really in that argument either.

Its our next step in evolution. Learning to completely free ourselves from our primitive reward system. Once we free ourselves from anger, pity, etc we can get off the dopamine hook our reward system provides us. I fully believe a reason we are and been so violent is the never ending addiction to our own emotions.

Lex is hilarious, always angling for some transcendency to his own existence (and personal interests). When faced with brilliant arguments for life 'having no meaning,' he interrupts with a long magniloquence and then abruptly ends the conversation. Only after trying hard to justify violence, even going so far to declare natural death as "mass murder." Hilarious. Wrangham is subtly, yet profoundly, brilliant.

I don't understand Richard's sudden irrational dislike of the notion of violence being part of a Darwinian process to our success. Violence merely has human invented negative connotations. When in fact it is just a kinetic displacement of matter that provides advantage in that moment in time.
