Absolutely brilliant, very nice trailer. I will only make a safety suggestion, you only "lock" used to hold the lowering bar down to the trailer is not backed up with a safety pin or latch of some sort. It has been my experience that the current latch will, at some point, fail and allow the lowering bar to come loose and cause you lose your load. With the addition of the hold down hoops on the same lowering bar you are putting more load on the bar with no back up safety, again, causing the hold down pin to potentially work its way loose, rising up and causing your load to be lost since the hold downs are not attached to thw bas frame of your trailer. Fix that... and i think you have a superbly awesome bike trailer. Keep up the great work. Note, i did watch the whole video and if i missed where the lock for the pin is, well, thats my bad, im sorry. Still a great trailer

Pretty awesome build. There are two things I would suggest as improvements. First, I would not trust that short lockdown pin. I would want it to go all the way through the bar with reinforcement on both sides of the bar. Drill a hole through the end of the lock pin on the back side of the bar and put a clip pin through so there's no way it could come out in transit. If that existing pin fails, your lift bar is going to go up and your trailer will hit the ground. Since your tiedowns are attached to that same bar, the bike may get thrown from the trailer. The other thing I would suggest is on the ramp. You used an old ramp flipped upside down for your loading rail. That ramp has lips folded toward the bike wheels. I would fold those down flat against the inside of the ramp to prevent damage to the tires when loading or if the bike shifts sideways while towing. Otherwise, it's a great idea that's well executed. I do see I'm not the first to bring up the lockdown pin.

I took a used tilt trailer and removed the axle and tilt pivot and built an outer frame and made it into a drop deck trailer very similar to what you have here. I used the old wheel bearings for the pivot but I really love the hinges you made with just a rectangle tube for an arm connecting the two frames allowing the pivot drop down. I am making another trailer since the one I have is WAY too heavy and I was going to buy a pillow mounted bearing and use a long round tube for the hinge across the bottom of the whole trailer. Now That I see what you did instead of a bearing or something similar you used the hinges you made with an "arm" connecting to the ramp frame. I love the simplicity and less complicated fabrication and it also seems like this would give me more structural connection and stability than a couple pillow bearings would have. The welded hinge arms have more welded edges and should be a stronger connection. I am so glad I came across your video.

I love the over-center mechanism in this trailer. The whole thing could be easily modified to fit multiple bikes also.
@grahamstretch68633 ай бұрын
This is not an over centre mechanism, over centre mechanisms are inherently stable, this is not, it will drop without the locking pin whereas an over centre system would not! An over centre system typically reaches a point where it will self close, Kilner jars, some beer bottles, old suitcases and some trailer toolboxes use over centre catches, they will go tight and then snap closed pulling away from you as you press on them, this is definitely not one!

Absolutely brilliant trailer design for hauling a motorcycle and a great job building it. Very well done on building it as well. I believe it will have a long life of use and be a very safe way to haul a motorcycle. The only thing i could think of to add to protect the motorcycle from rocks would be some type of plastic or polycarbonate between the car and motorcycle on the trailer.

@exploringwithdave59263 ай бұрын
It does take skill. But the skills can be learned for anyone with a mechanical IQ or with a blueprint and some time. Tools can be borrowed or shop can do for you the parts and you can learn to stick weld. It's not super hard, but does take some practice. For those like me that have all these skills, the tools are less of a problem. I don't have some of these tools but portables can do the job as well. It might be a little more work, but doable. All in all this would be a perfect trailer for my Motorcycle.

great work. only suggestion is to add a secondary lock/latch for safety. Don't want to go down the bad roads and that single latch comes loose.
@Wolfyjinny3 ай бұрын
8.5/10 ...... Brilliant job, however, I see that you are putting a lot of faith in the locking pin that holds the lift bar in place, not only is it holding the bar with a small amount of stick out, but the bar is also the tie down point for the bike, if that pin fails then the bar lifts, the trailer drops and you loose all your tie down strength. Please take this as a suggestion from an old man who overengineers everything, Stay safe my friend and keep on building.

Wouldn't worry about that pin too much. The leverage is plenty. If the bike moves / wiggles at speed the chassis could be stiffer with higher beams (avoid pogo) and triangle beams (avoid snake move). As always great creativity. 👍👍👍👍👍
