Measuring Spoons
---------------------------------------------------------
1. Spoons can come in 2 shapes: ROUND or RECTANGULAR
a. Round spoons with a deep well are used for measuring liquids
b. Rectangular spoons are used for spices/herbs
c. Usually come with 5 spoons:
Tablespoon
teaspoon
½ teaspoon
¼ teaspoon
1/8 teaspoon
d. Can get spoons that are 1/8 teaspoon or smaller. My set of 4 have:
smidgen - smallest
pinch - a little bigger than a smidgen
dash - bigger than the pinch
tad - biggest of this set which is really equal to 1/8 teaspoon!
2. Adjustable measuring spoons
a. use these only for dry ingredients, NOT WET
3. 1/8 cup = half of a ¼ cup = 2 tablespoons
---------------------------------------------------------
My objective for this channel is to share with others what I have learned over the last 30+ years about living and eating healthier. I share my knowledge with my small circle of friends all the time. I am not a doctor, nor do I hold any type of medical degree, but I believe that my tried experiences may help someone else.
For over 30 years I have used every diet imaginable to lose weight, but I confess that I am now at home using the vegan lifestyle. I want to share what I have learned about eating and enjoying food. And, since I am still learning how to be more consistent with this lifestyle, I have decided to eat more healthily, realizing the weight will come off eventually. Though I have not reached my goal weight, I know that sharing with other people in front of a camera with help me to stay on course.
I have, with the help of my husband of 37 years, raised 3 grown children. I will also share some cooking shortcuts as well as some natural formulas I have used and still use for everyday problems.

I definitely need to get me those rectangular measuring spoons. The person that invented those is a genious! I've been spilling out my spices all over the counter to many time over the past several decades with my hand-me-downs from my mom. Thanks mom. Love ya, but I'm movin on! And thank you Berta, for another fabulous kitchen tool review. Love ya! Keep em coming!

Sure do enjoy watching your videos. I'm 67 and didn't know about the rectangular spoons. If a recipe calls for an amount that won't find in the spice jar, I've been using a smaller one and multiply the number of times needed. Thank you for looking into this. We can always learn something new. Blessings

Hi Ms Berta! I always learn something from your videos! While I've been decluttering the kitchen of unused gadgets that seem to accumulate over time, the set of 4 measuring spoons..the dash, tad, pinch and smidgen are definitely a set that would be used! Thanks for another video, Ms Berta! Kudos to Evan, too!! 😊

Thanks so much for your comment, Pat. I'll be sure to convey your support to Evan. He thinks my troup (I combined the words 'group' + 'tribe' and got 'troup' (not spelled correctly😊) is amazing. Those little spoons will help perfect your recipes when just a little something extra is needed...no more guessing; just use the tad, dash, pinch and/or smidgen, okay! Thanks again, Pat.🥄🥰

This was a wonderful video, Berta Jay; not only for beginning cooks but for cooks of all ages. I have two sets of measuring spoons (the metal round and the metal rectangular) hanging on a magnetic hook on the side of my refrigerator. It's so handy to have them there. I don't have to fish through drawers to find them AND it's nice to have (say) two tablespoon measures needed in the same recipe - one wet [oil] and one dry. Lastly, I love how perfectly your canisters fit on your countertop behind you.
@bertajay
@bertajay 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Lois, for your comments. About those canisters...they were my husbands before we got married. We have had them for over 40years. He got them decades ago at Pottery Barn! Thanks for noticing and saying something. I'll be sure to tell him. 🥰 👍🏾

You're right, Berta. I've never seen an ⅛ of a cup before - didn't know they made them! - but it sure would be handy to have one just in case. I have 2 sets each of both stainless steel measuring cups & spoons because you so often need the same measurement of a dry ingredient as you do a "wet" or liquid one - and I hate having to stop in the middle of a recipe to wash something. But I really like your narrow-style measuring spoons made specifically for getting into spice jars - that's good thinking. I may have to get me a set of those too. It's easier to get the spoon INTO the jar, rather than try to dump the spice ONTO the spoon. As usual, I learned something from a Berta video! I love it when I discover something new about an everyday object - the kind you think you know ALL about [but don't]. I hope you'll think about doing a Kitchen Essentials video about everything in the kitchen. Example - do you use an Insta-Pot and if so, do you recommend them - or are they just a lot of hype? Sometimes I think it's just companies trying to sell us more stuff [and my kitchen is pretty well-stocked as it is right now]. Have a great week, my friend! ❤️🥕❤️
@bertajay
@bertajay 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jane. Something I learned about having to use the same measuring spoon in a recipe: 1st measure the dry ingredient with that spoon 2nd measure the wet ingredient This way you have to use twice but wash only once. 😊 See if that helps. I want to share more things. I have to try out the appliance before I can say anything about them. Thanks again for your comments and support, Jane. I really appreciate it.

I love your little spoons for below the 1/8. My father used to say "just a tad" of cream in his coffee. I didn't realize it was a legit measurement! Thank you for your info and thoughts of my sweet father. CaliErick, "1.5 of tsp" really means 1 teaspoon + ½ teaspoon. This 1½ teaspoon measurement is half of one tablespoon. I am not sure what you mean by "what's good for 1.5 tsp" but I hope that answered your question. If not give me some more details and I will try to answer better. I do appreciate your question. 😊

@@xXStussyXxMLG YES, "1.5 of tsp" equals (now read carefully) 1 and 1/2 teaspoons. IOW, 1 teaspoon and a 1/2 of a teaspoon. 😌
