Memorizing the Beaufort Scale is a breeze.

The descriptions in the Beaufort Scale are an especially poetic way to remember the quantification of nature. Force 0. Calm. Sea: Sea like a mirror. Land: Smoke rises vertically. Force 1. Light air. Sea: Ripples with appearance of scales are formed, without foam crests. Land: Direction shown by smoke drift but not by wind vanes. Force 2. Light breeze. Sea: Small wavelets still short but more pronounced; crests have a glassy appearance but do not break. Land: Wind felt on face; leaves rustle; wind vane moved by wind. Force 3. Gentle breeze. Sea: Large wavelets; crests begin to break; foam of glassy appearance; perhaps scattered white horses. Land: Leaves and small twigs in constant motion; light flags extended. Force 4. Moderate breeze. Sea: Small waves becoming longer; fairly frequent white horses. Land: Raises dust and loose paper; small branches moved. Force 5. Fresh breeze. Sea: Moderate waves taking a more pronounced long form; many white horses are formed; chance of some spray. Land: Small trees in leaf begin to sway; crested wavelets form on inland waters. Force 6. Strong breeze. Sea: Large waves begin to form; the white foam crests are more extensive everywhere; probably some spray. Land: Large branches in motion; whistling heard in telegraph wires; umbrellas used with difficulty. Force 7. High wind, moderate gale, near gale. Sea: Sea heaps up and white foam from breaking waves begins to be blown in streaks along the direction of the wind; spindrift begins to be seen. Land: Whole trees in motion; inconvenience felt when walking against the wind. Force 8. Gale, fresh gale. Sea: Moderately high waves of greater length; edges of crests break into spindrift; foam is blown in well-marked streaks along the direction of the wind. Land: Twigs break off trees; generally impedes progress. Force 9. Strong gale, severe gale. Sea: High waves; dense streaks of foam along the direction of the wind; sea begins to roll; spray affects visibility. Land: Slight structural damage (chimney pots and slates removed). Force 10. Storm, whole gale. Sea: Very high waves with long overhanging crests; resulting foam in great patches is blown in dense white streaks along the direction of the wind; on the whole the surface of the sea takes on a white appearance; rolling of the sea becomes heavy; visibility affected. Land: Seldom experienced inland; trees uprooted; considerable structural damage. Force 11. Violent storm. Sea: Exceptionally high waves; small- and medium-sized ships m[ay] be for a long time lost to view behind the waves; sea is covered with long white patches of foam; everywhere the edges of the wave crests are blown into foam; visibility affected. Land: Very rarely experienced; accompanied by widespread damage. Force 12. Hurricane. Sea: The air is filled with foam and spray; sea is completely white with driving spray; visibility very seriously affected. Land: Devastation.

i remember this scale very well from my army-time; i was an observer, part of the job were weather-reports, with - you guessed it - wind in beaufort. the instructors actually taught us the scale exactly like deane, yet MY only problem was: my post was on a very flat area without trees and very short cut grass, so my weather-reports were guesses (turned out: i guessed very good ;)

We've got a low pressure system and a northeast breeze We've got a falling barometer and rising seas We've got the cumulonimbus and a possible gale We've got a force nine blowing on the Beaufort scale

It's like going through a time warp of intelligence. I click onto the video and get the ad ,I see a bunch of mother's rapping about the detergent that they're going to put into their dishwasher and then we get the intelligence of the curiosity show ,thank God I was born in the 70s 😂

Some tornadoes are categorized only imprecisely by the Beaufort scale. It puts any wind of 73 miles an hour (64 knots, 118 kilometers per hour, 32.7 meters per second) at Force 8. The winds of F5 tornadoes can reach 318 miles an hour (512 km/h).

Fun Fact: When Beauforts Mother was interviewed many years ago, she is quoted as saying "My son always had a knack to make the simplest of things overly complicated. Instead of stating things in a simple, and memorable way, he would take the most complicated and longest route to get his point across. The Beaufort scale is a very good example of that"

The only problem with watching the Curiosity Show as a kid was balancing the desire to learn with the need for more after-school snacks from the kitchen. The advert breaks were not always long enough.
