This was before their falling out. After Meat became ill and unable to perform, Steinman decided to perform the songs himself. As the writer, I suppose he could do that but it didn't go over well at all. Creative egos got in the way of friendship between the two. Sort of a Simon & Garfunkel thing.
@searchthenight5 жыл бұрын
@@anitanash6780 Bad For Good is still a great album, and they've made up since. I don't think there was ever some big disagreement. Meat just wasn't taking care of his voice and couldn't go for another record. Steinman was looking for a chance to be branded on his own in the 70s anyway. I very much like Bad For Good and other things that Steinman put together aside from this, like Pandora's Box. Great albums.
@borisVspider664 жыл бұрын
@@searchthenight I worked on the tours supporting Deadringer and Bad attitude.. as for the fall out with Jim it was about the fact that Meat had destroyed his voice doing the live thing and the ensuing fallout. Bad for good was supposed to be Meats album and he did indeed record some b4g tracks when they eventually reunited in the 90s.. I always Can't help but think about Meat singing some of the steinman/Tyler tracks too.. his songs with Jim are pretty much his best work although there are a few great non Jim and Meat tracks down the years.

Meat Loaf had three huge hit singles in the Netherlands, but he is mostly remembered by his first one: Paradise by the dashboard light. The song was a number one hit in the Netherlands in the winter of 1978-79. I was 12 years old them. I still remember that our whole school class sang the song spontaneously on our way to the sports hall (Hengstdal, Nijmegen), where we used to have our gym classes. Nobody really knew the words (not to mention the meaning) then, but that didn’t matter. Later I learned that it was in fact Ellen Foley who did the female part of this duet, so I thought that the girl we saw on “Top Pop”, Karla de Vito, was merely a lip synching stand in. After seeing the Rock Palast concert now I have to say: hats off to her, she has a strong voice and she certainly stole the show on this concert! My six guilders pocket money a week would have been sufficient to buy the single in 1978 (or a month of savings to buy the longplay) but I also had other expenses… So the album Bat out of hall I eventually bought much later, second hand, at a lesser price. Rock Palast Concert (or especially Rock Palast Nights) emitted by German WDR television were the cream of the crop, if you were in to live performances of popular rock acts in the 1970-80s. Living close to the German border, we were lucky to receive German television on our antenna when I was a kid and I still remember the great concerts by the Who, Kid Creole, Van Morrison, Grateful Dead, ZZ top. Missed Meatloaf in 1978 though. Great to have the occasion to see and hear his concert here after all those years!
@allisonmarlow1842 жыл бұрын
Jacques, she had to lip synch in the video because the recording had already been made using Ellen Foley's voice. Also, music videos were still in their infancy at the time. No MTV yet.

MEAT LOAF is among the Lucky one's, no longer on this EARTH to face the consequences of the final count down. Amazing how many years have gone by and how fast I'm back in 81' with all the feelings I felt listening to meat loaf the first time. Damn his passion makes hair on the back of neck stand up.

It seems to me that the older I get I'll discover another musician that's always been around for me to listen to and meat loaf is one that I now enjoy greatly, that guy is so brilliant that it is to imagine someone else coming along to fit in his shoes ,I get the feeling that he's Howling in heaven now.

Both Karla de Vito in this live recording and Ellen Foley on the album are technically infinitely better... but still, somehow he keeps up with them... some special kind of magic. Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf will be missed. Thank you, guys.

Great show! Of course he'd have the best behind him. Guitar-man, keyboard, chick singer, and drummer are damn good. Bass-man works with drummer flawlessly.

I was working at an outdoor arena and amphitheater in 1980, where I got to hear Meat Loaf perform a similar show to this one live, and to see parts of it. I'd heard lots of performers that year and previously, dozens of the biggest headliners of the time. Meat Loaf was a bit different. His music was at the crux of my breaking out of my over-parented schooldays and becoming a young adult, so I was already a fan. His show that night was more powerful than anyone else I'd heard that summer, and much stronger than it is here. The arena I worked in was known for its superb sound system. The music and his voice, his incredible powerful voice, reverberated everywhere, deep within all of us there. We not only heard him, we felt him in our cores. Dressed in a ruffle-fronted shirt as he is here, he strode around the stage like a mountain on the move, so different from the many skinny little singers that the 1970s were full of. He owned the stage, possessed the arena. Meat Loaf ran from one side of the pavilion to the other over and over, weaving everyone into the performance, pulling everyone into the magnificent energy of his music. The rafters literally hummed along with him, the very ground sang harmony. No one living could watch aloofly, it was not possible. A watcher may have hated him, but his face, his voice, his movements grabbed you by the throat just the same. As night descended, the lights and music on the stage seemed to emanate from him, as though he were powering it all. Cliché as it may sound, everyone was drawn along, sucked in, and played just like one of the instruments. His voice poured into us as the sweat poured off him. He bound us together into one beating, pulsing, musical encounter that left us simultaneously elated but drained and wanting a cigarette. He sauntered on stage, reached into our guts, and took us someplace unique that night. I don't want him to rest in peace; I want him to rip through the afterlife with a never-ending supply of the energy and creativity and magick that he personified that night. With my gratitude and blessings. Hallelujah!

You must be a writer now. Your description was electric. In addition, you perfectly described what it is like to be at one of his performances. Top notch. You should do an essay and have it published. Excellent! I am also a person who wishes everything was different. He needed to have better care for his voice, needed to come back to the east to have surgeries, (I am such an “eastist’). Because of being a social worker, I can assure you, he needed his own life but he needed someone to look after him. Not even a wife or girlfriend but just someone who he trusted and was looking out for him and not themselves.

My hubby met Meatloaf in the 80's.... because his adoptive Dad was in a bluesy band in Indiana. The guitar player, whose name escapes me now... knew Meatloaf before he got famous. So when Marvin was in Indiana one time... he jammed with the band at their house! My husband said it was electrifying and he was about 10 yrs old. Nicest, most humble man ever he said ❤

what a great show. Bruce Kulick in the 70;s looks a little like Howard Stern from the early 80's. Just read To Hell And Back ML autobiography. What a legend. He's worked with a lot of musicians over the years. RIP to Meatloaf and Mr. Jim Steinman

Once in traning for a cross country run I would walk to two tracks on the ipod and then run for one, after two brisk walks I got a live version of this! I ran to all of it and enjoyed every minute of it! That was 14 years ago, I still love the tracks but my running days are over, how Meatloaf performed like he did for as long as he dis was amazing

He celebrated the Rock And Roll Church in the best way possible. Everything was bigger than life, but always linked to pure emotion and PASSION. And yes, Roy Orbisons´ legacy is so strong with his music. The 70s were the richest and most creative era musically in every musical field imho . It was great to be a young boy in these times. Thank you for sharing Basil. WHAT A SHOW!!! And it was so interesting and insightful to see the interview and the mastermind of all this, Jim Steinman.

@@Helo1able I dunno, I saw Meat Loaf at a bar/venue in Northampton Mass called Bridges Cafe. While you're absolutely right that the album was better than Loaf live, I wasn't disappointed with the show. On the other subject, about being old now, yeah, kinda pissed off... Still, I wouldn't trade the music of our day for nearly anything that's come out in the last 3 decades or so. (i'd freely give away Huey Lewis though).

@@danielpepin2665 Not a big Huey Lewis fan? I agree with the majority of your comment, including Lewis, BUT although a lot were one hit wonders, the 80s had some great music! I'm just 32 and do prefer all the "older" stuff!! HUGE Seger fan!!
