The baseball footage is brilliant! He’s making it to first, second, and third base of making out. Then right before he gets a home run she stops him and ask him what his intentions are! I still laugh at that moment every time. Was so clever at the time to elude to sex on FM radio without saying anything to get the song censored. Brilliant!

Didn’t realize that Jim Steinman just passed away this week. For certain, he saw and nurtured something in Meat Loaf that others in the music industry had missed, a kind of “beauty within the beast” quality that was very relatable to fans that favored hard rock accompanied with lyrical narratives- something I think they didn’t know they needed until they heard it, if that makes sense? I remember seeing performances of Meat Loaf as this large hulking man, long hair, slightly unkempt and sweating profusely while simultaneously belting in this unreal rock vocal register. The juxtaposition was even more striking as Meat Loaf always held on to a wispy scarf as he performed which he used to occasionally wipe away the sweat. He certainly “looked” rock, but he performed with the vocal power and grace of Pavarotti. In addition to his considerable work with Meat Loaf, Steinman was also heavily involved in the career of Bonnie Tyler, writing and producing both Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out For A Hero. There’s a strong, strong connection between the sound of those two artists. Perhaps Steinman’s most successful collab was with Celine Dion on her 1996 Falling Into You release. The album produced the massive hit It’s All Coming Back To Me Now (as well as River Deep, Mountain High). Not only did the album establish Celine as an international superstar, but it won multiple Grammys including Album of the Year and Record of the Year in 1997. Steinman also received the prestigious BMI Song of the Year, awarded to the songwriter with the most radio airplay for a song within a given year. Add those four songs to Meat Loaf’s releases and there’s a clear rock opera vibe that runs through each of them. In fact Steinman’s entire body of work remains consistently “theatrical” in sound and arrangement. It’s certainly rock influenced, but it’s technically and aurally operatic rock.

So happy that you enjoyed this song! Thought it would have been rather poignant to watch given that the composer Jim Steinman passed away at the start of this week, but it wasn't. It was more delightful than usual to see someone discovering his music for the first time. You're right, both Steinman and Meat Loaf come from a theatre background. It's how they first met in the early 70s. Thank you for your reaction, it was much needed, made me laugh and brought a smile to my face. :)

Ellen Foley sang the female vocal part on the album which is who you are hearing but they used Karla Devito for the video because they thought she had a better look
@jwsel3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was that Karla Devito had a better look. Ellen Foley declined to tour with Meat Loaf. There are different explanations. One is that she was too busy (she was doing the musical Hair and appeared in the movie version, as well as released a solo album). She also told one interviewer she didn't like the idea of performing this with Meat Loaf: "You're singing backgrounds and then you go up and he sticks his tongue down your throat for 12 minutes."

If you’ve ever heard Celine Dion’s bonkers epic ballad It’s All Coming Back To Me Now, you’ve heard Jim Steinman’s work. He made his name writing these incredible rock opera style hits for Meatloaf. The 70s were the era of Bowie’s concept albums and bizarre characters, of The Who’s rock opera Tommy, of Jesus Christ Superstar and of course The Rocky Horror Picture Show (in which Meatloaf has a part). So Meatloaf’s epic songs, as wild as they are, fit right into that musical landscape. You’re 💯 right about this song being part of the 1950s nostalgia that became so popular in the late mid to late 70s, and continued through the 80s. Grease and Happy Days (with all its spin off series) as well as Back To The Future, Peggy Sue Got Married and SO many more are all examples. And lets not forget the huge popularity of juke boxes and neon in the 80s, and of course Madonna’s True Blue song and video. In a time of great uncertainty and upheaval, the masses found comfort in looking back on a time they perceived as innocent and hopeful, before the Vietnam War and recession, before serial killers and terrorists. Interesting to note, though, that most of the people looking fondly back were white and straight and cis gendered. Nobody who’d experienced the crushing conservatism, political witch hunts, racial segregation and criminalization of homosexuality ever looked back fondly on the 1950s. Btw I love your comment about these two probably being in a relationship... In the 70s no one needed to justify anything they did onstage! (I was also kinda waiting for you to pause Meatloaf on a particularly chunky shot and go “ohhh so that’s how he got the name)
@graphiquejack3 жыл бұрын
I enjoy the song, but every time I see this title in a karaoke lineup, I know I'm in for another 8-10 minutes of two people butchering it as I wait for my song to come up. lol... definitely has a musical vibe to it. Good catch. I never thought of that before.
