That's exactly how I do my spaghetti sauce here in North Mississippi. Mom always used green peppers and onions from the garden. The bought stuff doesn't even compare. Happy Sunday from Mississippi to Iowa.

Same! Its how I always made it. Growing up on a farm & had all we needed. Nothing is the same like back then. Louisiana love.

Until recently, I always simmered my sauce for hours, especially if I included sausage links. Now I make a quicker version similar to yours with onion and green pepper, but I always have to have some Italian sausage in it for the fennel flavor, and I've started adding a spoonful of sugar. Sounded weird, but it cuts the acid of the tomatoes.

I’m Italian and make this every once in a while. Only difference is instead of butter I use bacon as my first step. I also add mushrooms to it. I believe it’s called Johnny marzetti or American chop suey. It’s a great weeknight meal :)

This is exactly how my mom made spaghetti when I was growing up. I used to wake up early the next morning to eat the leftovers. It was the best. I still make spaghetti like this. My kids now do also. Yum. Thanks for the great video.

Thank you for including the tip for getting all of the product out of the cans. I'm a senior citizen and grew up in Oklahoma and my mom and grandma would be gobsmacked watching cooking shows today when they just pour out of the cans or bowls without getting every little bit! We were not poor, nor wealthy, but we were taught to rinse the can and scrape the bowl. Waste not want not.

NY’er and I was raised making it the traditional Italian way, but I will give this a try. Most people I know would say that’s not sauce, but as you said…You’re not Italian and you were raised in the Midwest. For me, it’ll be another recipe. 🙂

This looks so good. My dad didn't like a lot of green pepper in foods. So, my mom would always use the seed bundle in spaghetti sauce. It would stay together and give flavor without the strong flavor with a whole pepper. Shed freeze them in a freezer bag whenever she used a pepper for something else. Then she'd have them handy.

I love that you want every drop of goodness. I do the same but use wine to rinse the tomato cans. Couldn’t agree more about fresh Parmesan and not the “sawdust” in the plastic container! (Exactly what I call it too. 😉😆😬) But as always add or omit what you like and make it your own and to your personal tastes!

I agree with you about the butter. Even when I'm using a jarred sauce I will add a pat of butter or garlic butter if I have it on hand.

I do a similar sauce here in Australia - but I add red wine to the empty tomato tins to wash them out and I also sauté chestnut mushrooms (chopped) when I do the onions and peppers. I also add a bay leaf. I cook mi e for about 2 hours. It makes a great sauce for lasagna too!

You left out the basil and oregano (with a brief mention at the end). Vital in any Italian dish. Ideally fresh, but dried also works. I often add dried to the sauce, and then fresh (from my garden) into the salad which accompanies my Spag Bol (as my son calls it).

rinsing the cans/jars into the food also makes for cleaner garbage...which reminds me of my grandma. i once mistook a cutely wrapped package as a gift but she said it was her kitchen garbage and she was going to take it down to the trash. 🙂 i dunno...i find as i get older i'm just cutting corners left and right and i don't know how she maintained her standards...mine's just going downhill with no brakes 😀 [another quirk i picked up is to either use those can openers that don't leave a sharp edge, or if i can't avoid one because it's pull tab, i tuck the sharp lid into the can. my ex was saying he cut his hand while smashing a garbage bag down and there was a sharp lid. i've never tried to compress it like that so it never occurred to me that someone might get hurt by it so now i'm mindful of trying to hide the lid in the original can...]

Of course someone is going to complain about canned tomatoes. Why watch someone else's recipes if you don't like canned vegetables. Most people make their sauce with canned tomatoes. You know how many fresh tomatoes you need to make sauce? Way more then I care to wash and chop
