Although Tom has admitted he doesn't actually speak any language except English. A linguistics degree is about the mechanics of language, but doesn't confer understanding beyond one's mother tongue.

@@jboy966 About 40 years ago, we were playing a game of Fictionary, and the word being defined was "wentletrap", a type of sea shell. The person who chose the word added to the definition the totally true etymology that it was from the Dutch for "spiral staircase". That one added fact was enough for nobody to pick the correct definition.

@@jboy966 No since he was trying to act like he was lying. Thus giving as little stuff and acting like he didn't know what he was talking about. Hence the "it's a region". "have you now more" "yeah now that I have had time". Brilliant piece of crafting. The one with true fact tries to be as suspicious as possible, while the liars try to act as convincingly as possible.

I'd say, when the travel resumes, Tom should go to Lentokenttä and have some kebakko there. He could talk about the intricacies of learning, and how you are nore likely to remember things that have some story or emotion for you, rather than things you randomly encounter.

I'd rather appreciate Gary, in the throes of death, coming up with a mockery of Tom. This, being episode 1, probably launched the entire series into a 4-year project. Other episodes are good, but none have had anywhere close to the intangibles that this one has.

Another clue for the second round: "lento" meaning slow is a Latin root, whereas finnish isn't even on the Indo-european language branch, so it would be highly unlikely for a finnish word to have that same meaning!

Companies still existed in the Eastern bloc, even though they were owned managed by the government. Many companies founded in the GDR (as a VEB, "Volkseigener Betrieb") survive until today, obviously with changed ownership. Ever bought a Carl Zeiss photography lens? They also existed through the GDR's entire existence as a VEB, and were then once again privatized. So yeah, that is entirely plausible to me.

@@Taschenschieber I knew it was bullshit when he said it died out due to declining profits. Profit was not a thing state-owned companies cared about in communism, or care about in basically any economy. If he said early 90s instead of early 80s, I would have believed that, that's an absoulutely usual life cycle for a company formed during communism. They are big in the 5 year plans, then it turns out that their product is crap and/or useless, and they go into liquidation in early to mid 90s.

In the states, Kielbasa is sometimes referred to as "Polish Sausage" so the term "Polish sausage company" could mean "A sausage company in poland" or a "A company that makes polish sausages".

@@Hirosjimma Indeed. One of the main cues for head orientation in a conversation is localising the speech sounds. Without spatialised audio that rotates with the video, it would be trickier. But since most of us know the voices pretty well, I reckon we'd probably get used to it fairly quickly :)

I'm a Finn, who has eaten Kebakkos in childhood and worked at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. I think this was even funnier to watch when you know from the start who is right. :) Hope the next episode is full of non-Finnish stuff. :)

​@@nitehawk86 all you need to know is the languages involved as it has the right 'feel' of a Finnish word without even knowing the translation, that would only be a loan word in Swedish, although the other false one depends on what language a border community is using (so I immediately knew Matt was telling the truth and got to watch Tom sweat over it, to be fair the other two were great fakers though)

Never have I been more glad to know absolutely no Finnish than when Matt revealed that Lentokenttä means 'airfield'. I literally had tears down my face, crying with laughter! I had doubts about Gary's etymology considering that Finnish is not a latin-based language. But if it were, his story would be extremely believable considering "lentus" can mean 'slow' (as he mentioned) and "cantus" means 'singing'.

@@Carewolf both "lentoasema" and "lentokenttä" can be translated as airport. While technically lentokenttä is "airfield", the words are used rather interchangeably.

Studying linguistics does not mean learning a lot of languages: it means studying how different languages and language families work; but then again he did upload quite a lot of very specific language related 'things you didn't know' videos, so I can understand that people would expect that.

As a northern Finn, I had to check if lentokenttä is actually a region, and it turns out there are several (but only one had english wikipedia page). Torille..

As a person who once studied Finnish (I've sadly fallen out of practice terribly and forgotten a lot), I looked at "kebakko" and went "two Ks, that's Finnish" and from thereon it was similarly amusing. :D

Well, if animal shelters in Finland are anything like the ones I've seen in the US, it won't be anything new. I saw a shelter name a dog "Pumpkin Pie" once, and another shelter named a litter of kittens after various pastas.

I once was at a historical reenactment which for a few days was side by side with a poodle show, the kind when judges look at how well your dog looks or whatever (no idea wtf it's called, I don't breed dogs). We were up very late singing and drinking mead, went to bed at 4am and the next day the loudspeakers started at 7.30am AND HERE WE WELCOME THIS YEARS BEST IN SHOW LARGE POODLES: DANCING BOOTS GIMLI!" We were all dying from that 😅

As a Finn and thus knowing the answers beforehand, watching Tom be entirely incorrect both times was absolutely hilarious. But I didn't know kebakko isn't a thing outside of Finland!

Eh, yes and no. I know the Japanese have something similar, but they use toothpicks. They even have specialty pans for cooking them, but you can do it the old fashioned way. BTW< if you have a recipe for Kebakko that doesn't involve pork, I may be game to try it.

Just googled them, and look to be what I'd call a Kofta and be Arabic/North African in origin. They probably have different spices/flavourings though.

This is a pretty good spinoff to Citation Needed, sticking with finding articles on Wikipedia but with a fresh new twist and the role reversals. Can't wait to see more this season.

This is a decent format, and it definitely works, but I would prefer something with more opportunity for tangents - that's what always made citation needed and the podcast so good.

Kebakko is a mishmash of words "Kepakko", which is a kind of a slang word for a stick, and Kebab.

I actually had a use for knowing what lentokenttä meant today! My wife is in Finland at the moment and I saw a charge for Lentoasema something or other on our card appear today. I assumed right away that this had something to do with the airport and found out that Lentoasema was a synonym for lentokenttä and defined that the €35 charge was for an airport taxi since that is the flat rate for taxis at Helsinki-Vantaa.
