the fact that we have the Unlawful Enclosures act -- specifically to prevent the enclosure of public land by private owners -- and we're still dealing with corner crossing is, in my opinion, ridiculous. You want an easy solution? Here it is. If you are in a "corner locked" state, like WY, the state charges you for a stamp. Call it the "Corner Crossing Easement Stamp". Funds from the stamp do 3 things: they pay for corners to be properly surveyed and marked, they pay some small dividend to land-owners for the loss of ten feet of land to either side of a public-public corner, which effectively creates a 20' wide easement between corners, and it goes toward conservation work on the newly opened up public tracts of land. Either putting in water, or habitat, or recovery for various species, etc. There you go. Put it on the ballot -- and believe me, I hate ballot box biology but holy effin cripes, that's the only way those states are going to get un-land-locked. Everyone who buys a hunting license buys a "Corner Crossing Easement Stamp" and you phase it out over the next 10 years, or phase it into a "corner easement upkeep" fund or something.

I’ve said it before and gotten some flack for it…the #1 reason people stop hunting is because there’s no place to go. Hunting has become a rich man’s game in the US - you either own land, know somebody who will let you, or pay thousands of dollars for access. This is factually born out by the huge drop in the number of hunters over the last 30 years (except for a brief rebound during the pandemic). If the corner crossing does block all that public land… that be almost terminal for most people being able to access hunting. MeatEater needs to team up with the Sierra Club or some similarly well connected group in this issue - this is an issue where yall are pretty well aligned.
@D_Boone7 ай бұрын
Lol. They're simply not looking then. Unless you live in a few notable exceptions like Texas, public land is everywhere. I hunt public land exclusively and do very well, East Coast, Rockies, etc. The amount of public acres per hunter is only increasing as hunter numbers continue to decrease. I'm all for more public land and access, but pretending like publkc land is disappearing is simply stupid.
@carterwgtx7 ай бұрын
@@D_Boone Well i do live in Texas (along with 29 million other people)...so yeah. But also the data simply does not bare out that hunter numbers are increasing - with a notable bump during the pandemic...the number of hunters and % of the population that hunts has fallen pretty much every year since the mid 1980s. Stabilizing now at about 12 million (ish). And most hunters are older people...not a huge number of kids getting into it. The % of hunters who actually hunt more than 5 days/year is rising - so those who do hunt are hunting opening weekend or 1 week a year. The most optimistic data interpretation is that hunting is holding steady as an activity. Fishing notably has gotten much more popular...because it's accessible.

Minnesota has 3.8 million acres of public land one states problem doesn't encompass the entire us
@brett887 ай бұрын
Here in nh there’s tons of public land and you can hunt anywhere that isn’t posted.
@tomeidt70577 ай бұрын
@@D_Boone I think the public land is just disappearing slowly enough that people like yourself don't notice. It might not effect you, but two generations from now the great grandkids might not have a chance. Hunting only exists today because of protections put in place by hunters who realized land and game aren't limitless. If you're ok with public land shrinking because there is still lots left, than your not thinking about anyone but yourself.

A "double" is quite an achievement! First of all, you need to be lucky enough to get drawn for both.
