@@TristanBapst Where's new episodes of MeatEater, the actual Show? Season 13 is long overdue at this point, and there's been no real news on the release of it. Feels like they've been proliferating the youtube content, which is absolutely fantastic. But I really do like the big budget, epic adventure stuff the flagship show brings.

Finally, a show about a real outdoorsman sport. I love deer hunting too, but trapping is like Christmas everyday , it is a blast. It’s worth all the effort of skinning , fleshing, and tanning, and it keeps you outdoors all winter. There’s nothing better than putting steel in the ground. Hello from West Virginia.

My coworkers son trapped a lot in high school. When he graduated, he made a big crockpot full of shredded BBQ beaver meat for sandwiches for his grad party. He only told people what it was after they ate it, most thought it was beef. Good stuff.

Steve's observation on wearing fur vs. wearing a Cowboy hat made from fur was spot on, and it educated me that I fell into the "Trap" (pun intended) of not paying attention to the fact that they're the same natural material.

I started trapping before I ever learned anything about trapping. That is by sending squirrel tails in to Mepps to be made in to lures. The first actual trapping I did was in 1978 at 15 years [legal age in southern WV at the time] trapping muskrats. By the third season, I had made enough to by traps and started trapping, racoon, grey and red fox, and bobcats. Back then fur was still fairly good money and I trapped until 1984 when I went in the Army. By the time I got out of the service, the prices had dropped and no-one trapped. I tried a couple of time to start trapping again but areas that I could where few and far between so I never did but I still think of those cold snowy days checking the line and long evenings skinning, cleaning and stretching the hides. Great video Steve. Thanks for the memories.

I trapped all through high school 1978-1982. Muskrats were $8 and Raccoons were $25. Big money back then. The local buyers would buy them whole because so many trappers were ruining the hides. As I type this out my old wicker trappers basket still full of what s left of my traps is about 4 feet away from where I sit. Great memories. Thanks.

One word of advice is on my family property there were way to many problem beavers. So we trap them. About 25ish years ago. We start trapping them. We trap them all unknowingly to us it was all of them. Problem was we could have used a few to keep a couple nice ponds full and active without too much damage to forest. 2 great ponds eventually dried up. Wish we would have done more research for ourselves on how many to take.

We have so many things around here you could trap. Muskrat are a huge problem in our irrigation canals. Racoons and other predators keep killing our barn cats and the mink/weasels have broken into our chicken coop and killed all our birds several times. Not to mention fox and coyote. We even had a mountain lion next to our home last winter.

Grew up in farm country and was in high school in the mid 70s and at least 50% of the boys around the area were trappers. I being an only son of a farmer had no extra time for it but spent some time walking trap lines with a few of my friends and it really did connect you with what all types of animals were out doing. Many citified people were not as forgiving about the pursuit and would often voice their opinions, my favorite response was “would you rather we be out spray painting graffiti on your fence or cars” that usually ended the conversation 😅

Watching this video, brings me back to my youth growing up in Minnesota where I trapped muskrats, fox and the occasional mink. I would sell the hides to Berman Buckskin.....$75C - $1.00 for the muskrats, and fox would bring in anywhere between $5.00 - $15.00 pending on size and quality of the hide...this was during the mid to late sixties. It is interesting to see that the same skinning and stretching techniques are still used with possibly the exception of what appears to be something else used to dry the skin side today, verse our mixture of baking soda and salt. Comments in the video where made how the populations have grown from the point of needed protection to over population. I see this true in Northern Minnesota, where the timber wolf population once also protected, now is over populated and risky when walking ones dog. Minnesota DNR recently announced they are considering a trapping season to coincide with the selective hunting dates that was launched about 10 years ago.

Anybody that traps beaver through the ice with body grips. Check tip for you...rather than chip the ice to check your trap, take some lightweight housewire, you know the kind, 2 insulated wires, molded together that you can easily pull apart. Cut a 6 foot piece or so, length depends on your snow and ice conditions, you want it to reach the trap by a couple inches and reach your hands at a comfortable height. Strip a couple inches off of each side. Take one end and wrap it around your closed jaws, just a turn and a half or so. Set your trap in the water. Run the other end of the wire up and drape it over a stick that marks your location. When you check your traps, use a 9V battery and an led. One end of the led on the battery and the other on the wire, the other end of the wire goes to the other battery terminal. If the light is on, the trap isn't snapped. If it doesn't come on, you got a beaver. Less time spent hacking
