Why was the dockside crane illustrated on the box of my No7 outfit I proudly received for Christmas 1960. The contents wouldn't even make the cab! I often wondered how many extra parts to build it from my kit. Meccano is a brilliant way to understand engineering, physics and aspects of construction. Much more fun than 'Google' Great post, thank you.

Love the Finneston crane - that, to me, is the epitome of a Meccano 'super model'.

I think the meccanograph is brilliant, not taking anything away from the other models.

I think the old meccano is better than the new considering the old sets wre huge metal monsters that were fun to build and run

I'm from Glasgow and that model of the Finnieston Crane is excellent. Accurate in detail as well so good job by the builder. Would love to know how these guys do this? Everything to scale and accurate without plans??? Brilliant!!

That crane, known in their literature as a Hammerhead Crane, was a Meccano staple for many years - the old pre-war 'supermodel leaflets' included it. But that model, I think surpasses even that - however do you take something like that to a show? My 'Outifit 10' version blocksetter was big, and difficult enough!

Where do you guys buy parts for this? Certainly not in today's Meccano sets sold in stores,,,

You can still buy original or replica Meccano parts from dealers that visit the Meccano clubs, such as Dave Taylor (meccanoman.co.uk) and also there is lots of Meccano being auctioned on eBay.

London Meccano Club I had similar question... But now I see that the problem`s not only to build something, but also to find all the needed parts for it... It`s kinda sad because... You know, it`s not as available and open hobby as it could and should be... Ok, if the original parts are more in the scope of collector`s choice, so probably some replicas will be available in any time and in larger quantities? Or I`m wrong? And, for example, where do You get those hydraulic jacks like in some videos with excavators?

Meccano was recently taken over by Spin Master, a Canadian toy company, and already there are more sets available in the stores (UK at least) than before. Most of the parts are now metal again, and there promises to be some exciting developments coming in the Meccano system next year too! As you surmised, there are also replica parts available (e.g. Ashok Banerjee's range: members.tripod.com/ashok_banerjee/Meccanoville/Replicas_and_Specials1.htm) but I'm not sure where the hydraulic jacks come from.

London Meccano Club Oh, that`s good news. Where can I find more info (like where to buy some sets and what kind of exciting developments to be coming? On what`s coming, what exists and how to start... Of course, I can find some forums with Google, but You are expert, so I thought that You may know some trusted places... Thank You for Your answer!
