So did SRW W, even giving him a Prince of Darkness age version - also, gotta love the fact that that game had a stage where everyone gets pumped to the sound of the Gekiganger 3 music. Roughly related, it was neat how SRW R's time travel plot started with the darker ages of the Gundam and Nadesico settings, then sent you back in time.

to clarify the macross references the Nadesico gets an upgrade witch gives the secondary hull (lower body for all those non Trekkies,Trekkers out there) to have a similar silhouette and cannon firing sequence to the SDF-1 macross and they have an entire episode making a reference to the miss macross competition and Yurika does ware the same dress as minmay does in the original SDF macross. also there are small star trek ship design references scattered throughout the show including an Okuda gram with the hanger showing 2 star trek shuttles in the hanger.

There are some promotional materials for the "Prince of Darkness" that basically state that the movie was meant to to be an introductory chapter for a new series. There's no "official" conclusion, and so far the crossover games have come up with a few ways of closing the story. The most common solutions are either downplaying Akito's condition in the movie by stating the technology exists to rehabilitate him, or circumventing the events leading to the movie in the first place. I'm still hoping SRW V does something different with "The Prince of Darkness" storyline, since it wasn't meant to be a stand-alone movie. MX at least presented Akito as a darker counterpart for Hugo, as their circumstances were similar. I'd love to see Akito (and Lapis Lazuli) develop by ending the movie events early and THEN integrating him into cross-over and original character events.

I loved the darker tone of The Prince of Darkness... the anime was enjoyable, then the short of OVA was kinda happy and hopeful (not what I like, but it wasn't bad), and when I got to the movie I was BTFO. Going dark and then the ending being left to mere "hope" that Akito would come back made me so depressed. I think it took me 3 months to recover from it.

I really ought to watch this show sometime, but I'm torn on two mindsets; It apparently takes some risks when it comes to certain tropes which makes it stand out and gives it a rather unique flavor, but may also end up being all over the place with its apparent mood shifts for me to really enjoy it. On the other hand, it means taking me out of my 'comfort zone' and give me a fresh Mecha experience in general... but I blame SRW for making me wish Yamada stuck around till the end... I suppose I should get into it right after Zeta Gundam; Jumping from one bumpy ride to another should ease me in.

It’s criminally underrated. The English dub is a classic as good as Cowboy Bebop or Ranma 1/2. Always makes me sad how it just didn’t get the love that it should have.

I know it has a solid dub when compared to the original Japanese and it has some of the best references to both eastern and western science fiction. i will say it is the Babylon 5 of the anime industry for its unique way of looking at the mecha genre.

But even so, I think the harem in Nadesico is really enjoyable to follow than SAO, heck even most of modern harem anime seem un-bearable to watch it (except for Bakemonogatari and Bunny Girl Senpai).

The TV series is never SAO level of incompetent. At least the good guys and the bad guys have clear goals and interesting character arcs. However, it still suffers from tons of mood whiplashes. The main characters are likeable enough, but they can be severely out of touch with reality because of the exaggerated anime stereotypes. Half the time, it's like the main characters don't really take things seriously because the main ship has a gigantic barrier and overpowered cannon. The villains are the most interesting of the bunch since they're obsessed with anime and are abusing super robot's morality as an excuse to commit atrocities. There are depths to them as they can be viewed as a meta-critique on mecha genre or a deconstruction of the otaku culture, unlike Kayaba Akihiko who forgets his damn motivation and other SAO bad guys who are one-dimensional evil rapists that enrage the protagonist just because they're hurting someone he personally knows. Prince of Darkness is stupid in my opinion. Half of the casts are purged in coma and angst The otaku thing is thematically discarded, leaving it with no other identity than an Evangelion-wannabe. There's no sequel to complete the narrative. Emo Akito is atrocious to watch and Hokushin is the worst villain I have ever seen in mecha anime, ranking up there with SAO rapists for how much bone-headed sadistic he is. I scoff at his "I am darkness" cackling evil attitude and his stupidity every time he tries to do something villainy in SRW, like charging headfirst at a mothership surrounded by 10 ally robots that can end him in less than a turn with combo attacks.

The English VA for Akito was the same as the VA for Shinji from Evangelion and a lot of people used that as a reason to casually dismiss it as a "bad Eva knockoff" and dismissed Akito as a "bad Shinji clone". And, of course, a lot of other unfair comparisons piggybacked onto that. Ruri was compared to Rei, Inez was compared to Ritsuko, etc. And, of course, it was all shallow, ignorant criticism from cretins who couldn't appreciate the show for what it was worth, but there was just so much competing material available at the time that it was hard to stand out. Evangelion came out at a time when it could be a trendsetter while Nadesico came at a time where it struggled to make a definitive and distinctive mark on the Anime community.

This is the synopsis I got from Gamefaqs user megaxleox. The Martian Successors now wage war against the Nadesico crew for revenge because of their defeat on the Mars Ruins of the movie. Sharon Wieldling (of the Crimson Family) starts funding the Successor mechs. Ruri spends time looking for Akito though the whole game along with the Nadesico B (with Yurika). In the end, both the Successor and Sharon are defeated in a similar manner like the movie's ending (Ruri and Omoikane together are broken as f***) and without any sign of Akito, Ruri keeps looking for him. The game ends with a "To be continued" screen and that was the last thing Japan saw of Nadesico before King Records cancelled everything about it.

Hi! I'm that same megaxleox (back then using "x" on nicknames was cool haha). After The Mission game for the Dreamcast (the summary you just shared) a short one-shot manga was released showing Ruri and Haari visiting Yurika talking about Akito's fate, where she says she's sure Akito will come back because she just knows him too well. And that's the last piece of official plot about Nadesico before King Records cancelling everything because, according to them: "The public just isn't interested in Nadesico anymore", cancelling Stellvia with it too.
