I saw something. Hook a shop vac to your valve cover breather or oil fill cap. Turn it on right before you take the plug out so you can pull the plug without oil gushing on you. As soon as your hand and plug is clear of the hole cut the shop vac off. I also use a piece of double sided mesh emory cloth for filter changes. Find it in the plumbing section of any plumbing store.

@@extractorfan2143 Yep! I have the occasional one that just leaks for some reason, but very seldom. I prefer the fibre or aluminium washers, but if they only supply copper, (which is fairly hard), it helps to heat it up till it's red first. That makes it softer which helps to seal easier, without having to overtighten the sumpplug.

I use a drain pan that has a screen to catch the bolt. Much easier to wipe down a bolt that needs oil on the threads than it is to clean off the greasy oil from a magnetic pickup tool. IMO, the shop vac hack was the best. The oil filter can be loosened with an oil filter socket. The plastic cup over the filter seems limited to the filter already being loosened and presumably already dripping down the side of the engine.
