As for the coyote at the quick lube place, I’m mechanic at a place that does both mechanical work (not small time mechanical work, one of the techs just the other week did the Honda V6 piston ring job, we’ve done LS/LT lifter jobs, fairly advanced diagnostics, etc. admittedly, we try to stay away from major internal engine work, but if it’s something that a particular tech is intimately familiar with, we’ll tear a motor down quite happily.) and the quick oil changes…personally, I’m the shop diesel guy…once, I was over pulling wrenches doing my thing, and I heard Cummins noises, looked up, and it’s a 70’s dodge pulling in for an oil change…I walked over to the oil change side right as they’re popping the hood, and lo and behold, this guy had a 70’s D150 that had been ISB 5.9 swapped, I obviously immediately said ‘Oh! Uhh…that’s not supposed to be in there!’ And started talking to the guy, very interested in what was going on there…of course the lube techs put the vin in the computer and it came up with a completely different engine…fortunately they where smart enough to realize that the I6 that the computer said was there and the I6 that was actually there where a little bit different…I’m BSing with the guy and the lube techs ask me ‘uhh…what is this, what oil does it take?’ ‘Rotella T4.’ ‘Umm…how much?’ ‘12 quarts. And prefill the filter.’…ya…glad I was there that day, cause, as much as I enjoy working on those cummins’, if I had to put one in for free cause those jackasses put not enough of the wrong oil in it, I would not have been happy….

That shuddering brake situation happens to rust belt cars, mostly if stored outside for long periods between drives. Just an observation with the quick lube on the coyote. I have a buddy of mine who is a veteran. Combat wounded and lost both of his legs. He loves working on cars and especially diesels. But it's very hard for him to get down and do stuff underneath. He has to take off his legs and put on some rubber protectors over the nubs and everything. And its hard for him to maneuver like that. Because of this he usually has a quicklube/mechanic shop do his oil changes. But he is very specific with the type and amount of oil to put in. Could be a situation like that and the message was never given or recieved on what type of oil to use.

I guess knowing what you're doing and checking your work these days is heroic.
@tobiasthegentleman91318 ай бұрын
The new norm is "do things as quickly as possible". Anything short of getting a task done is considered to be cut from the task entirely. When you do an oil change (either for the first time on a specific model, or as a mechanic doing multiple a day), you need to: - Research the specifics (Oil type and quantity required, filter too.) - Research the method. - Do the thing. - Check that you did the thing right. Anything in that list that isn't "Do the thing" probably gets cut.
@Daniel-ng8fi8 ай бұрын
Its not mechanic stuff, but at my job I have to check fixes other companies make to their software, and theyll send us a list of things they fixed, and at least half of it is exactly the same as it was before. Most of it is the easiest shit in the world to verify too, but they never do. It's at least 80% of companies we work with are like this. Then they come back with "oops, we forgot to update such and such, it should be good now", and even then lots of times it still isn't changed. Fucking no one verifies anything, it blows my mind.

My dad was a mechanic for 50+ years and he'd be slapping me from his urn if I never checked the fluid levels after having work done on my car. He made sure I know how to do an oil change in an emergency, change flat tires, and do basic brakes if I absolutely needed to. Nothing funnier than seeing the faces of the mechanics that just worked on my car watch me, a woman, lift the hood and start double checking dip sticks, battery, hoses, belts, the radiator etc... Not saying they do anything wrong, but I've known too many women who've wound up having to take their cars back for repair work due to the mechanic(s) conveniently forgetting to top off fluid levels; especially oil and brake fluid. When I was e n my eaely 20's a mechanic once tried to tell me the master cylinder needed to be changed after they had to do my brakes and replace one of the lines. I saw that there wasn't any fluid in the reservoir so I asked why there was no brake fluid in it and how did they bleed the new line without it. They went back and fixed the "problem" for free and ta-da the master cylinder was just fine!😉

The car with the radiator hanging and the loose bumper was a MK 5 VW, and that issue is pretty common. The whole radiator support is plastic, and it breaks the first time you hit anything like a curb or parking marker. I had this exact thing happen when my lowered Jetta hooked its front bumper over a parking marker. As soon as you back out, the lower radiator support rips off and takes the front bumper with it. I was lucky, enough of my rad support remained to hold the rad up until I could fix it.

I once changed oil and filter on an old Merc that hadn't been serviced in a very long time. The filter was one like in this video and when I pulled it out of the housing, it completely disintegrated. I was pulling pieces out of the housing. He also had zero oil on his dipstick before I started the job.

The shaking and noise at 14:18 reminds me of the time my car had really bad brake pulsation due to warped/too thin rotors (whoever owned the car before me had a barrel scraping dirt cheap brake job done on it). It didn't always happen so it is probably more like thin, but on some roads the pulsation would resonate and it would get loud and bad very fast.

17:08 pretty sure that’s from a Cruze. I had a girl come in for an oil change in her Cruze and it was at 36k with no oil change. Her and her mom both bought a Cruze at the same time. I speak to her about how getting her oil changed more often and she said “do you think that’s why my mom’s car needs a new engine?” Her mom was at 42k with a blow motor.

The brakes in the first clip most likely had nothing to do with the mechanics and everything to do with the owner. They drove the car past the pads and into the backing. Metal on metal crime right there. We've all heard a car in traffic making grinding noises when the brakes are applied. That's the problem with being book learnt and not real world learnt. Much respect to those who teach but it's not fair to blame the mechanic for something the owner did. Keep up the great work, I look forward to every episode.

My very first oil catching device in my garage was a stamped steel enamel coated shower basin (30x30 from a salvage yard) with a coaster wheel (from a shopping cart) at each corner. Low enough to fit under a car, big enough to catch a lot of oil, and has a drain hole built in..

About having engines sit: A few weeks ago i started up my BMW 740 that has been sitting for close to 4 years. Old fuel, didn't do anything special to it, just new battery and cranked it over. Started in half a second and ran just fine :)

1:13 It's like managing your re-entry angle in order to preserve the ablative heat shield of your spacecraft: Go in too steep, and you'll create more heat than your shield can handle at any given time (it breaks up); Go in too shallow, you'll stay heated up for longer than your shield can tolerate in order to hold together (it peels off). Slam the brakes, you outgas and grind off a lot of dust. Ride the brakes lightly for long distances, you'll get brake fade as the fluid boils.
@Landrassa18 ай бұрын
Or as I found out to my own detriment: don't use the brakes often and/or hard enough and the rust won't be scraped off properly, leading to pitting so bad the rotors had to be replaced.

In the UK we used to use 10p coins; there was a circle of dots that was about 1.6mm from the edge you could gauge against. Since they changed the 10p coin design it doesn't work though (I think there's a similar test using the 20p coin now).
