This is not a one off scenario. I have heard when the PRNDL goes poof the vehicle shuts down. Never got a straight answer from people as to the cause or fix.....Just a eye roll and a deflated money cost for the fix. Sorry. But hey, your the right guy to figure it out. Our call South Main Auto.

Okay here goes! We have basically the same tow truck. To set RPM's - set parking brake, put PTO in gear, turn cruise control in, press gas pedal to desired RPM, hit set and release foot from pedal. Of course this only applies if your truck was properly wired at the factory that installed the bed.

Tow operator here use Small frame hooks in to frame rail or j hooks around lower control arms with chain shortened.. slide bed forward first then lower

BTW Ray if you look on the underside of your frame rails on either side where they straighten out there are winch points where you can put mini J hooks and/or the locking T hooks you started off with. That way you have a solid point to winch off of while also having enough winch line to pull the truck far enough on to the bed. Just a thought for incase you ever need to tow your truck again.

That does NOT explain the dead electronics in the dash. Totally different problem. Bad injectors will not stop your windows from opening and closing.

For future reference, you could place the tow hooks back at the transmission crossbar. That would allow Ray to pull his truck further up onto the tow truck bed.

no you shouldn't those crossmembers are not meant to be pulled on like that there are specific winch points in the frame rails that are meant to be pulled on which would reduce the risk of something breaking and the the truck coming down off the bed in an uncontrolled manner.

Sounds to me like a BCM Key Comunication / Security issue. Had this issue with my 2001 Silverado The key was not talking to the bcm finally found the wire in the top of the key cylinder was shorting.

I operated flat beds for years when I was younger , the chassis hooks on the bridlle get hooked behind the front wheels , that gives you a correct hookup. What your doing is pulling down as you get to the top.

It’s a wash on money saved. Factory in the cost of the truck. Insurance tabs and his time. At the end of the day that tow cost him more than it would to hire it out. Only reason I know is I have my own rollback and while I’ll never sell it. It doesn’t save you any money the 1-2 times a year you might actually need it lol 😂

@@Zach-k2p Yes, I am sure you are right about that. Trucks need to do work to justify their ownership. My dad ran a auto repair while I was growing up. We went out on calls in the dead of winter and sometimes the middle of the night. My dad said that we needed the wrecker but it never made us any money. We had to replace the clutch in the big 4-speed every year because the wench was really had on it. Also, had to buy new tire chains every year for those big tires. Good times in the 50s.

Ray, the old saying is if it's not broke don't fix it. You changed the instrument cluster that I think was working , some time after market parts don't mesh with the factory stuff.

If he got it where I think he got it, it's just a rebuilt OEM cluster with a fancy valence, with his vin and mileage programmed into it. Did the same thing on my 2004 1500 because the backlights were all dead and it was a soldered unit so no easy replacement.

I have a banks unit on my f250. the chip from banks went bad and shut the entire truck down, made every light on the dash turn on. I would suggest remove/ disconnect the banks stuff and see if the truck comes to life. In my case, Banks stood by their product, sent me a new chip and it has worked fine for the last 20 years.

Instrument cluster failure on a GM send it to United Radio. It probably took the network down. Not sure i think it has one of thr terminating resistors in it.

Glad you were able to effect a safe self-rescue, Ray. If it were me, I'd be suspecting a bad chassis ground somewhere or a loose plug/de-pinned connector based upon the symptoms you demonstrated in the video. However, you didn't show that in the video and based on your description of crawling around I suspect that was one of the first things you checked for. I'm really curious what took down your truck, and how simple of an issue it is.

Interesting, Ray choose to use the Deck, whereas i would have used the Autolifter (rear bumper 2nd vehicle tow mode) as its a REALLY big pickup truck(weight). Pick the truck rear, and lock the steering gear. Choices again.... Good on ya Ray... Let the Party Begin on fixing your truck on another Video!

My 05 Silverado gas did that, and it turned out to be the BCM went totally out. New BCM, programmed it, and all is well, now. Had me worried, too. I thought something major was wrong like the main ECM or every module in it blew up or something. I guess it's something that happens after so long of years that our trucks just take a dump on our heads...lol. Cheers.

@@Ghauster Ya , My lights went out on the highway at 2am so I hooked up off road lights to get me to a safe place to park and when I went to the dealer '' still a new truck '' they said you voided the warranty because you hooked the light directly to the battery without a switch or fuse, Same with the driver side window when it stopped working 2 days after I bought the truck they tried to tell me I was using it to much,

@@Ghauster All the way to the top and got no help, So I traded that truck at 30,000 miles because the warranty on the computers and wires was up, The shop guy when I was getting the second alt replaced said You better trade this you only have a few miles to go before we can't fix it for free, Bought it for a job pulling trailers and campers but after not being able to make it to work for the First week I lost that job, The lady at Fords head office said as long as the dealer keeps fixing it we will not replace it, I even asked for a trade in for a used truck and they said no but we can give you a good trade in on a new truck, I think the reason they never fixed it or put me in another truck was because I paid cash for it so they washed their hands of it, The shop kept telling me '' You are the First person to have this happen'' One time when I went in because a U joint or the axle was broke judging by the loud snap when it went in gear the guy said There is nothing wrong we drove it and can't hear anything, So I put it in gear and it made that loud snap and the guy jumped back and i said That Noise what's that noise ? He looked at me and said ''What noise I never heard it '' then he walked away, So one day when the dealer got angry that I wanted another loner car to get to work and they refused I walked into the waiting room and said I have this truck and this is what's wrong today and then I listed everything from no heat ,no lights ,Not starting or turning of or no 4x4 or some times 4x4 would turn it self on and sometimes the trans will drop to second and stay there till I turn it of and restart it '' fun on the highway'' and so on, Then others said we have the same problems and they said they never had this happen before, 1 guy said he was on his second trans and he only had 50k on the truck, I had so many problems people did not believe me that the truck was broke again so I started showing the work orders in a binder, The 3 worst '' scary '' problems were No lights inside or out one night at 2am on a highway I did not know, Then the time on the highway the truck went to 2nd and then limp mode till I got pulled over of the road and could put it in park and restart it and the 3rd was it would not start when I was working in -10 in the snow in the mountains and it was going down to -40 and I had no power at all no lights no horn no radio Turn the key it was dead nothing lite up on the dash so I sat there freezing trying to start it because the other guy '' buddy system '' started his and drove away because he said my headlights came on so he thought it was running So for 20 min '''key on key of /on /of over and over then it just clicked and everything came on and it started, I can see the news Headline '' SIngle Dad of 4 sat in his New Truck and froze for unknown reason,'' So I never went back up that mountain lol

Bold statement to say "End of Transmission" to close out this particular video without knocking on wood on camera. 😅 It's also interesting that people have said in recent videos that the tow truck has paid for itself when you would need to tow like 1000 more things before it would even be considered break even 😅
