I love your work, so clean and professional, very inspiring! I agree the black rims + wing are the key! Are the rear tires Hoosier or just a decal / painted with a stencil?
@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Really appreciate the kind words. And thanks for watching. The rear tires are painted, partially with a stencil and some hand done-because the stencil doesn’t adhere well or it leaves open gaps for paint to scatter. I wanted to do Hoosier instead of Good Year because my kit (#C) doesn’t have the Good Year marking anymore. And I thought it would be nice to be a bit different.

awesome build! I see other youtubers using the blue tekbond on the screws... is it a must? Maybe for the chassis, so it keeps everything together after bashing it (which I am not sure you'll do... would be a shame to hurt such a beauty)
@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Vinicius Brito! And thank you for watching. The blue thread lock? It really depends. I haven't fully ran this car so I didn't add it on some of the screws yet (those that go into metal threads). But in other kits I've built and when the manual says to apply it, I do. In my case, it's important because I'm worried of losing a part or screw when running a car. Applying it hasn't really damaged the parts and if it goes on non-metal parts I just wipe it off.

Thank you! For the top polycarbonate body I use two coats of Tamiya PS-6 (standard yellow) and backed it with a coat of Tamiya PS-7 (standard orange). I think the trick is managing the amount or thickness of coats you apply. Too thin on the yellow coats and it will look darker/orange, too thick and heavy on the coats of yellow and it might be a bit lighter. Good luck!

Love all your customs builds. Have a couple of questions. Where do you find those black wheels. Are they the same stile just painted in black? Did you painted in yellow and orange just the top body or the hole body and was after or before the assembly. Where did you find the rear spoiler and the bracket that is different that come in the kit Thanks

@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Erikootje and thanks for watching! The decals were just a collection of random decals (some old) I've had and some for other things like static models, and some not meant for RCs-like the Yoshimura one (that's for a motorcycle exhaust). The wing decal is actually the logo from the band Scorpions I got some time ago and I just removed the "s" in the end.

Hi. Nice video build. I was looking a video to see how to set the front wheels of an old scorpion that someone gifted to me. I’m trying to figure out if it’s better with toe in or toe out. I tried straighten the wheels with zero toe and with some toe out and it was sliding the front out. Understeer. Thanks in advance
@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Babis xalkias! And thank you for watching. The front negative camber on my Scorpion is not ideal. It's very extreme and only meant to show a mean stance. I do have a different setup for running. 2WD front toe-in or out will really depend on the track type, surface type, and your driving style. Typically, front toe-in helps with responsiveness and stable acceleration when exiting turns, but might reduce steering when you start to enter a corner. Also good for bumpy roads. Front toe-out is good for corner entry but might be a bit nervous exiting a turn. Then for the front negative camber, helps with turns where it tries to prevent the outer tires from rolling out on turns. But you do have to test different setups in your environment. I think the best negative camber is when most of the lower tire's contact patch still touches the surface.

@@MechanicAfterHours can I ask if you had any issue with the small sprocket inside the gearbox? After one minute testing it got loose. I found out that the tiny hex screw was loose. I tighten it and now that I did test it happened again. Should I use thread lock glue or it want do any good?
@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t worked on the original one and unfortunately I don’t have a manual for it. I think you have the one from the ‘80s. I believe their gearboxes are different where the re issued one has a differential. And, almost all the gears on the re-issue are metal and so I’ve never experienced issues. It’s pretty much solid and smooth. If the hex is loose and it mounts to metal then you can try blue thread lock first. And maybe move up from there with red or so. Or see if can find a replacement on ebay. Sorry, couldn’t really help much since I can’t see it. Good luck!
@xaralampos1959
@xaralampos1959 3 жыл бұрын
@@MechanicAfterHours I think it’s the one from the ‘80s 😅 I don’t have manual either. Don’t worry, you have helped. 👍🏻 I will try the blue thread lock and then a red. I’m more of a racing drone guy but with this old one I will go into car too! Here goes all my money now.

@@MechanicAfterHours it got loose again and now I used thread lock blue. I hope it works. And I found out that this model is from 1982. It had a mechanical speed control with servo moving it. I already removed it and put a used brushed esc from a friend. Is it possible that the gears and motor will work with 3S lipo? Thank you in advance again.

I have some extra Scorpion springs and I cut about 7-9mm off on front and rears. I also raised the shock collar to keep the car low. Mostly just for the look, character, and stance. But on the actual run, I will raise it up to a suitable height.

I built this kit a few years ago. I am not a fan of the front suspension linkage. It just feels like it is under too much stress and wants to come apart. Did you find anything similar?
@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 3 жыл бұрын
I'm in the same boat. I did notice the front part of the chassis when I was building it. In fact the alloy shaft block already had loose threads before I could even secure it. However, if I were to run it hard and use it as a serious runner, I would get Kyosho's optional CNC aluminum shaft blocks and caster locks, hard main chassis rail, an alternative rod end/adjuster that's stronger (even from another racing brand), maybe some Lunsford rods, stronger alloy screws for some areas that are very prone to stress. I also know there's an aftermarket alloy servo horn/saver. I know that sounds a lot but if one serious about pushing this kit that's what I would do.

@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin Long, thanks for watching. The decals are from various sources that I've bought in the last year and I've kept them for this particular build. Some I've had for a while. Some are old, some are from fleabay, some are not for RC cars, like the Japanese exhaust company or the music band, and so on. And then I used some trimmed some decals from the kit and another kit. In short, it's a crazy mix.

Kyosho chassis are far stronger than tamiya one and price are doubled too
@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 3 жыл бұрын
Depends really. Kyosho doesn’t have something comparable to a Hornet, DTxx chassis, or lower priced Tamiyas. If you’re comparing it to similar priced Tamiya kits or Tamiya kits of the same level, I can say the Kyoshos have better quality/value. I’ve built a Super Astute and that is more $ than the Scorpion and the Ultima (which performs way better). Similar to an Optima vs Super Shot. The Optima has better quality and can outperform the Super Shot in my opinion/experience. I do like both brands but they just have different approaches.
