I really love how you include your son in your day. I know what it is like to try and be productive with your kids around. You are doing a great job.

Completely agree Josh, I use a prusik with a homemade tender made from paracord. Way more solid imo. The ropeman was not great for 1 handed operation while letting out rope!

I’ve gone through a dozen versions and ended up back at the one I started with. I tried 3 different styles of knots, knots with cheap tender, knots with a rope pulley as tender. I tried to repel out of tree so I used a knot with an atc as a tender and various other things. I ditched the repelling thing after getting line caught up in tree 3 different times and having to set everything back up to retrieve. I believe it’s safer over all but with tons of branches and crooked trees getting caught up wasn’t worth the trouble. Yes quicker and safer to be fast down but man what a pain goin back up after quick link doesn’t release or fetches up. Little slower down but just as safe just not quick anymore. So after all the trials I’m back to a distal hitch and a cheap $3 tender and it truly works as good as anything else. I like idea of the mech devises but using 8mm rope knots and tenders work great and cost 1/4 of a mech devise. Also was an arborist for 5yrs and like idea of seeing a knot and not having something mech to inspect. Great video!!!

With the kong duck, you can avoid the loud click sound when attempting to lengthen the rope by shorting the rope first. It's kind of a hassle, but that's the best way I've found to remove the tension. You should look into one sticking for the next season.

IMO, the less mechanical stuff that could potentially break, the better. I use a simple nylon spacer as tender for my prusik knot.

You don’t need a tender for single handed operation of a prusik. Run the main line through the carabiner and pull into it. Works great on lineman’s rope. Little harder on tether once you’ve seated it in good with your weight.

I prefer a distel or the schwabisch to the prussic. Even with a tender the prussic binds too tight to move quickly. I will say make sure your tether rope repels water or doesn’t absorb it. When my oplux tether got wet it made it way more difficult to move the hitch.

Instead of Prusik, You should try the Hedden knot that John recently demonstrated on his JRB channel. It's stronger & really easy to tie.

Josh, serious question. Do you have a rope long enough to get to the ground in the event of a problem? With those two little ones at home I would think you might want to look into it. I myself just started using one. I still stick climb but use a full length rope as a tether/ rappell/ lifeline, way to the ground. Using JRB’s maverick hitch, and his Jrb ascender friction hitch, it’s a great safety setup for safe mobile hunting to me. I recommend looking into the JRB tree climbing channel here on KZbin. Particularly his two saddle hunting safety videos, he mentions things no-one else talks about ever that are potential risks. Third, I’ve been using his JRB ascender friction hitch exclusively for two seasons on my lineman, bridge, and tether, and now on my ‘lifeline’ and it is really quite impressive. I won’t ever use anything else. He also has testing videos on that hitch and others as well. Please check him out! He is a rope-climber for saddle hunting, but many of the things he mentions and or uses can be applied to the stick-climbing run and gun hunting you do. And to me, a couple pounds or less of lifeline length rope isn’t too much to carry to make sure I get home. He is also very responsive if you have questions you could easily reach out to him.

I use the vapor line for my lineman belt. Ditch the ascender on your linemen belt and just run it with the tender it’s not bad at all and no metal or extra bill and weight.

If you slide the Kong up just a bit then release it, it's easier and not as noisy

They say for safety you should always back up your device,,,So if you need a back it up then forget about the device. Just use a prusik.
