I set out to create a fully 3D Printed sculpture that would represent our expectations of pretty much everything these days (including love). We want it at our fingertips whenever we want it. Thus, the kinetics of the sculpture are powered by a finger swipe. Swipe to the right, and two halves of the heart come together. But as the old saying goes, easy come/easy go. As soon as you release the swiper, the halves return to their original, divided state.
This project gave me a run for my money- With a total of 4 rack and pinions, 2 gears, linkages, and slots, this really pushes what’s possible with only 3D printed parts.
If you want to print your own Love at First Swipe sculpture you can purchase the STL files here:

Not only the heart comes apart as soon as you let go of the swiper, but it also becomes tears 😯. Nicely done!

@@Engineezy You need to invent a way for those parts to change colors - Blue, when separated, and red - when joined. A parallax barrier perhaps?

@@volo870 I don't know what a parallax barrier is but a translucent Netherlands flag in front would do the trick 🇳🇱

Great work on this, holy cow! Was checking out RobBob on your site. Cool beans. What do you think of a circular marble labyrinth puzzle on its head? But keep the same constraints on it. Could be interesting, eh? Multi-level it with ramps you can go back up too, muahaha. Thanks and cheers!

Hi, I’m a senior year mechanical engineering student and also enjoy 3D printing projects like these. While watching your videos I have a couple design and software questions come to mind. How much do you pay for your solid works license and what version is it? At school we get the academic version but when I graduate I know I will loose access to it and will need to get my own license. For your 3D printed gears do you source gears from the SolidWorks part library or create them yourself? I had a class my junior year that was all about the design of gears and quickly learned that there is a lot of math and complexity that goes into designing a good and efficient gear train. Do you use a glue stick to get your 3D parts to stick to the Prusa bed? I just got my first Prusa and I use a glue stick to get my parts to stick but I’m hoping they’re is a better way. Keep up the good work! I’m going into design engineering after I graduate and I really enjoy your design methodology.
@Engineezy
@Engineezy Жыл бұрын
For Solidworks, they sponsor me with a license, but there is a maker version which is $99 and has all the features. For gears, I use my own library- its available for free on my website! And for the prusa I’ve never had any problems with adhesion. I use the smooth sheets and they really work well. Hope that helps!

As a heads up Fusion 360 has a free maker’s version. While I honestly don’t like it as much as I like Autodesk Inventor, it is still good to know there is some CAD software out there that is decent and can be downloaded for free.
