@ I think one of the fun parts about mechanical mechanisms like this is that in theory they often go both ways. If there are multiple wheels moving at constant speed, you could probably power any one of them and the mechanism would work

@Manabender
@Manabender 3 жыл бұрын
So, question. Do any of these machines have practical applications? I'm sure they do in theory; in all of them, a constant rotational input force is converted to some non-constant output force of some kind. It's just a question of whether that particular acceleration profile is useful for something. I recognize the second machine from part 01 as a key component in some video cameras. The film needs to remain stationary for most of each frame, but also be quickly moved to the next position while the shutter is closed. All of the other machines from part 01 seem useful as well. But now that we're in part 04, you seem to simply be throwing random gears and bars and other objects together for the hell of it.

I don't think any of these will be used in practical, except for demonstration or artistic purpose. These mechanisms are complicated for the sake of complexity. For the sake of maintenance and reliability these design wouldn't even be drawn on the table. It's an engineer's dream that will never come true.

I guess these are coming from an era where steam or river powered engines with no output power regulator driven a shaft with roughly the same torque/rpm and hence they had to come up with some sophisticated decoupling of mechanical discontinuity or break down a rotation to a repetitive horizontal/vertical motion. With the advancement of regulative combustion engines and later the electrical drives these old solution got obsolete and forgotten. Truly remarkable the ingenuity of those mechanical designs :)

It would be helpful if there was some kind of labeling for where the force is coming from. Most of the time it's obvious, but a few of them had me confused. Maybe the source of the force could be in a different color? Like for the first one the large gear could be in red instead of gray.

Novelty mechanisms are always intriguing! But many not often used and some used more frequently. Modern electronic control systems have often replaced such expensive to make mechanical mechanisms with equal or better precision. At times they can and do serve valuable purposes. Probably the most famous one is the Antikythera Mechanism and other such celestial clocks and calendars of the past. Other more common applications are differentials/transmissions in cars, Gearboxes for counter rotating propellers in aircraft and torpedoes and others. Fancy mechanisms are often expensive to design, make and maintain.

With so many ways to create the same motion, I find myself wondering which would be the easiest to fabricate, go longest between maintenance intervals, most powerful, have lowest parts count, least likely to break, uses easy-to-get components, operate the fastest, put the least load on bearings, be serviceable by anyone with common tools, etc.
