I learned how to work on cars because I couldn't justify paying a shop near $100/hr for the same crap I would be doing on a day off and buy any specialty tools I don't already own if they're needed. Plain and simple, I couldn't afford a mechanic unless it's something I wasn't comfortable with (10 years ago it was backing out a broken bolt in an aluminum head).

Yes, here in Colorado they're only worried about emissions testing, but dropped safety inspections years ago. I cringe thinking about people maintaining they're cars.

I used to do emission testing in Colorado Springs years ago. I've seen and heard it all. Hell, I've had people threaten me due to their vehicle failing. To some extent... I understood their frustration. People get pissed over failing due to a check engine light.

In 1975 I was working for a pontiac dealership. I had a 70 torino GT and I had installed the best front brake pads they had at the parts store down the street. I was racing one night on a 4 mile flat straight road we were racing for top speed I won and when I tried to slow down at around 145 mph the brake pads come apart it took a mule or two to stop so the next day I went back to the parts store lucky for me the factory rep was there so I told him what had happened and he says how fast were you going I said about 145 he says whats the speed limit so I picked up the box and said I don't see one on this box anywhere. He gave me new rotors and pads

When we had " zerk fittings " instead of greasless bearings, we didnt have half of these problems! "REMEMBER THE GREASE, OIL, FILTER AND REAR END LUBE DAYS"!

Wow, some of the damage of frame rust. That's one good reason for state inspections but as usual it's taken to the extreme. But seriously, I don't see how people just won't look under their car at least. Even the Auto parts store does a free computer read. Sometimes the engine light is to be taken seriously. Maybe schools should go back to teaching Reading, writing and Arithmetic.

I blame a lot of these underrepaired cars on today's self service attitude. People just put gas in and go. Use to pull into a station and they checked your oil, and tires and just looked your car over as you got gas.

Too much stuff is throwaway. Home appliances used to get repaired because they were significant purchases. Washing machine, 'fridge, TV. Now cars seem to be regarded with the same attitude. That or their owners are ignorant a.f. or stupid. Perhaps some have four pounds of cow c**p instead of a brain. The difference between ignorance and stupidity is that you can fix ignorance with education. By the evidence presented here some people should not have any mechanical vehicle apart from a bicycle.

I'm in carpentry and construction do not get it but people aren't mechanics and they aren't Carpenter's they don't understand some of the stuff that's going on. They're barely any shop classes

Most of the issues shown can be fixed with a squirt of WD40. One or two of the extreme cases may need application of some ACF 50. No drama.
