I'm having trouble with my 16 hp Kohler engine on my old Wheel Horse mower. I had ordered and installed an aftermarket pulse fuel pump ($24.95) to replace the original one, but it doesn't work for some reason. Then I found a used original part for $20 +$10 s&h but it hasn't come yet. Then I got on KZbin and saw your video. I had wondered if there were any low pressure fuel pumps for mowers and you answered my question so I also ordered the one you used. Hopefully one of them works. Thanks for the info.

I'm working on a JD 214 myself and plan on using a relay controlled by the key switch to run the pump. This reduces the current running through the key switch, which could otherwise burn the switch out if it's not built for that. I'm not taking any chances! I'm putting a fuse between the relay and the pump too.

@Dan's Poker & Motorcycle VLOG I have the signal wire for the relay coming from the wire going between the ignition switch and the light switch. My lights will turn on in the start and run positions so the fuel pump has power until the ignition switch is in the off position. I got a kit off Amazon for a 20A Bosch-style relay and holder kit to do this.

If it is a new problem when the pump was changed it is probably a little too much pressure. You could put a fuel pressure regulator on it. It is likely overwhelming the needle valve seat that shuts off the fuel when the float bowl fills. If it is not related to a pump change, it is probably that little seat that the needle valve shuts off on.

the filter is to keep the pump from getting damaged, I guess you could use 2.
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 4 жыл бұрын
I like to put the filter on the backside of the pump in case the diaphragm were to start to deteriorate. That way it won't send little bits of rubber into the small orifices in carburetor. You could put a course screen before the pump if you wanted and a finer filter after it.

Wait! You don't need one! Your gas tank is above your carburetor(like a lawn mower) it's gravity fed! Unless their is another gas tank not visible? But cool idea if your mower has a tank below the carb.

EXACTLY what I was going to say. This is true. Just transplanted a 14HP Kohler from a tractor to belt drive walk behind. Bypassed the problematic mechanical pump and let gravity do the job.

you didnt have to use a pressure regulator may i ask why?
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike Жыл бұрын
It's a low pressure pump, so it's only real job is to keep the float bowl on the carb full. The carburetor won't over-fill because it has a needle and seat that will shut off the flow once the float reaches the top of the bowl. It is pretty much just replacing the simple mechanical pump that is on these old motors. On something like a V8 you will sometimes have a pressure regulator so you can run a higher pressure pump and keep the pressure from dipping much when the engine really starts drinking it at full throttle.

I’ve already burnt two of these pumps up. They last about 30 minutes and they are gone. Any idea what would cause that. They have plenty of gas to pump and 12 volts supply.
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 3 жыл бұрын
Is the supply also 12v under load, or close to 12v? If it is dipping dramatically due to the current needs of the pump, that could cause a premature burn up possibly. If you had a dramatically oversized pump I could see that being an issue but I believe these little pumps do okay being dead-headed. My only other thought would be if it is too close to the engine or exhaust and overheating. One pump I could see being defective but two seems really odd.

mine burned too on briggs and stratton. Around 10 % of people complain on Amazone that the pump does not work after 30 min. Real chinese junk. Is there a more expensive quality pump with mtbf > 1E+5 hours ?

Installed electric pump on Kohler 17.5 hp craftsman tractor and now it stalls out under load, does that mean to output is too low?
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 4 жыл бұрын
That could be the case. Make sure you have good clean electrical connections. A bad ground could really drop the output of the pump. Also make sure your fuel filter is fresh and that the petcock coming out of the tank is open all the way. You may have a restriction somewhere. I had a piece of rubber get stuck in the inlet fitting of the carburetor on this lawnmower years ago which caused a similar problem.

So your needle and seat hold back the pressure from that electric fuel pump with no flooding. Ive wanted to convert my vertical Command to that but was warned about flooding the carburetor.

did u have to use a fuel regulator on that ? wont that be too much pressure for that small carb???
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 3 жыл бұрын
No regulator for that little pump. I think if you got any bigger you would probably over power the needle valve. If you buy a pump, make sure to get the little 2.5-4 psi one or whatever one I used (I put a link on the description). There is a similar looking one that is 4-7psi which is probably a little too much.
@Rodrigues680

I ordered the same pump and is sending to much gas to the carburetor what can I do help please
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 3 жыл бұрын
The 2.5-4psi pump generally should be good for any lawnmower engine. There is a higher pressure version so make sure you don't have that one. I would check the needle valve in the carburetor. The little rubber seat on it often wears out and causes the carb to spill extra fuel into the engine rather than shut off when the float bowl fills. It's probably the most common issue with these old carburetors.

I installed the same pump on my 1970's John Deere lawn mower and the gas blows out the carburator where the air filter goes on. Any idea why?
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 4 жыл бұрын
Did you get the low pressure version of the pump? There are some that look about the same but are not in the 2.5 to 4psi range. It could also be a bad float or bad float needle valve that is preventing carburetor from closing off the inlet once the float bowl fills. That is pretty common actually, especially on an older tractor. The float needle valve has a little rubber cone on the tip that can break down over time.

It just needs enough to keep the float bowl full. I used a 2.5-4psi pump and have probably a very similar fuel demand. There is a link to the fuel pump I used in the video description.

If the fuel is gravity fed like yours, why does it still need a fuel pump?
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 3 жыл бұрын
The fuel tank is only about an inch above the carburetor. When driving up a hill the carburetor could end up a bit above the height of the bottom of the tank. With a steady few psi of fuel pressure you are much less likely to end up in a circumstance where the engine is using gas faster then the gravity feed might keep the float bowl full.

I wouldn't recommend converting a lawn mower or anything that came not equipped with an electric fuel pump because you're just asking to destroy your whole engine you need to use the stock mechanical fuel pump that is intended to be used. Of course try to avoid the cheap chinese made ones and get a branded one if in the budget. I heared people say they did convert to electric and didn't have problems but that isn't always turn out to be true.
