Mono Shock Suspension Vs Dual Shock Suspension - Which Is Better? | Motorcycle Suspension System

Dual shocks, even if old tech has its own charm to hold on to things. Roads previously were in a pretty bad shape. And by that we mean absolutely bad. Hence you will find all the commuters of today as well sporting Dual shocks. Even the scooters are equipped with Dual shocks. It is not just that two means better or something, but there is a lot of science that goes into it. Indian roads used to be bad, which means the bikes would have to go through a lot of stress while on the road. This meant more stress on the swingarm and hence there was a need for an able system to soak up all those bumps.

Now mono shocks are the new entrants to the Indian market, they were present in the foreign market since a long time on the high capacity bikes, but even the vintage bikes still contain dual shocks. With dual shocks it becomes easier to haul all the bike’s load, but the problem occurs when the load bearing and shocks’ suspension travel is not matched properly. Plus with a light weight chassis of the bike, dual shocks are pretty much useless. Hence the use of monoshocks came to the fore.
With all the superbikes and sports bikes, monoshocks are used on a regular basis. Very rarely can you see a higher capacity bike using dual shocks, unless of course you are riding a touring machine. In that case it is necessary to have dual shocks because the stress on the swingarm and shocks is really high and hence the single shock might not be able to take the entire load. But with a monoshocks it is the best used with bikes which are perfect for cornering since dual shock are not able to take variable load on them and hence handling and stability in cornering takes a hit.On the other hand the monoshocks remain quite stiff and hence can handle any load from any direction as they are perched right on the center of the bike and hence they provide ultimate cornering ability.
Also monoshocks allow the bike to be a lot more stable on the highway at higher speeds. So that is another added advantage here. They are a lot more bulky than dual shocks and cost more as well, but the overall functionality it offers totally justifies the higher cost paid for them.

Why monoshock bikes have wider tyres? Pulsar 150 with rear dual shock absorbers have comparatively narrow tyres like maxing out at 120-130 mm but fz and gixxer or other bikes with mono shock absorber has wider tyres like starting from 140 or may be 130 mm. What is the reason?

Hello Brother, It seems that your point # 1 and 5 contradict each other. Yes, theoretically travel can't be same for both absorbers, but practically for bikes the load is always (99.9% of the times) perpendicular to the the axis and uniformly distributed. So the practical travel will be same minus some fractions of millimetre. Hence, this point looks practically invalid. 💯% agree with the cost part. Mono shock absorber in normal bikes is equivalent of cost cutting in disguise of better handling and act as a marketing gimmick. Majority of the riders can't even feel the difference between the two. Aside, full marks to the efforts. Keep it up!!! 👍👍👍

मेरे पास 2006 में unicorn बाइक थी। Monoshock सस्पेंशन से वजह से जब भी बाइक स्पीड ब्रेकर या खराब रास्ते पर जाती थी, मेरी पीठ में दर्द होती थी। फिर 2008 में उसे बेच दिया। उसके बाद 2012 में CBZ Xtreme बाइक खरीदी जो कि Twin Shock थी। हर रास्ते में एकदम मस्त चलती थी और सफर काफी आरामदायक होती हैं। अभी तक रखा हूं।

As I am using suzuki Gixxer , This bike is combination of mono suspension as well as duel suspension. I need to know life span of mono suspension in terms of kilometres or time period? So if you can share about their life & why this mono suspension is hard in feeling can it possible to make this soft action which gives you a soft feeling & another que when mono suspension caused leakage what to do ... Repair or replace .which would be good decision. For duel suspension why always left suspension causes leakage over oil seal ... Why left side one ?

Suspension power capacity vehicle me kis Tarah decide hota Hai . vehicle weight aur suspension ka kya relation hai. Meri two wheeler ka vajan 107 kg hai to us halat me suspension kit ne power aur pressure aur tension ka ho na chahiye. Aisa Koi approved chart hai kya aur kaha mile ga. Jaise air pressure count hota hai us Tarah suspension pressure count ho ta hai kya. Suspension capacity kis Tarah measure kiya jata hai aur decide kiya jata hai ?
