With an oscilloscope you should check the waveforms only. If they look all right, you should switch to a logic analyzer for this kind of job. Much much more powerful for cheap, as well as as being able to be programmed with multiple triggers, decoding serial/CAN/LIN messages, etc.
@MechanicMindset5 ай бұрын

@@MechanicMindset yes, it’s like a CANalyzer, although that one is limited to CAN (as the name implies). Probably the best, simplest and fastest to use logic analyzer you can get is Saleae. Excellent content on oscilloscopes. I really like the HS02 oscilloscope it has 12 bit capabilities and has 8000 samples per second and the software is so user friendly. It also works with Android tablets. This micro-oscilloscope comes in at $100. My favorite low cost.oscilliscope is the Analog Discovery 3 by Diligent. Its.a.small powerhouse at 125 MiSA per channel and 32000 samples per second at 14 bit resolution and the software called waveforms is the best software out there and competes with Pico Automotive. Works much better with hscope but still best used as a paper weight, I'm not trying to be funny in the least bit. Coupled with a hs502 or 512 , Hscope will do anything that Pico will do on 2 channels. You only get 2 voltage selections even with hscope powering it, 2.4 and 19v and even though hscope will record your pattern for hours and days, it can only record in pages mode with the 1008. Data is there, but not in real time . For reference, you get 1 defined secondary pattern each page. The native 502 and 512 will record hours on a fast signal and days on a slower one in real time. This is great to hear! Yes it should work ok. Just try to get something with a good amount of memory too. Sample rate isn’t very useful, if there isn’t enough memory to display those samples on the screen for the time base we select. Bandwidth isn’t so important for us. In fact, sometimes we want a lower bandwidth to reduce interference on the waveform. Hence why Automotive scope has low pass filters - that would be a good feature to have. And math channels 👍

If your not sure about V V T or cam chain tension when your getting 'drift' between cam position sensor and crank position sensor, shouldn't you check idle speed and oil pressure? I'm guessing they both use oil pressure to operate in conjunction with sensors? (opening or closing bypass valves or simple pressure relief?) Checking idle speed isn't too high is something that's been taught since well before electronic ignitions were used, (good old fashioned points and condensors) Mechanical advance mechanisms drop in and out from 'starting' position, your speculating about mechanical not electronic components.

another possible cause for the cam sensor... its a true VR sensor. voltage output will be proportional to RPM. and theyre hooked up to a schmitt trigger type thing. at low rpm it can take a small difference in velocity to make a large change on the slope of the curve the sensor itself produces, and exactly when it hits the threshold. i know that my VR sensor on a project wont trigger below approximately 400RPM. it simply doesnt make the power at that speed to reach the threshold voltage. the small variation in idle speed may be enough to account for it. wouldnt expect VVT to engage at idle... is that a reading directly at the sensor inputs? no. its after filtering and feeding through the ECU. how? is it direct path? wouldnt seem so... use this effect on small engines, file notches or a ramp in the leading edge of ignition pickup tab, gives a bit more retard at idle, yet acts like normal at high RPM... so you can adjust the sensor position to get a bit more advance at high rpm without affecting the low rpm.
@MechanicMindset7 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t expect VVT either, I’m wondering if it’s faulty. I’ll check the exhaust cam too and this will help confirm if it is indeed moving or ‘not’ Thanks 👍

My oscilloscope has a sample rate of 1 GSa/s,how bad is my oscilloscope?

you forgot to turn off channel 8 with the hantek.. 5:50 in the video

1 Msa/s how much MHz?
@MechanicMindset7 ай бұрын
They aren’t strictly related: Sample rate is relative data collection (1MS/sec, doesn’t mean it can collect 1000000 samples a second) MHz is about frequency; how quickly can the scope waveform change direction for fast switching signals

I bet the pulstime from the cranksensor is 45usec independent with rpm ? Try turning the crankshaft backwards and measure it again:)

You thinking it’s an active sensor? I saw these a while back at Audi, and they give a signal with the ignition on/engine off (this one doesn’t). However, im gonna try this for sure! 👍

I think it’s not active like an abs sensor but I think it’s bidirectional

I'm curious, you've already addressed the 1008c for resolution kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2Svi2iGlN91d68si=pKS7RxFxS67aJVrw so am I correct that this is not an issue for the 6022be? This is what I already have. I'm a shade tree guy, so I want to get as much use out of cheap stuff as possible. I'm not likely to be touching bmw at this stage, but if I want to do a timing chain they'd be high on my list.
@MechanicMindset6 ай бұрын
It will probably have similar results to the 2204A. I think the main point is, if you get a waveform like this, don’t assume the car is at fault. It could be scope specs. You may never see a sensor signal like this, but they are getting more common on later vehicles. Just one to be aware of 👍
@andrewlace6 ай бұрын
@@MechanicMindset no doubt as technology processes things are less likely to fail in one area but newer ideas transfer to another ie timing chains prone to stretching. Seems to be a modern feature of long service intervals, single row timing chains.

HSCOPE has a way running in a pages record mode with the 1008c. There is a gap between the pages but it definitely makes the 1008c a little better. As a scope enthusiast I own way too many scopes ( high end and low end ) I still am amazed at my hs502 and my hs402 wifi with an internal battery. I would pay 10 times the price , I just think HSCOPE really has more features then some of the high end scopes. Here is a link to the gadgets playlist demonstrating the new capture mode. Hopefully it okay to leave. Please delete if not. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKCamoJpZ8etiLc
