I just wanted to tell you that if it wasn't for this video I probably would of failed my mechanics of materials test I took. You explained 3D problems like no one else could. I finally understand the moments.

Actually ended up using this to study for my statics final. Nice video, helped a lot, and was concise with the info.

i just don't get this. i've watched lots of youtube videos and i still don't get this 3d internal moments..

A few things I like to remember: we are calculating the INTERNAL forces and moment AT THE CUT that will counteract all the other external forces and moments (so everything will sum to zero). And remember to “cut” it and throw away the other half completely. Only keep your half and see what forces and moments you need at the cut so that the sum of the forces and moments (of that half) will be zero. These internal force and moments don’t show up in your whole free body diagram, but only show up when you “cut” it. Now the difficulty of directions and signs is a whole nother issue that is hard to explain in text (and in videos). Best of luck!!

@@engineeringdeciphered I know this is an older video, but would the process be the same if you evaluated the side mounted to the wall (the part that you would "throw away" in this video example)? Since there are no forces or moments on that side of the cut does that mean the internal forces would be zero? Thanks!
