Brian's point of alpha ketoglutarate having mixed results supports Peter Fedichev's position that compounds that work for mice will have a small effect in humans and really only produce a benefit in older, sicker people, and not have a lasting effect.

But to get proof of concept in mice can still be pivotal to persuading scientists to be publicly bullish about the field, without the fear of repercussion. This will surely increase funding and public awareness in the field, despite the therapies not being very translational. But hey, sooner than later there will be supercomputers and AI that will be able to simulate the physiological environment in humans and we will hopefully reduce animal experiments. (So we can make clones of people we know in an alternate reality online and then test drugs on them. This way we can also do huge population studies and studies across genetic differences.)
