Same here. I was 16 in 1989 and I bugged my parents constantly to upgrade our computer so it could handle playing Mechwarrior. I played it at a friends house and was hooked, especially since we had been playing Battletech (and D&D) for a few years by then. They finally caved and we got a computer that could run it. The polygonal graphics were amazing at the time and the gameplay felt so good. Finally strapping into a Marauder or Atlas and just going full on Rambo on enemies felt great. Much simpler times in 1989 at 16, when my biggest issue was homework or what my friends and I were gonna do on the weekend.

I'm fortunate, I have one of those extremely high-end rigs with an i9 and 4090, and I've still had graphical stutters in MW5 Clans where I didn't have any in games like Hellblade 2. The engine is capable of stunning visuals and we're all going to have some gorgeous games to play in 3-5 years, but developers definitely need to consider the average hardware and not just the top end of what's available. The same number, different game is kinda MechWarrior tradition. They always had 2 entities with the same number, but different focuses and could be considered stand-alone games from each other. They'd usually use same engine and same assets, hence the same number (MW5 is a little different, but they still use same assets from previous engine). So, MechWarrior 4: Vengeance was a linear story-based campaign game, then followed with MW4: Mercenaries, where you jump from world to world and take on contracts for different factions (and the super fun arena!). MW3 was linear; MW3: Pirate's Moon had 2 story paths. MW5 did a switcharoo and started with the Mercenaries concept first before creating a linear campaign. Also, MW5: Clans sees you play from the opposite side as the campaign in MW3!

I've been playing the game for 6 hours now. I've some things to say about the game. It's MW5: Mercenaries with the tiniest bit of BattleTech added to it. You can freely swap between any of your Lance (Star in this game) and play them freely. You don't fail until your last Mech is downed, much the same as the update they did to MW5:M almost a year and a half ago or so. Your Mech list available to you is quite dismal compared to the 40-50+ total mechs available in MW5:M. In this game, off the top of my head, i think it's more like 16 or 20 or so total Mech chassis. However, there is hardpoint customization, to a minor degree. By that, i mean that your mech might have 3 ballistic and 2 missile slots to start with, but you can swap it in to something like a 6 total laser hardpoint, or 2 ballistic, 1 missile, 1 asc, etc etc options. It allows you to change your Mechs up in to various hardpoint configurations. There is not saved loadouts, that I'm aware of, so unless you have spare Mechs (which is NOT hard to come by, as there is no ammo and no repair bill post-mission, leaving you with an abundance of cash.) In addition, you have to play that Mech a few times to unlock those additional hardpoint configurations. The 'main character', Jayden, has atrocious pilot skills for you to upgrade. If you intend to use missiles, lasers or ballistics, you're far better off using one of the other pilots, who are actually dedicated to those tasks. In MW5:M, this was not an issue; your mc was a 60 stat behemoth in that game. In this, the lance captain is no better than anybody else, and is arguably WORSE because of the non-dedicated skills allocated to him that you can't even change. They did actually give stats you CAN altar on each pilot. They are homogenized though, and are bonuses like "stat increase while using Medium Mechs", and something like, "stat bonus while in a Gargoyle Mech." Those kinds of stats. But, i think they're permanent, so allocate what you are definitely going to use and nothing else. The game is easier so far imvho than MW5:M. You don't have the entire galaxy map available to you. At least, i don't. So you are not racing against time and balancing a check book. In addition, like i said, no payments for repairs nor ammo. I don't think you even pay a fee for destroyed limbs and lost/broken parts. It's THAT kind of easy. That said: you can still lose. Ordering your lance around is going to save you some pain, but you have 5 in total, not 4, so even THAT is easier than MW5:M. As far as I've seen so far, you do NOT have access to ANY Mechs from MW5:M. This might change, but i'm only at the second offensive, almost third, in the campaign. Honestly, I'm hoping it does change. There's also a lot of stat boost upgrades to get. A lotttt of them. Your Mechs are already superior too the Inner Sphere's Mechs, but after you get everything, your lightest Light Mech is probably going to be the equivalent of 1.4 Medium Mechs. Your Assault Mech, one single Assault, is going to be bringing firepower like it's 3 Annihilators packing LBX's.
@jeremypurdy18332 ай бұрын
Oh, in addition, the campaign for Clans picks up right after the latest dlc from MW5:M. There'll be several references at the beginning of the game that tell you this. Same universe, same story, just... You're the invader :P
@bumble35722 ай бұрын
It's pretty accurate to the lore (something to be celebrated these days) During the first waves of the Invasion the Clans only used 16 different OmniMechs in their front line units. The other Mechs (some OmniMechs, some BattleMechs, yes they are different under the hood) weren't really seen at all until after, with most being used in garrison roles, but also supplementing the depleted main forces. The biggest number of different BattleMechs has always been on the Inner Sphere side, the Clans use fewer, but heavily customisable OmniMechs. Hopefully we will get some of the other Clan Mechs added to the game soon, most have already been added into MechWarrior Online
@jeremypurdy18332 ай бұрын
Also, i just missed it before, you can save loadouts as custom ones.
@jeremypurdy18332 ай бұрын
Something else i learned: you can change each individual slot's hardpoints too. If you don't like your Mech's 2 laser hardpoint, see what other omnipods it has and just switch that slot only. Rinse/repeat for other slots. You can kitbash each of the omnipod loadouts four individual slots. Gives a lot of customization.

OK, so now that I've gotten a bit farther into the campaign, I can say I'm OK with how they designed the mech lab. I get it. The first thing I suggest people do after the first mission is unlock missile boat omnipods for every mech lol. I was able to unlock 4 out of the 5 after what I believe was the first mission. Then I unlocked the last one I wanted after the second mission. It was the ppc one. There's only one that comes with it I believe. I was having trouble with the second mission, kept losing a mech, so I loaded the autos Ave after the first mission and went into the mech bay and started configuring for missile boats. Missile boats are hyped for a reason. Every starter mech has a missile boat omnipod except 1 I believe, but thats OK because that one has a ppc omnipod. After switching omnipods and going with what I knew, I got through the mission without losing a mech or even a component on expert. Im also focusing on learning the controls and being more tactical and precise in my movements and strategy. God I love Mechwarrior lol.

Playing as someone from Smoke Jaguar sounds a bit odd, because if you played MechWarrior 3, you were involved in the downfall of Smoke Jaguar. I'm assuming this takes place somewhat later after the clan's reformation. Speaking of overheating, you could actually configure your mech in such a way where if you tried an Alpha Strike (fires ALL your weapons at once on the target) your mech would explode. I found it by accident, but it's absolutely possible in that game, which makes me wonder if it's possible in this too, lol.

I haven't played clans yet, but seeing the combat, it doesn't feel as punchy. Mercenaries' weapons feel powerful, and 4 mechs shooting the same target would rip the target apart. Heck it took multiple volleys to take down a helicopter, something that in mercenaries would go down in a burst of M lasers or an lrm 5 salvo.
