This is great! It makes me think of cars of old such as the original Batmobile, the Monkey's had their hot rod, and then there is the Munsters hot rods. There are many more but this car is certainly in a class of its own.

Wayne C is "so wrong" about the "misty green" being an unusual paint color for the " early 1950's". That color was available for every major car produced in that era. I have been collecting cars-trucks painted that "misty green" color and they are readily available.

Making a living doing this type of work can be difficult, you have to be very good and have clients that can afford to cover the cost of it all. It is very, very expensive to built a car like that.Finding clients with deep pockets is key.

Well I am compelled now to throw my two cent’s in! Their were a total of the top 5 MERCS that were given the treatment that became the best MERC’S ever done and I will say it now its my humble opinion! First and foremost the first MERC a 1949 was done by SAM BARRIS which was a success and that is what kicked off the MERCURY trend. The 1949 was the first new body style that changed from all previous styles from the earlier 1940’s styling. When the new style came out it had the perfect lines and SAM nailed it. But I have to say that the best MERC ever done and rated as the best and cleanest, smoothest chop ever done was by GIL AYALA’S body shop a 1949 owned by a fella MR. LOUIS BETTENCOURT back before 1952 later Louis went to the BARRIS KUSTOM SHOP to have finishing touch ups and detailing and paint. George started out with full fadeaway’s on the fenders came up with a new grill made up of multiple parts from different cars and other detailing custom work then finished it off with 25 Coates of Tingeia Maroon lacquer paint the car was rated as the best merc ever done and the last that I saw and know unfortunately was the car was sitting in some back lot rusting away and no idea where ,SAD the next merc wich was also chopped by GIL AYALA was a 1950 owned by BUDDY ALCORN AGAIN FLAWLESS it also after wards went to the BARRIS BROS. for a upgrade restyling, then their was the 1951 HIROHATA MERC,and then DON BUGARIN’S 1951 merc done also by the BARRIS BROS. THOSE ARE THE TOP 5 MERCS that were simply outstanding yes their were many others but those 5 were simply the best starting in order 1 LOUIS BENTTENCOURTS 49,2 BUDDY ALCORNS 50,3 BOB HIROHATA’S 51,4 DAVE BUGARINS 51,AND 5 SAM BARRIS’S 49 Now I know their will be some protest to my opinion but that just it my opinion. As far as the best MERC ever done was the LOIS BENTTENCOURT’S 1949 AND THAT IS FACTUAL as was posted in an article years ago. Where is that famous RADICAL MERC TODAY WHO KNOWS!!!!! THE OTHER 4 MERCS ARE ALIVE AND WELL BY PROUD owners OF THESE GREAT CARS AND THEY LIVE ON TO THIS PRESENT DAY.

I have to give it to him he has an eye for detail with shape of light and exhaust coming from the bumper just like the 56 and 57 mark 5 by ford. I agree with him on the cars today are made on computers. That is why cars in the old days were unique and amazing design way ahead of there time. Gorgeous . today cars are really boring

I will never understand why they display cars, particularly custom exotica like this one, with the hood up. Yes, it's nice to see the engine bay, but I would much rather have seen this beauty the way it was meant to be viewed, in all its splendor, as if rolling down the road.

LOL are you kidding me the front of that hood is in no way lead, and there’s no reason to think that it is. It was pounded out sheet metal and maybe it was leaded in areas. Those hoods are heavy in and of themselves with out a big chunk of lead going across the entire front of it.

IMHO, stylistically, a lot of the Barris cars were crap. "Change solely for the sake of change" I know hat's what guys wanted, and what it took to win shows. But very few...maybe a few out of every hundred...actually saw their lines improved by customizing. The Hirohata Merc was one of the exceptions. One of the most amazing things about this car is that as far as I know, the look was achieved without the use of a professional stylist. I.E., someone who knew what to change, and what to leave alone. I hope the sale will leave the McNeill family well-off for some time to come.

And you can't see a seam! Ha ha it's amusing how common quality becomes something special when a car like this is being explained by some fanboy. 7 inches off the back, 7! Not 6.8, 7! Without CAD! Parts off of other cars! The lines follow around the car! They used lead! What horseshit. This thing is a quirky piece of oddball culture that built on poor taste and lack of sense. The front end looks like the mouth of an old man with no teeth.
