MMW perfected the art of the groove. Un-freaking real. They go from jazz, to acid jazz, to space to the best groove you’ve ever heard in your life with ease. They can play anything. I’ve loved this band ever since I bought It’s a Jungle In Here as a teenager back in the early 90s. Long live MMW.

so gratifying to hear someone i grew up modeling my drum style after, billy, grunting the rhythm out loud. ultimate feels drummer of our time. now on a darker note. how do we convince the wood bros to go hiatus for long times so the trio can do they stuff again like old days? obviously i’m kidding, the trio is not a trio anymore for many hard made decisions by everyone involved. i wish nothing but the best to some of the absolute finest musicians i’ve ever been lucky enough to witness live many many times in many many venues all over this great land. oh and the grunting is around 34:50-35:00 just before the john comes in with keys. he’s really getting after it cuz he’s shaking something with his right hand, not using a drum sticking motion. such a dope way of incorporating some of his massive repertoire of percussion instruments. ( dried sea pods anyone, YES !!! 😂 )

The prominent use of different keyboards and the instrumental sections' variety and groove set this band way higher than the rest

If funk isn't as funky as this then there's no point to the funk. Medeski and Kinsey, greatest keys ever!

Without Billy Martin, one can hardly taxonomize it as "funk", so much as, merely, a funky lil' riff

Hofner bass Christ wood plays here and I for one am amazed at the PUNCH and clarity, no wonder McCartney used one early on in the Beatles. Way too cool~! Of course Wood plays the bass viol and hammer the hell out of it too. One thing is for sure these men LOVE THEIR JAZZ~!!!

If I could choose two groups out of any to see on NYE I would definitely say it'd be between MMW and Radiohead... both worlds different musically but they both resonate in my soul very similarly. Would give almost anything to see these guys live!!! Literally listen to them every day and every day I find a new favorite live show 🙏

This is amazing stuff. If you have yet to check out Matrix on Now He Sings Now He Sobs (and like the entire album Samba Yantra, Law of falling, Windows, Pannonica, etc.) By Chick Corea, you will not be disappointed when you do. D

Its a shame how many fans of modern jazz cant appreciate MMW. There's a certain almost punk-thing about them, an embrace of just a bit of what seems like naivity I suppose...too much of modern jazz really is too cool for school, MMW are really grounded in a different way than most jazz. On the flip side, a lot of fans of funk and jambands just cant quite keep up with the jazziness and avant-garde. Still, MMW have managed to have a plenty good career with many adoring fans.
