Unlike most of the rest of Oregon, because of the rain shadow effect resulting from the close range of the Cascades and Siskiyous, the Rogue Valley is relatively dry when compared to the coast and Portland. The region's climate is similar to the Central and Sacramento Valleys of California, with a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Winters are chilly and rainy, but relatively dry and slightly colder when compared to the rest of western Oregon, with frequent fog, and occasional snow. Summers are hot and sunny, but dry, with low or no humidity. Temperatures surpass 100°F (38°C), on an average of 10-15 days during the summer. Because of the combination of heat and dry air, wildfires are a problem during the summer, and occasionally, smoke will fill up the valley for weeks, reducing visibility. On average, the first frost occurs October 22, and the last on May 6.The Rogue Valley is in plant hardiness zones 7-9.[1] Sub-zero temperatures are extremely rare in the valley; the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport has not recorded such extreme cold weather since December 21, 1990, when the temperature dropped to −2°F (−21°C).[2]Due to the valley's generally mild climate, it is used as a region to grow pears, and there are multiple vineyards. Medford has, on average, 175 sunny days per year, compared to 80 on average for the Willamette Valley, and 65 on average for the coast.

+marxxmann The crime rate isn't any different than anywhere else in the state. You may hear people call Medford "Methford", but that's disingenuous as the drug rate is the same as anywhere else in the state. Unfortunately, Medford is pretty conservative, but there aren't a lot of "gun nuts" thankfully. Ashland, 15 miles south, is liberal as all hell, though. Medford is slightly right-leaning, but more moderate than anything. Hope that helps. I definitely would recommend moving here because, with all its flaws, it is a very beautiful city in western Oregon located right in the heart of the Rogue Valley.

+marxxmann Brookings is on the coast. If you want minimal rain, I would not reccomend anywhere on the coast. Research Grants Pass. They have more rain then Medford, but not as much as Portland, etc. Winters are still mild, and summers are hot.

+marxxmann Well, if you don't want a lot of rain, you could move east of the Cascades (eastern Oregon), but that also means winters are very cold, and there's lots of snow.

Well, Medford, Grants Pass, and Ashland are west of the Cascades, but in the rain shadow of the Rogue Valley, so they're much drier and sunnier than say Portland, but they're still west of the Cascades and aren't that cold, save for a few days in the winter of course. Temperature-wise, Medford and Vancouver are pretty much the same in the winter, but Medford, Grants Pass, Ashland, etc. just aren't as wet.

Medford will have the population of 100,000 people in the near future, since Oregon is one of the fastest growing states, besides Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. Medford is a sixth largest city in Oregon, behind Portland, Eugene, Gresham, Salem, and Bend.
