Dude for real. I try to wash the dishes at night, and got into the habit of watching videos/podcasts while doing them. At first it was tutorials, which was legit helpful cuz I didn't have time in the day to learn that info, but eventually it got to the point where I NEEDED a video to do the dishes. Every now and then recently I've just not put any media on during that time and it's way more relaxing. I haven't gotten to the point yet where it's an active conscious choice, right now the trigger is not being able to decide on what media to consume and after like 10 minutes of scrolling thinking, "well, maybe I just wanna give my mind a rest." Also feel-out-vipassana with the running water is super fun

For real! Every once in awhile I put on a podcast while I fold laundry or dishes as well. Sticky habit to break

I think when it comes to things like podcasts and the like can be attributed sometimes to loneliness. I tend to do this more at night when I am up because the wife and kid sleep early and I still need time after work to kind of decompress. But that time is filled with no interaction with them and lack of their presence, so I fill the void I guess, with human voices. Other times I find just the sound of nature, white noise anything to be helpful to drown out the "deafening silence". Just think, as a creature, that vacuum sealed silence in a house is a far cry from being outdoors. There's always a soundtrack in nature.

I actually do generally listen to podcasts, or watch video essays, etc. as my main focus, instead of as something to put on in the background :p I get your point though - I do agree that it's good to take the time every now and then to just sit back and relax, or to not simply have something playing for the sake of doing so.

Thats awesome haha. Yeah there are some podcasts and video essays that really require my full attention.

Audiobooks are my jam, man. I get to read while I'm doing chores, driving, walking the dog. My attention is fragmented, but I think the pros outweigh the cons.

This is so real man. Us having stuff in the background while we're trying to do something seems a little counter-intuitive, actually it just is. Having a nice song in the back while you're drawing or something is understandable but a whole 2 episodes of a show or a KZbin video makes no sense if you're trying to focus and have people talking in your ear. It especially makes no sense when you put on something that's already in what you're doing, like people who play video games with music in the background, the game most likely has music already lol.

This is a good video, and raised a point I don't think about much - I'll try to put on less media when doing creative stuff! I also want to know, whats your opinion on putting media in the background while playing games - For example, I had this on while I played tetris, but would it be the same as your point on animating?
@AriGrabb2 ай бұрын
Stoked to hear, thank you! If you really like playing games while putting things on in the background, dont let me get in the way of that- its your life. But since you asked, I would say video games are already very sensorial and stimulating. I love when a games mechanics get me immersed, and I cant flow if Im giving something else half of my attention. A healthy relationship to gaming is an interesting topic in and of itself, as I find many people- not all- use the medium not to be engaged but to distract themselves from their thoughts. Its a kind of numbing effect. But sometimes we need it

For your information, Mr. Grabbed Ari, I do have sexual interaction with a woman whilst listening to Coconut Mall in the background. In all seriousness though I understand what your point is, I'm an autistic person and I need something to occupy me since I have pretty bad adhd. it's a moving thing if that makes any sense. I see it as something to do while you're doing something else, and weirdly enough some people need it, such as myself. If you want to fix your attention span, sit down and read a book. If that's not doing it for you, go get a pet and focus on them. perhaps this is just nonsensical typing, but if we're just throwing stuff out there i'd like to voice my opinion on your opinion.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. Im deeply sympathetic to it. Sometimes I also find having this on helpful, but sometimes I also find splitting my attention creates more anxiety and less ability to focus on what I value. Everyones different and I dont want to impose my experience onto others.
@Blue_Punch_Buggy2242 ай бұрын
@@AriGrabb That's actually pretty valid. Everybody is different, if you feel anxious about multiple things happening around you whilst you focus then do what you must, I personally love listening to music whilst reading but I know lots of people who can't do that because it messes with their focus. Again, not wanting to push a specific agenda is nice of you, but it sucks that this needs to be clarified nowadays because anyone will jump on anyone regardless of opinion. Its just like how you mentioned the whole "having the world in your pocket" thing, times are changing and the world is catering.

i think something this video misses is that some people's brains just work better with multiple points of stimuli coming in. Say ADHD people whose brains are prone to wander even if they're doing something they enjoy and having that extra bit of stimulation can help keep them on task. Autistic folks as well have brains that are more suited to multitasking and as such have an easier time not splitting so much but sharing their attention between multiple things, which also helps them to focus because there's less to draw their attention away. I believe these things work doubly so for people with both. Though, i will agree that for the average person whose brain doesnt need that extra stimulation/can only really focus on one thing at a time they are most likely feeling the effects of oversaturation but are too distracted to really take any of it in so they get undersaturated in the end. modern times (and especially media) has put a huge emphasis as of late on not only pumping out as much as possible to keep your attention, but also on consuming that huge amount of mostly middling and underwhelming media. The new currency is Attention.

On the spectrum as well, and I dont think I've ever come across this point. Most people with autism tend to be very monotropic. You know your mind better than me, but I challenge anyone to consider if their gravitation to multiple sensory is really a natural condition, or a dysfunction caused by modern society.
@swollenapocrypha2 ай бұрын
@@AriGrabb most certainly, i think the place that media has found itself in our daily lives is unnatural and has its own negative effects even for people who do better with multiple stimuli at once, it's overwhelming to know you can have everything in the world at your fingertips immediately and having so many things that you aren't even looking for constantly trying to throw itself in your face. Even with my prior statements i entirely agree that this is a more than necessary dialogue for all people to have in today's world, both internally and externally.
