Fun Fact: The original screenplay, titled The Birth of Rodan, the monster is defeated with freeze bombs that immobilize him and he sinks to the bottom of the sea. Two more drafts were written by Takeo Murata and Takeshi Kimura. While the first draft was much closer to the finished film, the main difference is that there is only one Rodan and the monster feeding on livestock was to be more heavily emphasized. Rodan’s attack on Fukuoka is much less grand then in the finished film and after that, the flying monster is attacked by the US Air Force over Okinawa and badly wounded. When Rodan returns to Mt. Aso, Shigeru leads the efforts to dynamite the volcano to induce the eruption. When the team is laying explosives, an adult winged Meganulon appears and terrorizes them. It is then eaten by Rodan while the team flees the cavern. However, the detonation doesn’t induce the eruption as planned and only angers Rodan. Miraculously, the volcano erupts, consuming the wounded monster. Rodan’s mate was introduced in the second draft and from there, is mostly like the finished film.

That part about caring for the monsters may be what led Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan to start on the path of becoming the "Guardian Monsters" of later Showa movies, aka when I got into them, leading to the Godzilla cartoon. They went from tragic threats to the protectors of our planet against actual evil monsters, which was my childhood introduction and why I still prefer the idea of Guardian Godzilla over Destructive Godzilla.

What's really scary is how this movie portrays the Meganulons. In the movie, the Meganulons are dangerous, nearly impervious to bullets, and for the most part, are the main threat... only to be revealed they are just part of the Rodans' food chain. Also, not to step on anyone's toes, but... uh... I prefer the English dub as the second Rodan (either the male or female) is at least built up until the big attack scene in the second act and the movie states the two are always together which makes their shared demise all the more heartbreaking.

This film’s criticism of capitalism and mining and acknowledgment of climate change was ahead of its time.
