Very informative. It puzzels me that EVERYBODY else talks about, the necessity of ND filters and the 180 shutter-rule. Can’t you get as good as a motion blur in post (like Davinci Studio)? One would be more flexible and wouldn’t have the hassle with the NDs all the time. Hardly anybody talks about the negatives/restrictions of using an ND filter like, color-casting, vignetting, having to use a higher ISO sometimes, not being able to use polarizers with a variable ND filter which is usually less of a quality anyway, etc. If the motion blur is only done in post, without NDs, how good and easy is the result of a proper motion blur and quality?

Thanks... this is ancient. The 180° is the golden standard for natural motion blur.... that requires ND in bright scenarios. If you deviate... just know why, and what to do with it. Adding motion blur has technical limitations (just like any other post effects that renders new in-between frames) in some circumstances (light flicker etc), and is inconvenient, although it got very simple in recent years. NDs are the smaller problem in most circumstances, using quality NDs helps. If you have to use higher ISO you are using the wrong ND. If you want to use a polariser, don't use a vary ND. I don't recommend to use high shutter for exposure compensation).

Yes... Objects of different distances have different amounts of motion blur to the parallax effect.... with real and with digital motion blur. Both equally blur the given movement

Wow what a valuable information. Exactly what i needed. I use gopro which uses high shutter to control exposure. I was planning to use 60fps to avoid judder but was looking to add motion blur to solve that issue and your video helped me so much. But my computer is very weak at exporting.

hiya buddy.. useful video for sure.. may I ask if you have used RSMB plugin (reel smart motion blur from RE:vision FX) for Premiere Pro compared to the Time warp effect in After Effects? Im guessing the final result will be the same? Just RSMB probably a simpler workflow when editing a timeline with loads of clips in Premiere Pro.. + warp stabiliser is available in Premiere Pro..What are your thoughts? A new fantastic way to stabilise footage is with Topaz Video AI.. instead of cropping in to do stabilisation it keeps your footage as is then content aware fills say 10% all around he circumference of your footage and stabilises that way.. Ive used it many times and its incredible.. maybe you can do a video on it? I have a fully working PC version I could link to you via googledrive.. thanks Danny from London

I've been looking for this for a long time. I wonder if it works better with HFR footage? Thinking of people who shoot everything at 60fps, but have a normal speed timeline. Or, in the case of 'The Hobbit'/'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk' which had both HFR and 24fps theatrical releases, surely they used a similar technique to avoid strobing there?

Yes… high fps improves this technique a lot… and it would especially in stop motion techniques… basically a modern form of "go motion". I cant tell you if the rendered additional blur to the 24fps version… maybe, the shot with a shutter in the middle to begin with… you would hardly notice a difference. I thing that the 180° shutter is somewhat overrated.

@@MediaDivision I agree, Saving Pvt Ryan is still the textbook example of shutter angle as a film device! In the case of conforming 60fps to 30, would you need to change the timewarp speed to 200?

@@DollyRanch Timewarp lets you choose if you go by framerate or speed. In speed it works with speed %... so, a clip that is 60fps would be changed to 30fps with motionblur (if activated and set to manual) when you dial in 200%.

Going off on a tangent, modern 3D video games now add motion blur as an effect to help reduce the strobing effect and for me, it makes playing the game less nauseous and more pleasing to see.

These three videos were a great resource! Would you recommend a higher shutter speed when filming chroma key? It seems to me motion blur would cause problems. (If so, any recommendations, or is it case by case basis?) And of course now I know how to add motion blur after creating the composite!

Thanks man. Definitely a case by case thing. For action sequences with a good budget I would go double frame rate (halve the motion blur). Key, and then use normal framerate adding blur (generated with help of the higher framerate)

Hello! Is there someting comparable to "Time Warp" in Blackmagic's Fusion (or even Davinci Resolve)? I usually shoot BRAW and don't want to export my already colorgraded clips from Resolve just to get proper motion blur on my speedramps - any suggestions? In general I do all my editing, compositing, color grading and mixing in Resolve so that would be great!

Totally depends on what you are planning to do...... For a compact camera I would always use a vari ND. I have a 82mm Tiffen and that works great for me. For the higher end film, the large fixed filters for Matte Boxes are the deal.

Thanks for this great video! I've just subscribed to your channel. So for using slow motion with adequate motion blur (180°) with the GH5, I film with 50FPS and 1/100s shutter speed. The slow motion scenes (50% reduction) have enough motion blur and for the no slow motion scenes, I have to add motion blur in post.

Could you do a tutorial on noise reduction in Davinci Resolve? Most cinema cameras don't tend to go up to high and have very high noise when pushed. This usually wouldn't happen due to lighting but just getting the shot at all is extremely important in documentary work and while warp stabilization is simple to grasp, temporal vs spatial NR and Lum vs. chroma noise as well as if to do it before or after the creative grade has always confused me. Thanks for all the extreme quality you put into all of your work.

Thanks Alexander, well, I bet you can find a ton of basic tutorials about that already. We think it is pretty self explanatory... switch it on, and add play with the buttons until you reach the result you are looking for. Super boring episode. We almost never use NR our MAVO LF is pretty clean up to 10000 ISO. If we use NR, it is to clean up old film footage like we did for The Shining and Aliens, which are both very grainy

No… that is not in our ballpark. We moved to more sophisticated stuff. My tip to you. Don't bother to much with things like magic lantern… focus on what you film and how, lighting, movement. Cheating a couple of seconds of RAW out of a camera that is not built to purpose will not get you anywhere. If you are into narrative filmmaking, or what to start there, get a BMD Pocket 4K, some vintage lenses, and some simple light mobile lighting... you can make that look like a million dollars.

@@MediaDivision well its exactly what u can do with magic lantern, raw video 14 bit and is only 150€ instead the bmpcc 4k is around 700 Magic lantern allows u to do the same stuff u do with black magic at a lower price With the eos m u can do also 2.5k And with the 5d mark 3 u can shoot 4k 3k 3.5k raw 14 bit :)

@@GalstyanHayk My graphics card will not help you much as I am on a MacPro boosting dual AMD FirePro 700 driving 3x 4k (2x 60hz ad 1x 24hz) plus a Decklink card with an extra 60hz 4K output (SDI and HDMI 2.0) …………and my machine is 5 years old. By todays standards that should be no problem what so ever. A nvidia 1080 TI or the likes should be plenty of horse power but I am not a PC expert… there will most likely be a tutorial on KZbin

Amazing video, sir. I anticipate using this for filming green screen assets (because a clearer image is easier to key out compared to a blurry one). I wish there was a more mathematical approach though. Like if I shoot at 1/100 instead of 1/50, what is the correct (in terms of cinematic shutter angle) adjustment in the software, and so forth. I wish there was a formula.

I hate motion blur. I much rather prefer the strobing. So many movies look like a blurry mess to me. Why can't all action scenes look like those of Gladiator?

The motion is just not fluid. Gladiator wants to disorientate you to give you the feeling of being in the battle yourself. If you want fluid motion at 24… you need motion blur

Always always. Depends on what you are taking about… motion blur is done with Timewarp (onboard AE effect) The flicker fixer is "Flickerfree" from digital anarchy. No, we find adding grain to trivial… we use whatever suites the job but "Filmconvert" is the most convenient for our workflow. There is a lot about cinematic shooting/lighting in here, with a little tutorial towards the end (yes… cinematic looking footage is 90% lighting and 10% location) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3SzpKyVgbakj8U
