@@MediaDivision Haha! If I were KZbin, Netflix, BBC, or other big brands I would easily fund you to have your own series of "Optical Wonders" where you have all these insane builds and videos there. I hope you get enough cash to keep it going, this is a very expensive, yet so much needed field of documentaries.

I get it, it is way to niche... not even Netflix can afford to cater to 20.000 people. KZbin is the way, and I am very glad that our members and manufacturers like G.L makes this somewhat feasible. I just wish I could do it full time@@Bo_Hazem

@@MediaDivision You are an inspiration to many. I also started making documentaries about stuff I like and no money in return but very happy fulfilling my passion. Keep up the great work and I think GL gained more from this deal working with such a talented and dedicated production company. Maybe more short films in the future like that underwater one? This is not just a "KZbin video". This is a legit documentary about rehousing. The production on this one is unreal. Most of the so-called "premium" platforms don't have this kind of quality on their projects, and these guys give us FREE! This masterpiece deserves more than 5 million views instead of 50k, and this channel deserves 18 million instead of 180k. MediaDivision is the most underrated channel on KZbin. Thank you so much for your effort and dedication to your work. God bless you.

Cheers Dicky… very much appreciated! It is hard to put out this production value on a tiny budget… thanks to our members and sponsors it is possible at all. I am all for millions of views and subs… but then… our subject(s) are for a tiny group of people. I have no illusions about that, and neither does KZbin. If views would be a driving factor, I had to make videos about Botox. Thank for your kindness and for being on our journey with us.

" YOU BET YOUR ASS I WANT TO " Dude. I can't stop laughing. Seriously. Also -- you are THE king, for actually demystifying this subject. Nobody, and I mean, absolutely NOBODY has made anything about this. At least that I am aware of. Literally prepping a feature right now and couldn't believe my luck at seeing this uploaded. I've been trying to re-house a 17-35 Contax N for ages (I know that it's possible, not just because it's been done for Canon EF, but because a bud of mine who works at Panavision informed me the Panavision LWZ 17.4-34mm IS the Contax N). Also, I love how serene this one is, and thoughtful. Among your episodes, this one is one of your warmest on a human level ;) Oh and also getting a FULL K35 to FD SIDE BY SIDE IS SUCH A TREAT OMFG. Love the mythbusting, love the folks at GL, and love the insight into the process

Wow, I always wondered how rehousing is done. For the amount of work and materials it is actually quite cheap. I guess the look is virtually identical to the original K35 according to your previous video, even though you couldn't test it this time. Thanks for giving us insides. In what kind of production those lenses are intented to be used? The are to precious only to be stored on a shelf.
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 7 ай бұрын
I guess I will use them on all those productions that I consider worthy… and why would I produce something that is not worth my, or your time ;-) These are not suitable for run and gun though… so, expect me to use something else on BTS shootings. Look wise, they are next to identical. There was a certain someone I met (can't say who) and he used both a lot and had them side by side … he can't tell the difference, and if he can't…I guess nobody can!

Great video! Just want to point out that deposit payment for Whitepoint Optics rehousing is 25% and I've heard that TLS deposit payment is 10%. Cheers! - Lauri Suokas, Whitepoint Optics CTO
@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 7 ай бұрын
Thank you… for all mentions and to simplify the chart and it's meaning (there are different charges at different times for each rehouser), we explicitly mention what % has to be paid for production to START, not to get a place in the cue or point of refund-ability, or something like that. In the end, the customers are interested in how long they have to spare what liquidity. Our offer from Whitepoint looks as following regarding deposit payments: The payments are divided into four parts, below is an explanation of the payment structure: 25% of the total amount is paid as a deposit when you want to reserve your slots. This is non-refundable. 25% of the total amount is paid for ordering parts. 25% of the total amount is paid at the start of production. 25% of the total amount is paid upon delivery. Payments must be made 100% to start the delivery process. So, it is actually 75% by that measure. If this has changed in the last month we are sorry and happy for you to point it out here. We can have a correction sentence in the description. Did you actually change deposit policy since February? About the same story with TLS. Zero is a bit more complex (regarding refund-ability) but it just makes it confusing.

Awesome episode! My guess of the mystery lens is that element has been placed in contact with an organic material, which induced reaction with the coating, changing the color/roughness. I am not certain of what kind of reaction, but it likely requires oxygen/water in addition to the coating and the contact material, which explains why it is not present in the middle and around the edges. Also, did you just read the Cine Lens Manual?

I knew rehousing was a complex endeavor but this really helps me to appreciate just how much tech, labor, and expertise goes into it. Genuinely amazing documentary. And with everything that comes out of your guys' channel, like the wild "f0.3" spy-plane lens video, you've done an excellent job at truly capturing and distilling into video what feels like the kind of knowledge you're unlikely to find without having done-at the very least-some sort of apprenticeship in a very niche part of the industry. I don't know if it is simply natural talent, or whether anyone on the team has a background in education, instructional design, etc, but whomever is responsible for it has genuine skill; being an expert in a topic and the ability to explain said topic feel almost entirely orthogonal to me; I am primarily a software engineer, and I don't think I'm terrible at my trade, but it is often a struggle to figure out a solid way to boil any one issue down into something I can explain to a "layman", due to the nature of everything being built upon existing foundations of pre-requisite knowledge. It's the same concept that drives me nuts when I see things like the English teaching industry; I am *not* great at explaining English, and the only reason I have any ability to analyze the language comes from having learned Russian, a language with such wildly different grammar from what those of us speaking Germanic languages are familiar with, that it forced me to have some level of understanding, and yet despite all of that, simply by virtue of being a native speaker, I was getting better offers as a teenager than my professors with actual degrees in teaching ESL, with nearly perfect accents, vocabulary, cultural knowledge, etc. Anyway, ranting aside, thank you. It's a total shame this is buried under so many other videos, all of which focus exclusively on 3D-printed """""housings""""" that are more-so plastic facades for the oiginal housing; it is nearly impossible to find information about how you go about doing it properly. Currently I am a little too broke, but I definitely need to renew my paid subscription soon; this kind of thing not only deserves it, but the awful algorithm on here makes me worry about the economic feasibility of keeping up this level of long-form high-quality content through KZbin itself. Oh, and lastly, very cool that the G.L. Optics let you in to film and share their knowledge. I can't really imagine it outside of China; my experience in many other places has been that most companies are only willing to give away very surface level information, with video tours like this typically only really being, "hey, that's a cool machine", and good advertising.
@MediaDivision

Thank you so much Omar. We really appreciate your support and salut your generosity! We have no background in anything whatsoever… true story. Like in everything educational it really helps if you are truly interested and passionate about the subject… and willing to learn everything first. The rest is all about "as long as it has to be - as short as it can be" … or "boiling it down" as you called it. I truly believe that anyone can do it. This is of course a very very "special interest" subject and I totally get why modding and 3D printing is more popular. The finical aspects alone will limit the audience to this… still, we always tray to give value to those who are not the primary audience, like the lens evaluation part. The economic feasibility is a subject of course… I got small children to feat… this is why we are really thankful that there are people like you out there. Way to few unfortunately, which is why we have to do a lot of gear reviews we are not particularly interested in. It is always the underdogs that need to do something to put themselves on the map… I don't think that the great ones (Cook, Zeiss, etc) would reject something like this, but… they have little to gain being on top of the food chain, so, budgets will be accordingly low… if extend at all. Thanks again man… all the best

my best guess on the "halo" defect is that it's some kind of thermal stress defect, like if the element was left in a hot space, or possibly heat-cycling space (inside a housing which did not expand the same as the glass) for years. It's a strange one, for sure.

@MediaDivision
@MediaDivision 7 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot… I was hoping to convey the complex "why"… but in one sentence: "because the high end customers demands it this way"… and of course, it is very different to putting big wheels on a Lamborghini. Some aspects of the size have to do with technical necessities, but most have to do with standardisation that is expected on such productions. The original housing is next to unusable in those contexts - hence, the modification.

This is probably the most interesting video about lenses I've ever watched on YT, by far... And I mean, I watch a lot 😇 One thing espacially sparked my interest: do you know which wide angle adapter they use for the Canon FD 50mm 1.2 L to make it a 35mm 1.2? Would be so interesting!! 🤪

@@MediaDivision Very true. My complaint is more on the lack of effort. Sorta like the sell me this pen concept. Some get it, most don't even see where the market is going. Ex. This lens is cool, you should buy it. vs You're like, here's a story of this cool lens set, let's see what's inside it, and put it inside this other housing, you should buy it....for several times more 😅 and btw there's no autofocus, switches, etc. You guys display what you're good at which answers the question of, should I hire this person, this studio for work?

Great video and good sense of humour. I purchased a set of GL Optics Leica R primes 6 years ago. There was a back focus issue with the 28mm, 35mm and 50mm on delivery. GL Optics replaced all 3 lenses for free without question. I ended up buying their Canon 70-200mm, Angenieux 45-90mm and Tokina 100mm macro. I’m still using everything 6 years later. Definitely recommended for premium rehousing.

G.L. Optics is a very nice company with real craftsmanship. What I missed in this story (and am very curious about) is how the original lens parts design and grouping fysics is exactly measured and translated in engineering the re-housing tubes. I’m very interested to know! Ciao!

My pick would be both the Nikon's and Canon's from the 1970's - 80's. Both 50 or 55mm f1.2, 105mm f1.8, and 35mm f1.4. It is a kind and gracious deed for G&L to allow you to film their work. It is not often one sees fine craftsmanship on display.

That is exactly why we thought it would be a great idea and where very happy that G.L was so open about it. I don't know the processes of others as I haven't visited their facilities.
