Athenian Rhapsody Review - EarthBound And WarioWare Collide!

I had an interest when I first saw this because I do like the RPGs that have some quirky twists to them, like the aforementioned Earthbound. I know we've had a few that have tried to capture that same vibe but didn't hit the mark, so it's nice that this one is fun and does have that sort of charm as well. I think I'll have to pick it up sooner rather than later. Thanks for the review.

I think I'm still going to have to play the demo to get a feel for it, but 8-10 hours seems like a good length for something like this, especially if it's going to throw multiple paths/endings at you.

My daughter and I have a strong connection to Toby Fox games, and always want to find something to build on that…. Sure that’s not entirely possible, from the game to the emotional impacts we went through at the time. But still, we may have to check this out. Many, many thanks for the review.

When I initially saw the release date trailer, I was in laughing fits! Which to me is a good sign! Honestly, I adore this game! It's not for everyone but for the right person, it ticks all the boxes! The graphics are appealing, the music is ear candy, and I love the story as silly as it is! James also is one of the sweetest characters, oh my goodness! I actually ran into two bugs on my playthrough. First was crash via getting hit by avalanche. I actually laughed at that! The second was a bug I heard about and was suspecting. My first run was a pacifist run. And for some reason at the end, my Rhapsody says I killed fifty people! Now the ending itself was correct, the Rhapsody was wrongly recorded in that one area is all. I also read as you level up, the enemies power up too. I don't know how true this is though! Also even the creator admits to using Chill Mode if you are stuck and says he uses it himself sometimes. I won't deny to using it myself. All and all, the game is perfect for me! Sure there are some hiccups that need ironing out even on Switch, but I will not let these issues get in the way of my fun! One thing concerns me though. Why is the 'kill everything' route called Lullaby?

Just tried the demo for this on Switch, and it's honestly very interesting! Unlike Undertale, I like that there isn't some pretentious moral dilemma of whether or not you should kill the things trying to kill you and reap your soul and the game making you feel bad for defending yourself afterwards. It's just pure silliness in a world with absolutely no context. Befriend the denizens or vanquish them in combat. The world is your oyster. I like the concept and I can easily remove it from Undertale.

I agree. It's self defense at that point! I like how your save file mentions it before the Richard fight.

Undertale don't do judge you If you killed only for your self defense will judge you if you kill everybody on every location of the game. For you get the no mercy ending you have to wan't kill everyone not just defend yourself

@@mattthegoat606No it judges you. Through Sans in particular. You even get told that EXP is short for execution points and Love is short for Level of Violence. Sans gets particularly bitter if you killed Papyrus and Toriel. Basically, it does still judge you, giving you flak for if you did kill and twisting the knife on certain ones. To be fair, Athenian Rhapsody judges you... But also backwards in the process. If you go completely pacifist, you are not told that it was bad, just that the one giving you the final judgement didn't think some deserved it because they hurt you. Also, unlike Undertale, it more or less encourages you to come up with your own conclusion, considering early in the story, we meet someone who would rather befriend and someone who is gathering EXP with his own reasons. To be fair, you do get judged more harshly if you take the No Mercy/Genocide route in Undertale. But you still get judged even without that. Undertale even promoted pacifism even in trailers, calling it the friendly RPG where no one has to die. Athenian Rhapsody though was all like, befriend, kill, or a little of both? It doesn't matter as there is no wrong way to play!

@@peachymiku6432 undertale don't have a wrong way to play, if you do pacifist you're played right, If you do neutral played right, If you played No mercy(best route) you played right. But i understand what you're saying and this New game athenian Rhaosody is fire!!!

I dunno. Something about his game is giving me a bad vibe. It's giving me the impression that it just wants to be a 10 hour joke museum. Like a walking simulator, but with the occasional easy puzzle and easy battle. My wishlist is pretty full already, so I think I'll pass.

@@triple-d2640 YEAH! That's a good point too. I'm not the best at specifically noticing stuff like an FOV problem. Like, I could tell something felt off, but not what specifically needed to be done about it, so I appreciate you helping me put some of my conerns into words for me.

Really? The main character is a kid with a baseball hat and bat and the battles are like undertale? I mean it's one thing to be inspired by games but it's another thing to outright copy them. This game looks like it leans a little too much into the latter zone. I personally love Earthbound but I hated undertale, so I don't know how I'd feel about this game.
