It's 2020, and I just bought one of these to expand UNRAID. Through updates, these now support up to 16TB drives.
@renegade6373 жыл бұрын
If it's an REV. 03 version, yes. I bought mine back in 2014 or 2015 when they were rated for a lower capacity. Then, when the product page updated, I contacted Mediasonic and they verified which version of the hardware was future ready. So, owning 2 8-bays and 1 4-bay ProBox, I am, theoretically, future proofed up to 320TB (20 x 16TB). On that note, keep an eye on the product page and see if it gets updated for higher capacities.

Yes, the Mediasonic has port multiplier capabilities. I was referring to motherboards the have built in eSATA on the back panel. Intel motherboards do not support eSATA connections. But, third party manufacturer like Asus, Gigabyte, and others that have additional eSATA connections typically use JMicron controllers. JMicron usually supports port multiplier.

Love the fact that it supports RAID 50 and 3TB HDDs! Want one!

wow just googled this from a 4chan thread about the item, and LTT 12 years ago. 12 years is not that long and he has come so far.
@equallywrong12 жыл бұрын
The built-in eSATA on most Intel-branded motherboards do not support port multiplier. Many of the third-party motherboards (i.e. Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) that use JMicron or some other controller may support port multiplier. 8 out 10 times your going to require a eSATA pci-express card to get port multiplier capabilities.

24TB? Was 3TB the biggest size back then? I've lost track, I only know I stopped buying 3TB some time ago, only buying 8/10TB the last 3 years. This box does work really well. No issues for me.

Guys, if you're planning buy and use this box as RAID-5 with 1 single large volume, this box is not for you. You only can configure RAID-5 with 4 drives max, so if you insert 8 drives and configure it with RAID-5, you will ended up with 2x RAID-5 volumes. The USB-3 performance from this box also slower than my other single USB-3 stand-alone. I did not try eSATA yet and I already stopped using this junk raid box. It's supported up to 8x 6TB drives, maximum capacity per volume is 24TB if you configured it as RAID-0.
@jmac_au43448 жыл бұрын
huh? How is the enclosure limiting you to 4 drives?
@dvu07048 жыл бұрын
The enclosure come with 2x backplane, each connect to 4 drives, that's the limitation, you can't do 1 big raid-5 with 8 drives, if you want to configure it with raid-5, then you would ended up with 2x raid-5. For more info, you would need to call them, they don't public the details about their product online or you can visit their forum her forum.mediasonic.ca/, do your owned research before buy it.

multiplier... you can only see it as one drive right?
i don't really see the point of a lock when the things is so small and easy to pick up... if someone wanted to steal any of your hard drives they could just unplug the thing pick it up and walk off with it and as for opening it it couldn't be that hard to crack open
